Who are/were they for?
They can only tow 1,000 lbs, 2,000 if you're lucky. They still handle like shit (despite how people modify them with fender flares and lowered suspension), so they're just as bad to drive as a full size truck. Midsize American sedans at the time were way comfier as cars, could seat six people, and could tow 5,000 lbs.
There's a reason these went away, and it isn't the taxes.

Most people aren't using their trucks as work haulers, so utility isn't all that important.
That being said, it was always most fun to toss my bike in the bed than it was to take the wheel off and put it in my car. If I saw something neat on the road or scrap, I could grab it without worrying about my headliner.
I'm not a pussy so I'm not intto the fearmongering bigger car arms race, nor am I afriad my dick will fall off if I drive a reasonably sized truck.
    Shame you are

Neither am I. It's just that for the same price nowadays you can get a full size which can do even more.
    >nor am I afriad my dick will fall off if I drive a reasonably sized truck
I'm not either. That's why I think full size trucks make more sense for most people looking at trucks.

That WILL cost more in fuel expenses for capabilities that you will NEVER use.

They're perfect for hauling leaves to the dump and back. That's about it though.

Other import trucks exist other than expensive meme Toyotas.

                Isuzu pup
                Mazda B2000
                Nissan truck

Chevy S-10s are Toyota rare now
                Ford rangers are still around
                Mitsubishi Dodge D50

    >open box for hauling large/awkward/dirty shit that won't fit in or you otherwise don't want to put in a car
    It's not that complicated.
    >just tow a trailer
Why buy, register, maintain, store, hook up, haul, and later detach an entire separate vehicle when you can just load up the box of a pickup?

the only correct truck to own is either a mini or a bigass heavy duty, most of the stuff in between is just a jack of all trades.

Goddam old Nissan utes are cool. Mazdas as well, rotary swapping an old B series would be a fun project some day.

or you could try to find one that came with a rotary, which meant you got factory flared fenders

Oh man, that's hot. Looks like they were North America only, I've never heard of a factory rotary ute here. Mind you most of them in Australia were badged as Ford Couriers.

74-77 Mazda REPU (Rotary Engine Pick Up)
It's the same as the B Series and Ford Courier from the time, but only Mazdas could be had with the rotary. Quite rare and expensive nowadays. Cheaper to just swap a non-rotary one.

Why doesn't Toyota change this to a truck and sell it?
I have driven 62,000miles in Japan for five years with no problems except for replacing consumable parts.

    850000km,528000miles

Normally I often see around 180000miles.
Even after repeated stops and starts on narrow roads in Japan, the car continues to run at this level with ease.

We get it you want to be a childish retard and not face criticism.
Unfortunately your not 12 anymore and your toys are on the road and not the sand box.
When it was just a few trugg drivers you could be accommodated, but there’s so many of you now your a menace that needs culled by a sliding tax scale according to displacement.

They aren't for towing massive loads. They are for getting what fits in the tray in the tray. Also they were really economical compared to larger utes.
There's a really they were massively popular in japan, south east asia and aus/nz.
