Read what makes you passionate and turns you on. Don’t take advice from resentful crab-in-a-bucket-type people on this forum who can’t imagine anyone getting any worthwhile enjoyment, stimulation, or deeper impact from unusual fields of study, or the dry brain-in-a-jar academics who will dismiss it all as “beneath serious consideration and study”. You can occasionally take into account their viewpoints, sure, when sometimes they have a point and are validly criticizing an emperor-with-no-clothes who suckers people into their hodgepodge half-Orientalist half-occultist mishmash of rambling and shoddy scholarship, but sometimes you can extract nuggets of gold even from the unlikeliest sources, or imperfect sources.
Fundamentalist religionists (like Christians, predominantly, in the Anglophone Western world I assume we’re largely in since we’re all speaking English) will have you toss out all other cultures, religions, mystical teachings and occult schools as “distractions from the one truth”, and of course even condemn them as demonic, in a sort of cosmic egomania that views their culture as solely and uniquely RIGHT. Cynical, soulless, and faithless scientific materialists will also have you push stuff like this away. A whole treasure trove of fascinating lore that could at least widen your intellectual, aesthetic, philosophical and spiritual horizons (even if you ultimately choose to disagree with these ideas or not follow such schools), all just ignored.
I personally loved his “The Secret Teachings of All Ages” (the full title including the subtitles: “An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy; Being an Interpretation of the Secret Teachings concealed within the Rituals, Allegories, and Mysteries of all Ages”, to give more of an idea of what’s in it). Some of the scholarship is now known to be outdated, particularly on Islam I believe (M.P. Hall does get into Islam in home chapter and respects the Sufi and dervish schools of mysticism, seeing them as another bearer of the great perennial spiritual truth and the true heart of Islam).
One does eventually see why what’s been variously called esotericism, occultism, initiations or secret societies have been formed. Ironically, the very outraged, skeptical, cynical reactions you get to the very idea of esotericism by some of the public, is one of the reasons of why this must sometimes be so. People condemn and attack what they can’t immediately understand, what upsets their scientific-materialist-rationalist or fundamentalist-religious prejudices, and suggests that there is such a thing as a higher, more transcendental state of being to attain through various paths that have been offered to humanity throughout history.
Thanks anon. Just gonna post the rest of the table of contents then give it a rest for now. Again, like I said, the PDF of that wonderful book (The Secret Teachings of All Ages) can also easily be found with a Google search.

If all religions are the same then why should I go to church pray or be moral? If Christ is just a philosophical story we are no better off than in nihilism
Because practicing the virtues and praying bring you closer to God.

The RCC's documented atrocities are infinitely greater than Freemason boogeyman stories. I wouldn't even be surprised if they are one and the same in the upper echelons of the Vatican.
What RCC documented atrocities? The history of the Church is spotless as Vatican I proclaims. Freemasons caused the French Revolution, brought about the secular state.

Because them all being the same doesn't make them less true. Its not just philosophy in the form of some story, it is philosophical praxis on how to best be a part of the universe. This statement you are making seems like the only value you see in religious philosophy is being on a winning team above others. Your head must be a dismal place.

new age stuff (not necessarily even speaking manly hall here) are all about equating traditions and trying to create a tangible backdrop of esoterics (which is why you see many westerners pick up eastern traditions and mix it with new age bullshit); the historical reality blows up a lot of the early 20th century presumptions (such as exposing the true historicity of the tarot) as well as showing what the west inherited is largely their own spin offs from near east traditions from the sumerians.
this pisses off a lot of people because I find that a lot of anti christians "hate abrahamists", but end up espousing traditions that still draw from semitic or semitic-adjacent sources (abraham was born in Ur, for instance)

>you're looking back for "the first humans" and believing they held a monopoly on all things,
it's the earliest religion we know of, predates greek religion about a thousand or so years, and it's quite obvious they inherited the polytheistic belief systems. it doesn't take a genius to think "hmm...aphrodite is an awful lot like ishtar in gilgamesh..."
>but what about other global cultures
we're all essentially the same humans, and there's a number of similar ways to interpret esoteric experiences (like getting hopped up on goof balls and thinking you were a rabbit in a past life)

>it doesn't take a genius to think "hmm...aphrodite is an awful lot like ishtar in gilgamesh..."
exactly, it's surface level pattern recognition, it doesn't takea genius to notice thaaaat.
But this didn't occur in their minds; they reached the same imagery or close to it from different points in time, from different continents where no possible interaction or "pass along" could have taken place.
There's a massive thing going on in universal polytheism that we haven't recognized at all; and we couldn't really have even recognized this until finding the New World civilizations.
ha sorry slightly off topic, but yeah I don't like the mysticism stuff either.
Are you retarded? If all religions are the same it follows that all religious stories are non-literal, just reflections of some philosophical reality. However if that is true then there is no need for religion whatsoever. This philosophical reality which is supposedly at heart of all religions should be our focus. We should seek to explicate and study this reality, instead of shrouding it in religious myth, art, and theology. Religion therefore becomes unnecessary, even an impediment standing in the way of the full appreciation of this pure philosophical truth.
So what starts as an attempt to be super-intelligent and avoid cultural chauvinism (“I’m not like those dumb Christians who say their culture’s religion is the only truth, and yet I’m not an atheist!”) ends in the same secularism that you wished to avoid. You abstract God to the point he is a philosophical principle, a kind of mathematical theorem, and not a real personal reality in Jesus Christ, whom you can pray to and love. This seems “high IQ” to you because it’s not like those dumb fundamentalist Christians, but it’s just atheism at the end of the day.

Hall basically states in his book that things like myths, personifications of deity and things like that help the exoteric part of the population - the largest part - understand or at least grasp at the higher, universal truth that lies beneath them.

Okay, but that wasnt really a response to my point. If God is a mathematical theorem we are basically atheists. So this thing which starts as a “higher IQ” version of religiosity boils down in the end to atheism because these guys can’t handle the idea of a personal God whom you can connect with and pray to.
Well in that case Rome slaughtered their Eastern brethren in the fourth crusade
“Rome” didn’t do that. Renegade princes swearing allegiance to the Pope did it. Here was Pope Innocent III’s response:
>To Baldwin, Count of Flanders and Hainault
>You took upon yourselves the duty of delivering the Holy Land from the Infidel. You were forbidden under pain of excommunication from attacking any Christian lands, unless they refused you passage or would not help you (and even then you were to do nothing contrary to the wishes of my legate). You had no claims or pretensions to the lands of Greece. You were under the most solemn vows of Our Lord-and yet you have totally disregarded these vows. It was not against the Infidel but against Christians that you drew your sword. It was not Jerusalem that you captured but Constantinople. It was not heavenly riches upon which your minds were set, but earthly ones. But far and above all of this, nothing has been sacred to you-neither age nor sex. In the eyes of the whole world you have abandoned yourselves to debauchery, adultery and prostitution. You have not only violated married women and widows, but even women and virgins whose lives were dedicated to Christ. You have looted not only the treasures of the Emperor and of citizens both rich and poor, but have despoiled the very sanctuaries of God's Church. You have broken into holy places, stolen the sacred objects of altars-even including crucifixes-and you have pillaged innumerable images and relics of the Saints. It is hardly surprising that the Greek Church, beaten down though it is, rejects any obedience to the Apostolic See. It is hardly surprising that it sees in all Latins no more than treachery and the works of the Devil, and regards all of them as curs.
>To Doge Enrico Dandolo of Venice
>"It was you who deliberately deflected a crusading army designed to make war upon the Saracens. You despised my legate and treated my excommunication of you with contempt. You have broken your Christian vows, and have despoiled the churches and their treasures. Tell me, if you can, how you can ever redeem yourselves-you who have turned aside a Christian army destined for the Holy Land ? With this great and powerful army not only Jerusalem but even part of Babylon might have been captured. The proof of this is that an army which could so easily take Greece and Constantinople could equally well have captured Alexandria and the Holy Land from the Infidels."
Once again, the Catholic Church comes out spotless against all accusations.

>first line
no that's the same conflation that they make when the christian/muslim says "if no israelite god (i.e. if the clown story i was brainwashed wit turns out to be garbage when i study it),
then anything goes (i.e. i can fuck a horse if i see fit, for: i am God of israelites),"
really this is just the same brainwashed person having moved from stage 1 indoc to stage 2 indoc, hanging onto 100% of what they were brainwashed with and only superficially believing (without evidence) that they've broken free of it.
>f all religions are the same
they're not, there are many many religions
I said that it's astounding that animism and polys theism with near identical stories and practices sprang up organically across time and continents; if you call it religion, okay, but there's so much going on there than to reduce it to the level of dumb worship.
>I’m not like those dumb Christians
That's the point though; the mentality that "god is real, literal, and i WORSHIP" is literalism; it is wrought upon the flatout denial to all reality and the metaphor and parables in virtually all religions; since all religions have some element of story going on,
abramism -is- different, demonstrably so, because what is an obvious story or a teaching allegory to a grown up from here or there, is declared to be Literally True -as a mark of faith- by the christian, muslim or yahoo.
>high IQ
It's not that either, if all the world understands metaphor except from those groups then it's not "me/world high IQ," but rather "they/abram mentally retarded" - i argue that the religion is regressivism designed to hook and perpetuate that child-like part of the mind which is blind to reason (declaring anything either good or evil) which produces monsters: genocidalists, morally intellectually black, ignorant barbarism (plunder, robbery, slavery), etc., and the religion merely provides a justification to indulge in those evil acts which, at that point, come naturally to the disposition.
>and of course even condemn them as demonic
But they are obviously demonic. UFOs, gnostic enlightenment, interaction with extradimensional intelligences, communication with "ghosts", are all classical demonic interplay. This is like Jesus 101.
The seeming shit-tests and secrecy function as a filter for those who can really learn and benefit from it, processing them out from those who would be like “the one single dog it takes to foul the entire pool of rosewater with their piss”. Cynical doubting complainers, or people so sure in their beliefs they would only be there to argue and claim the superiority of their own experiences and wisdom, instead of considering there could very well be people more advanced than they who have been initiated into a serious and rigorous school of spiritual training, even people they might despise on first glance as “primitive backwards barbarians and kooks from another culture,” or “charlatan occultists.” Which is not to say primitive backward barbarians, charlatan occultists, and even demonically self-aggrandizing cult-leaders don’t exist and often overshadow the possible “Real Thing.”
Even the table of contents is amazing to read through to get a sense of Manly P. Hall’s scholarship. You can also easily find a PDF of it online with a quick Google search (I believe it’s in the public domain now).
Although I don’t want to self-centeredly take up too much of the thread with my sentimental verbose rambling, especially because I’m not much of an authority myself and am instead humbly speaking in praise of those who I find greater authorities than myself (slavish as that sounds), I nevertheless am gonna post the table of contents just so you can get a sense of MP Hall’s vast range of scholarship and what’s in the book:

CONCLUSION
__
Anon’s own addendum: to Christians, Muslims, israelites or anyone else of goodwill, no offense is meant or belittling of your religion, overly strong as I may have come on in my earlier posts. If anything, there is nothing but the greatest respect I have for the wisdom to be found in these traditions. If you disregard this and still view it as blasphemous to your faith to even bring up such perspectives as these, then I hope we can at minimum agree to disagree with no ill-will meant, even if I am deluded, in the wrong, or “on a dangerous path.” Peace and goodwill towards all men on Earth.
(Also, I am not a Freemason nor urging anyone to enter Freemasonry; interestingly, Manly P. Hall wasn’t even initiated as a Mason before he wrote all of these works; he joined and eventually progressed AFTER already writing quite a lot of his works, which were based both on publicly available research he could find, both about and directly from Masonry and other sources, and on extremely obscure texts he scoured libraries, the bookshops of antiquarian collectors, very old and rare alchemical manuscripts, etc. for).
Finally, even if you take the view that this is all the sinister work of dark occult forces, you have to at least respect Manly Hall for putting it all out so you can see what “your possible enemies” are up to.

Apparently, there's also another chapter included in some versions of the book, which is a reprinting of an Alchemical manuscript. My copy doesn't have it, but Sacred Texts lists it in their directory.

I really enjoyed the Hierophant stuff of Ancient Egypt and Greece. Talking about the acoustics of the pyramids were fundamental to its initiations. There’s a lot of really interesting stuff.
Its just fucking "dude, the skibidi toilets have the omega overlord" type of shit
Just random schizo words pasted together to form "coherent" therores, with the occasional nugget of wisdom.
90% schizo shit, 10% gold. Better then his "competitors" though, which hover at the 95% rat poison 5% gold
If you are talking about secret teachings I don't recall there being much theorizing tbh. It was mostly just a summary of beliefs and overview of important terms.
Manly Hall downplayed his works later by saying he was just summarizing work already out there and he was right - most of these are both outmoded and outdated - there’s been large strides in research basically everything he’s written about 100 years ago. He very much reminds me of that “how to read a book thread”, he wrote a very nice compendium of /x/ contents for the 1920’s but now we have free access to GBs of in-depth modern research. We also know both the Greeks and the Egyptians eventually adopted ways of thinking from the Near East so I can’t in all honesty find much worth in his stuff.
Library genesis - and basically any influential books on the greeks and other topics. The biggest thing Manly misses is the importance of the Sumerians and the Akkadians on the Greeks and the Egyptians, which essentially carries down to basically every other tradition because they all essentially claim lineage to either of them. The one topic I profess ignorance on is the Kabbalah, but israelites love to naval gaze and they’ve put out forests worth of research on their own occult tradition.
For Sumerians -
Epic of Gilgamesh
Atra-Hasis
East Face of Helicon (important book talking about cultural drift to Greeks)
The Orphic Poems by the same author above, who covers what we do actually know and don’t.
Of course its just a combination of other writings, its called the secret teaching of all ages. It wouldn't be what it claimed if it wasn't sourced from old material. >but now we have free access to GBs of in-depth modern research.
You got the sauce? Id love to read it. I went through /x/'s occult reading list a few years back and, except for the original occultists like blavatski, steiner, crowley, and gurgief (to name a few, and even there they were mostly derivative which isn't inherently bad), there was very little that diverged from halls summaries in the secret teachings.
The greatest antidote to new age quackery is real historical research.
I have read everything on your list there except for East Face of Helicon. I will check it out. Thanks anon. Don't think there was much lineage drawing in secret teachings at all aside from maybe Pythagoras on Platonism. Im going to be honest, the lineage stuff and the missing out on some teachings means much less to me than the accuracy of what he did include in the book which, from my readings up to this point, has proven to be accurate, if with the tint of masonic language. >The greatest antidote to new age quackery is real historical research.
Hey Im down with that if the historical research ever actually shows anything that debunks that shit. I would be hard pressed to lump the secret teachings in with new age works though because again, its just kind of a catalogue of existing lore more than anything.
new age stuff (not necessarily even speaking manly hall here) are all about equating traditions and trying to create a tangible backdrop of esoterics (which is why you see many westerners pick up eastern traditions and mix it with new age bullshit); the historical reality blows up a lot of the early 20th century presumptions (such as exposing the true historicity of the tarot) as well as showing what the west inherited is largely their own spin offs from near east traditions from the sumerians.
this pisses off a lot of people because I find that a lot of anti christians "hate abrahamists", but end up espousing traditions that still draw from semitic or semitic-adjacent sources (abraham was born in Ur, for instance)
Oh I see what you are saying. I agree. If Im honest I do not even completely understand what makes a thing fall in the category of "new age." I just kind of assume anything that sets off my radar as hucksterism using the occult as their justification as new age. Buy my shiny rocks and my home made terot deck kind if stuff.

I've listened to many of his lectures by torrents/YouTube - he's got about 60 years worth of lectures, each about 1-2 hours long and he used to give at least one lecture per week, on every topic imaginable. Very well worth your time.
there is a sort of energy that emanates when you listen to his lectures, i listened to a couple of them on YouTube and it radiates hope and tranquility. Highly recommend.
I haven't listened to his lectures yet, but my feelings upon reading TSTOAA were similar. His writings on so many different traditions and teachings are tied together by a very universalist spirit.
secret teachings of all ages was pretty interesting
I'm listening to an audiobook of The Initiates of the Flame
most of it was fan fiction though

I respect the effort post good anon. Appreciate it.

Because practicing the virtues and praying bring you closer to God.
>know them by their fruits
The RCC's documented atrocities are infinitely greater than Freemason boogeyman stories. I wouldn't even be surprised if they are one and the same in the upper echelons of the Vatican.
What RCC documented atrocities? The history of the Church is spotless as Vatican I proclaims. Freemasons caused the French Revolution, brought about the secular state.
>The history of the Church is spotless as Vatican I proclaims
Hm yes, spotless, quite.
*covers up child rape to avoid bad PR in your path*
The “Catholic Church” is not the Vatican II Church which set up its reign in the 1960s. There hasn’t been a valid Pope since Pius XII.
Well in that case Rome slaughtered their Eastern brethren in the fourth crusade
yet you don't lay the charge at synagogues (rabbis literally suck off children at circumcision) or the public school system which has about 30x numbers of pedophiles in high positions

making up that i said something i did not is not a good argument either, christcum.
oh, you're a israelite. sorry to hear that. try reading some more.
>christcuck invents nonsense, doesn't reply to anything said, then says the other person is a israelite, 2 replies in and wildly off topic and hasn't offered anything on topic
Why are you all like this?
>If all religions are the same then why should I go to church pray or be moral?
Because them all being the same doesn't make them less true. Its not just philosophy in the form of some story, it is philosophical praxis on how to best be a part of the universe. This statement you are making seems like the only value you see in religious philosophy is being on a winning team above others. Your head must be a dismal place.

>Because
there's no mention of virtues in abramism, only inversions of vices portraying them as if they were virtues.
>SUMER
not really true, you're still doing that abramic "we wuz" thing yourself; you're looking back for "the first humans" and believing they held a monopoly on all things, rather than noticing that globally the vast majority of civilizations developed a very similar culture in polytheism and animism. The literalism stuff is abramism; stupidity for babies and monsters.
>you're looking back for "the first humans" and believing they held a monopoly on all things,
it's the earliest religion we know of, predates greek religion about a thousand or so years, and it's quite obvious they inherited the polytheistic belief systems. it doesn't take a genius to think "hmm...aphrodite is an awful lot like ishtar in gilgamesh..."
>but what about other global cultures
we're all essentially the same humans, and there's a number of similar ways to interpret esoteric experiences (like getting hopped up on goof balls and thinking you were a rabbit in a past life)
>it doesn't take a genius to think "hmm...aphrodite is an awful lot like ishtar in gilgamesh..."
exactly, it's surface level pattern recognition, it doesn't takea genius to notice thaaaat.
>Once again, the Catholic Church

no that's the same conflation that they make when the christian/muslim says "if no israelite god (i.e. if the clown story i was brainwashed wit turns out to be garbage when i study it),
then anything goes (i.e. i can fuck a horse if i see fit, for: i am God of israelites),"
really this is just the same brainwashed person having moved from stage 1 indoc to stage 2 indoc, hanging onto 100% of what they were brainwashed with and only superficially believing (without evidence) that they've broken free of it.
>f all religions are the same
they're not, there are many many religions
This is like Jesus 101.
all life in the universe not in the israelite bible is a demon! only solomon can command demons with his magic ring!
>demos etymology in mob psychology is of no interest to me, i'm a literalist and paradoxically a member of the slavering mob of retards
Yes! It is obviously demonic. UFOs and abductions being the most obvious instance Our Lord Jesus warned us about 2000 years ago.

Secret teachings of all ages is, if nothing else, a cool, expansive lore book. Even if it does have a masonic bent in its language.
Better then his "competitors" though, which hover at the 95% rat poison 5% gold
>namefag
Nyah!
If you are talking about secret teachings I don't recall there being much theorizing tbh. It was mostly just a summary of beliefs and overview of important terms.
Didn't read btw
P Hall sisters, I really enjoyed Secret Teachings what are your other favorites
>Manly P. Nis
List some modern research sources you like
Library genesis - and basically any influential books on the greeks and other topics.
Of course its just a combination of other writings, its called the secret teaching of all ages. It wouldn't be what it claimed if it wasn't sourced from old material.
>but now we have free access to GBs of in-depth modern research.
You got the sauce? Id love to read it. I went through /x/'s occult reading list a few years back and, except for the original occultists like blavatski, steiner, crowley, and gurgief (to name a few, and even there they were mostly derivative which isn't inherently bad), there was very little that diverged from halls summaries in the secret teachings.
>manly pee hole
>seems interesting at a glance.
He's a classic old-Americana riverboat conman, his whole business is about appearing interesting at a glance
I've listened to many of his lectures by torrents/YouTube - he's got about 60 years worth of lectures, each about 1-2 hours long and he used to give at least one lecture per week, on every topic imaginable. Very well worth your time.
>Manly Pee Hall
there is a sort of energy that emanates when you listen to his lectures, i listened to a couple of them on YouTube and it radiates hope and tranquility. Highly recommend.
Hope is a dangerous thing.
Hope can drive a man insane.
I haven't listened to his lectures yet, but my feelings upon reading TSTOAA were similar. His writings on so many different traditions and teachings are tied together by a very universalist spirit.
this is a good channel
