    >art is fricking godawful and the author is just tracing the cars and using google map screenshots for backgrounds

I have read like half of it. It sucks. Rules make literally no sense and there are only 3 or 4 of them. Initial d was much better

this. We liked Initial D because it is based on true stories. It also helped that drift legend Keiichi Tsuchiya helped with editorial so the factual racing techniques are what race car drivers actually faced on the track and how it pertained to real-life illegal street racing. It was a shining example of a period-correct anime piece which can never be made again because it reflected deeply what the 90's Japan culture was. Even the cars featured were enthusiast cars of the time. It made sense to us because even the character-building was personable and realistic and pertained to car geeks like us.

However, MF Ghost. The author totally misunderstood what made his Initial D so popular and thought it was just all about the cars. He made a fantasy piece that was so incoherent, its almost laughable. He could have written a more modern Initial D and incorporated professional drivers and other writers to help him like before but he didn't. It makes for a stale "sequel."

This. It has so much wasted potential too. I'm not even against the idea of racing the gt86 but immediately throwing it against exotics etc is just dumb. Also, no american cars? That's an entire anime arc right there just gone. A legitimately good plot against the nimble 86 vs dodge muscle boats that could actually be believable that an 86 could eek out a victory in the corners. Hell even throw in a 4cyl camero to race against. Or what about racing just regular modern cars like a gti, a wrx, a last gen evo, stuff where it would be believable that he could win with luck, and then he mods his car to race M3 comps and 911s and stuff. From what I understand it's just more plot armor he's unbeatable bs

The problem with Initial D incorporating modern cars isn't their power- its their balance. Drifting scene and the 'touge' are primarily the battle grounds for Japanese machines primarily. Now, we do have Wangan Midnight and that is a perfect example of what good writing can do to incorporate foreign (to Japanese mainland) machines and their capabilities. Best Motoring/Hot Version have shown what foreign cars can do in the touge but they are mostly there for time attack/grip racing. You don't see much of the flashy moves the Japanese tuning cars can do.

Video for example- Hellcat is so robustly American that it is difficult to balance if driven like a time-attack machine at the circuit:

street racing a gr/gt86 in the 2020s in the way Ghost does it is stupid because the sheer amount of cars that exist which come with double the power stock whilst not actually handling that poorly.

You could make a case for the AE86 because of the narrow mountain passes coupled with basically nothing in Japan having more than 300ish horsepower stock, and those that had more than 200 were turbo'd meaning it's not the same as 300hp N/A because of turbo lag.

But nowadays think of trying to put the 86 against a new Z or Supra (if we're staying with JDM cars only), the 86 will never go above 250 without a turbo kit, meanwhile the new Z and new Supra are hitting 500 with just 1-2 cheap parts and a boost tune. Or if you wanna go older cars, a 370z with full bolt ons and a tune will do 400+ HP N/A at only 300 pounds heavier.

MF Ghost would have made a lot more sense / been better if the main character's car was a hand-me-down 350z or WRX or something, at least it has some level of potential with power gains.

What if 'mf ghost' was just about young kids trying to get into cars but realizing that it's not the 90s anymore and it's nearly impossible to get into cars. So they all save up money and split the costs on buying an ae86 trueno because of DK and its a total junker that's slow as shit and barely runs after dumping tons of money and they can't even pass Japanese inspection. The manga is about mourning the sunsetting of automobile enthusiasm in a turbulent changing world. They end up engaging with karting and later on buying a used 370z and trying to race on mountain passes but most of the passes all have guard rails and speed bumps and they also end up getting caught by police most of the time anyway. It ends with a final complete restoration back to stock of the Trueno and literally driving into the sunset

The ending moral would be about appreciating what we had/have and symbolize the transition of car enthusiasm going from a performance race inspired outlook to a more preservative one. The characters all aging and maturing a bit throughout it

But there has to be a middle of the story wangan racing arc where they come upon a twin turbo testarossa and buy it for pennies, modify it for around $300 to hit 350kmh and the two friends driving it die in a fiery crash so the other friends never return to the wangan

Ever watched other period-correct anime related to cars? Something like 'Shakotan Boogie' or 'Young GTO?' There's so much wasted potential in side-stories. Shigeno could have made a modern Initial D like:

      >episode about a 'deliquent' car gang going around their city targeting car collectors and other enthusiasts and stealing their car parts/cars
      >episode about 'youth Yakuza' ('Hangure') gangs with loads of wealth, buying foreign exotics like AMG Mercedes or new BMWs and causing chaos in local and traditional car racing spots around the country, evading and bribing police
      >an episode about an older legendary mechanic that knows all the secrets about suspension dynamics and alignment and used to soup-up the old drift cars of his area but is now just working a normal low-key job like Bunta
      >an episode about a money-scheme involving the infamous 'Midnight Club' and how they have ventured past the freeways and into the mountain-passes, betting big sums of cash on who will win local gang races
      >maybe an episode about a love interest and how she was actually 'for the streets' and was hopping in and out of different guy's cars and messing with their psyche causing accidents/suicide

There's so much possibility but his writing just isn't there- Shigeno is far disconnected from his audience. So much waste when he has Initial D as his resume.

To be fair he's just too old and I don't think he really cares about more deeper looks into car culture. You could tell that even with the later initial d stages

MF ghost is the laziest shit ever. even the author doesn't give a frick about it. nothing happens. just a bunch of black and white stock images with some speach bubbles depictiing empty dialogue for a couple pages each chapter. from time to time Shigeno will throw in a scribble of some characters.

imagine working only 3-4 hours a week and making a profit because your previous passion project from 30 years ago got really popular.

          >Project D takes place in 1996-1997

          >during Project D they race against a 350Z, S15 Silvia, Toyota Altezza RS200, AP1 S2000, and an R34 GT-R, all of which were made after 1997
