media server

alright, i've been trying to use VLC via SMB and all I get is constant stuttering. Looks like it's to look into an actual media server. what is the best option out there?

If the latency is not extremely low, try increasing the input buffer to say 10 seconds.

    There's a setting the somewhere

If you're trying to play some Uber hd 3d hdr whatnot on a potato, it should be kind of obvious

I can use VLC on a firestick to playback 4K over SMB from a fucking USB stick on a Raspberry Pi 2 no problem, sounds like a network problem

You probably have a 4k firestick. As

pointed out I might have an old potato unit.

plex literally goes through their own server before reaching you. that's why the connection is always so shit.

i don't know why they do this. probably trying to amass data for marketing bullshit.

Get Kodi as well, I have some gripes about it, but Jellyfin is pretty shit as anything other than a backend.

I just finished setting up jellyfin and it took all of 10 minutes. The video is running smooth as butter. Forever done with vlc.

jellyfin is 1000x better and less israeli than plex. read their privacy policy

jellyfin android tv and web clients are both pretty polished. although you want
          >libre or rooted TV box with 10bit hardware decoding
          >server and TV box both connected to router via ethernet
          >kodi + jellyfin for kodi on TV box
          >sonarr + radarr + jackett stack set up to copy to jellyfin library directories on completion

Can I use jellyfin the same as plex (local network, hosting from pc to tv) without connecting to the internet?

that sounds like codec problem. most of my shit encoded in h265 which plays horribly on older tv sticks where you can mitigate it by forcing vlc to play them at 480p
but more modern sticks had no issue with it. you really shouldnt be stressing your server with encoding or "transcoding" as retards call it. and if your clients too shitty to playback "modern codecs"... make them re encode it instead and cope
i played 1080p streams in h265 up to 5 simultaneous clients around the house, including all phones and tv sticks plus 2 linux machines with sshfs on top of smb and it was fine
