Mac Mini RAM

So I need a Mac Mini mainly for editing 4K video. Just curious if anybody here has experience with that, because I'm not sure if the base model with 8 GB of RAM will be sufficient, or if I should shell out the extra $200-ish for the 16 GB model.

    It’s not enough.
$200 for 8GB extra is robbery, but it’s 2023. Don’t buy a computer with only 8GB, especially for working with video, especially on a computer you can’t upgrade memory.

15 years ago you'd be editing 1080p video if you were lucky

Maybe keep an eye on refurbs.
    Or OWC Macsales.
You might find a 16GB or even 32GB model for a good price.

Think a late 2018 Mini with 16 GB of RAM would do the trick? I don't need the latest model, just something that can efficiently edit and render 4K 24 FPS video on Final Cut Pro.

you can't edit 4k on intel macs.
refurbed M1 from 2020 with at least 16gb of ram is what you need.

i'm doing it on a 2400k from idk, 2012? you need metal gpu, scrub. start shutting the fuck up before giving wrong advice, updooter.

2018 Intel Mac Mini can edit 4K footage just fine.

              Yes, I am extremely proud.

Admittedly my other computers have fans (:

only if you have an egpu since uhd 630 can't even run 4k monitor at 60fps

If I wanted a Mac Mini for video editing specifically, I’d get a 2020 at least. The first gen Apple silicon.
You might squeak by Intel graphics but the leap to M1 is significant.

When there's not enough RAM, the system uses the SSD somewhat, since it's speedy enough (well, enough to make it an ok user experience). I have the 16 GB model and recently it was going up to 90 something GB of "RAM" used before having issues while trying to do linear programming stuff. I haven't used it for video, but I'm guessing it can go over the 8 or 16 GB RAM for that too up to a certain point, with everything still managing somewhat. I'd still go with the 16 at least if you can afford it.

For the cost it would take to get a 4k capable Mac Mini, you can already get a 2X or 3X as performant Windows or Linux machine. You sicken me with your wasteful ways. I spit in your direction, and before every step you take.

I am a sucker for aesthetics, UX
I see the appeal of Apple.
What they charge is reasonable enough, for toy computers like laptops.
If I was *really* looking to edit serious video… I’m not getting a Mac Mini, and probably avoiding Apple.
I’d get a nice Supermicro board with Xeon, real ass graphics card, Streacom case for looks, and use Resolve on RHEL (or sigh… Windoze)
        Idk I’m just sayin.

Yeah you're just gonna have to shill the 200 on the ram. Price of doing business I guess. That's Apples way of upselling, but everybody does it.. Assuming you are already equipped with monitor(s) etc, it probably is your best option.

BTW if you're doing this for a profession of some sort, shill out real money and remember the investment your equipment is. Don't know if that needs to be said, but if you were serious about your LULZ you wouldn't be asking about Mac Minis.

    >Mac Mini mainly for editing 4K video.
you need 32gb of ram, I'm serious, and the biggest available SSD. youre going to be working with files that are literally 20+gb in size for an hour of video, importing and scrubbing through your clips is going to hammer the fuck out of that poor mac and even at 16gb youre gonna be doing hella swaps from SSD and on a mac once it burns out you have to desolder BGA chips and replace them with new ones, not something even louis rossman will do

if youre specifically working with apple pro res you just need to get a mac studio. 32gb + 1tb is $1900 with a mac mini and $2300 with the studio. yes the cheapest mini will still work but it will be slow(relatively) and I dont expect it to last

if you arent using apple standards then $1299 would get you a very solid pc with 14 cores, 32gb of ram, and 4tb ssd

mac studio is slow as shit and already has an outdated gpu. nvidia is much better for video production

What do you mean with "enough"? I have a mini m2 base model 8gb and it will never swap ram if I just browse the regular web with 10 tabs and discord and a torrent open. If I open a game ram swaps and if you are editing 4k so will yours. is that bad? CPUs and GPUs are advancing fast nowadays in 3 years any computer will be a facebook machine, i doubt you will swap enough ram to kill the SSD in3 years.

I'm sitting here hoping the M3 Macs will all have 16GB RAM for the base models.
I'm not expecting it from Apple, but I figure there's a possibility they might do it to give people a reason to upgrade considering M2 Macs have sold like shit.

I really like the colored titlebar when you use the small tabs option. It's one of the only good things from mobile browsers.
