What was it like?
Arms, armor, cavalry, how did they muster armies? What formations did they use?
Medieval African warfare

It didn't exist.
To get meaningful conflicts in Africa, without Rome, you would look to at least 17th century and those were just foreign proxies.
Even Europe had a lot of hunter gatherers in the Middle Ages and africa didn't have a lot of sedentary population until they started deforesting and growing population (the "medicine caused growth" crap is fake).
>what is west africa
Ligma
For the Hausa kingdoms, read the article "Arms and armour in the warfare of pre-colonial Hausaland." It goes over arms and armor (obviously), but it also talks about seasonal warfare, cavalry, the role of religious leaders, and organization of the armies.
Dummy.
>It didn't exist.
how does warfare just not exist. this board is so retarded nowadays
pretty cool stuff
>Even Europe had a lot of hunter gatherers in the Middle Ages and africa didn't have a lot of sedentary population
Completely wrong, retard.
Yeah read that book not very good it’s rooted in outdated sources and bizarre assumptions also they did make local mail armor and steel curiasses the idea that they just imported everything comes from old European assumptions rather than actual evidence
bantus just set fires on everything and then ate whatever wasn't too burnt
I love it when people talk about Africa like it's a country and about the medieval period like it's a decade
Different modes of warfare were practiced across the continent, from armored cavalry charges to shooting poison arrows from war canoes. It really depends on where we're talking about.
No, you don't understand. Things are things because they are. I don't need context for why things are things or even need to do anything beyond name something to ask about. Maybe you'll enjoy my next thread about "hey LULZ what was it like for a peasant in the medieval times??" I will not elaborate what I mean by that or go even narrow anything down. I will, of course, get people who know about history from youtube channels and video games. This makes them experts, and I may freely quote them in order to seem learned without any additional information.
When I see questions like this I really wonder how overtly people can make this about the obvious racism they're trying to bait. We all know there will be posters saying, without anything to truly back it up beyond what they think are technology trees in a video game measuring advancements, WELL AFRICANS ARE JUST STUPID. That's all these threads truly are. They want confirmation for their racist retardation.
They put on their loincloths and chucked spears at each other.
North Africa was closely connected to other meditteranian civilizations, africa is not one whole
>Medieval African warfare
i'll answer it if you tell me what asian medieval warfare was like
I know this is a troll thread but I’m bored.
Sahelian armies were dominated by freeborn noble cavalrymen known as Mandekalu in Manden. They wore chainmail armor, gambesons, iron helmets, and wielded swords alongside shields.
The bulk of armies were composed of archers drawn from the Jon servile caste. Those attached to Mandekalu were called Sofas. Archers made extensive use of poisoned arrows.
The basis of most sahelian armies in ancient times were the hunter fraternities who even to this day defend their people from Islamic fanatics like ISIS and Al-Qaeda.
The Donso hunters existed outside of the caste system and anyone could join them if they were brave, chaste, and pure of heart.
Most major cities constructed high walls to keep out invaders. Kano’s walls for instance stood around 50 feet or so high.
Warfare was considered a gentlemanly affair wherein only freemen were authorized to duel each other on the battlefield. However they could hack down as many infantry as they felt like from horseback.
>chainmail
>medieval africa
lol
Fuck off OP. Everyone knows it’s you.
Oof
Why didn’t they cast Idris in a Witcher show.
