I've been looking to buy a steam deck, I am impressed with its performance and I only play lightweight titles and old games anyway, so it handles just about my entire library
Any deckbros willing to tell me whether its worth it or not? Is there really significant any difference between the 256 gig model and the 512 one regarding the glass and its reflective nature? is it as bad as some people say? and just much hours can i get out of it?
also how loud are the fan noises i am autistic
>worth it or not?
Is to me
>any difference between the 256 gig model and the 512 one
Barely. If you plan on using it outside in sunlight a lot then the more expensive model's screen might make a difference. Otherwise no difference at all. Obviously if you don't want the higher end screen, you should get the cheapest model and upgrade the storage yourself for way less money.
>just much hours can i get out of it?
Depends on what you're doing, but not many. You can easily look up specific numbers for specific tasks or games.
>how loud are the fan noises
They don't bother me but they're definitely audible.
I own the 64 GB model, upgraded the SSD to 512 GB and applied an anti-glare screen protector.
Honestly, I don't use it much. The main problems are the screen and the size of the device.
I mean, I get they have to use a low-resolution panel to get playable framerates. But it just sucks having a screen that is significantly worse in both resolution and color reproduction than that of any cheap smartphone.
Also the Deck and it's case are huge and hard to pack for travel. It's easier to fit a laptop into my backpack.
Screen resolution is perfectly fine. Colour reproduction and backlight uniformity suck ass.
the screen also has image retention issues.
In my experience it has very good reaction times and there is no ghosting at all. Colours look bad but it still performs very well in games.
I've never seen image retention or backlight uniformity issues, but the colors look somewhat desaturated compared to my other screens.
Backlight is a hit or miss. Mine was a miss but it’s still not as bad as some of the Decks I’ve seen online. I’m glad you were lucky enough to get a good one.
keep it in big picture for like 10 mins, it'll retain the image for a few minutes as a sort term burn in. same thing happens with game UI stuff, my gif is one digit of the timer in tetris effect, looks like a zero to the eye but I took this vid at 960fps
it's not a huge issue considering its use case, but still a problem.
>sort term burn in
short term*
I've left it on for 10 minutes with the Performance side-menu opened and there was no retention whatsoever after that.
Interesting. Maybe you got a faulty unit? Mine doesn’t do that.
That's a weird way to phrase screen retention.
>animated burn-in
wat
I use it with EmuDeck and it's pretty good.
Screen is meh, I wouldn't recommend playing outside in the sun, it will be a miserable experience.
I can get 2-8 hours of gameplay depending on the game.
Fan is pretty loud, at least for me and only when I play modern games like BOTW, but you can easily replace it with a quieter model, or just clean it.
I got the 256 GB model, for my games it's more than enough.
I got the 64gig one and swapped in a 1tb ssd for less than $100 more. If you only play old and lightweight games you may consider getting an 8bitdo controller and just emulating on your phone.
I got the maxed out model and mostly play PSP/Vita ports on it, it's super comfy for those
I got my mom the 256GB one and she likes using it to play Valheim even though she was a nogames normoid before. She also uses it in desktop mode with an external keyboard because her 10 year old laptop can't really keep up any more
they're super good
How quickly it will become obsolete? Sure, it can run modern AAA at 60 fps on medium settings or even high sometimes. Even if it's standardized hardware like on a console, will many devs bother to optimize for it in the future unless it will be a requirement to publish on Steam?
>Sure, it can run modern AAA at 60 fps on medium settings
lol no it can't. It can't play most recent AAA games on low without running at <20fps. It's a handheld with no discrete GPU - it's unreasonable to even expect it to handle that. It can certainly handle a lot of AAA games from years ago or older though, and tons and tons of indie and emulated games.
i saw it play elden ring and god of war ragnarok. Maybe I misremembered the 60 fps part
These games are not that new. They both run well. I think Elden Ring is 30fps on the Deck.
>Sure, it can run modern AAA at 60 fps on medium settings or even high sometimes.
In your dreams. Steam Deck is an indie and emulation device that handles pre 2021 AAA games very well. New games don’t really run on it that well. That’s something everyone should know before buying one. It’s a great little device but it aint a high end gaming PC substitute.
>Sure, it can run modern AAA at 60 fps
HAHAHHAHAHHAHA fucking delusional steamies man.
Awkward shapes makes it annoying to carry in backpack. Still for short gaming sessions it's more convenient then laptop and for new device can't really beat price to performance of the 64gig model.
don't fall for the retarded meme
just get a controller attachment and use your phone with a much better screen
wait a bit. A refresh is coming pretty soon.
Lolno, Steam Deck 2 is 2025 minimum. Switch 2 is 2024 though.
I think he meant hardware refresh and not a straight up upgrade. Same specs but slightly modified to fix shortcomings of the original design.
just like all the other refreshes valves done with their hardware, eh?
I’m not saying that he’s not full of shit. I’m just saying that he most likely didn’t mean Steam Deck 2. There already is a refreshed version in the wild but it’s a very minor revision. Different cooling and slightly different motherboard.
there are literal leaks of something steamdeck related in the works
whether its a revision or not is yet to be seen but whatever it is, it needs audio drivers and has WLAN and its different enough to have a new name (Steamdeck is Aerith, new device is Sephiroth)
ok schizo
sorry to burst your bubble, its the deckard
wait a bit. A refresh is coming pretty soon.
Where are you getting that information from?
Its a total meme. Just get a cheap notebook and a controller.
>Muh playing outside
Noone plays games outside. If you are outside you have something to do and not playing on a handheld like a 10year old.
>t. too poor to travel
>yeah I came to this country for a week to stand outside and play games on my little autism machine
based
>Retards never heard of hours long flights
thats why you are poor i dont mean the next village ranjeed
So worse than a laptop + controller
>worse than a device more than twice the size for the same purpose
how retarded are you?
>muh size
If you are traveling, you are going to bring a laptop with you anyway retard.
No i wont because im not retarded and have the steam deck
Imagine bing bing wahooing in a plane kek. Just read a book
If i go traveling i dont play games, retard. I can do that at home on a big screen with actually playable framerate
>Any deckbros willing to tell me whether its worth it or not
Do you hate sitting at a desk? Do you have significant downtimes where your only options are looking at your phone
If you can find one for msrp or less then its worth it
>Is there really significant any difference between the 256 gig model and the 512 one regarding the glass and its reflective nature
Go on niggit.com/n/steamdeck, there's like 10 trillion comparisons
>and just much hours can i get out of it?
I get 2.5-3 hours on naggerlands 3 and about 4 on lighter titles like a short hike. If you're playing really undemanding games you can easily turn down the tdp to 3w at coast for hours and hours
>also how loud are the fan noises i am autistic
Depends, on jedi fallan order I have it cranked all the way up to 13w and its audible but not annoying but with lighter games like a short hike, I forget it even has fans at all
>like a short hike
That game was cute
I have the high-end one and it comes with me constantly
It’s worth it. You should get the 64GB model on sale and upgrade the SSD yourself. Fans can be a bit loud when playing demanding games. It’s definitely louder than Switch. Screen is not very good but the upcoming update will make it much more palatable. I own the 256GB version so no idea about the matte screen. In general it’s a great little device. I love mine.
it has a fan?
Yes. Like a laptop. I think it can draw up to 20W with unlocked TDP.
Only issue with the Steam Deck is that there is absolutely no promise of future game support.
So far it has a good track record of just running current games but this may change.
If you buy any other gaming console it is implied that there will be optimized games for it in the future.
Im surprised at how well it runs shit like GTA V.
I like mine for stuff like Emudeck though too
Its good for couch gaming or in bed
its an over adecade old game bro even intel xe graphics run the fuck out of it
Yeah, it's worth it if you're actually going to be using a handheld. I haven't seen the 512GB model IRL but my philosophy on the different screen is that I'd rather have a regular glass screen and if I want something different I just get an appropriate screen protector. The 512GB model is overtly expensive for the storage capacity, if you're willing to buy an upgrade SSD separately and replace it yourself then you can just buy the 64GB version of the Deck and replace the storage. If not, just get whichever you think fits your needs. For your use case of old & lightweight games I would think just using an SD card will work identically to a bigger SSD, though I've seen some people complaining that the 64GB model can fill up with cached shaders and Proton shit or something like that, so you may want to get the 256GB version at least.
I don't know what the fans are like on the newer Decks, on release there were 2 versions, one of which had a more annoying squealing kind of sound than the other, though in terms of actual loudness they were kind of equal. In any case if you're only playing lightweight & old games then the fan should be effectively inaudible, it only gets loud enough to be bothersome if you're playing something which pushes the Deck to its limits.
Ok, but this is the question which remains, should I just buy the 256 model and get on with it or wait until the second steam deck comes out? has there been any rumors which have come out of valve indicating to when it will release and how much better it is?
New model is not coming out anytime soon. If you think that you need more power than what Deck has to offer then buy that new Lenovo thing but keep in mind that these devices suck ass as portable consoles and will rape the battery even while playing indie games. Deck is much better as a portable device. It’s chip was actually designed with low power draw in mind.
go cheap and upgrade as needed its just a few screws and a screen protector away from being better than the 512
I received it back in May 2022, I think I used it five times. Thanks for reminding me I have one
>Any deckbros willing to tell me whether its worth it or not?
I love it. It's comfy, ergonomic, and runs all the game I usually play, with some rare exceptions. If you want to play demanding games or don't care about playing while relaxed on the couch or the bed, or while commuting, it might not be for you.
>Is there really significant any difference between the 256 gig model and the 512 one regarding the glass and its reflective nature? is it as bad as some people say?
I have the 64GB: a 256GB microsd gives a better value to the overall package compared to the bigger SSD. Screen is bad, not very bright nor accurate, and very reflective; you can tune colors through a plugin to make it that bit more accurate.
>and just much hours can i get out of it
Depends on the game. A demanding game will drain the battery in two hours; Papers Please drains it in eight.
>also how loud are the fan noises i am autistic
Not much, usually. I had a delta fan (the whiny one). Bought a replacement, the other brand, which should be better, but it's equally whiny. The fucker was 30 bucks. Best mod is replacing the thermal paste with the Honeywell PTM 7950 thermal pad, it will make the CPU run 5~10°C cooler.
What would you talk about regarding the Switch which is relevant to this board? The Switch is a video game appliance, there are plenty of threads which discuss it on the intended boards.
I love my steamdeck, perfect for my metroidvania library. streaming from the pc is great too, extends the battery life when I want to game in the garden
You can go to any store and see a Switch for yourself, handle it, maybe try it. It's also plausible that you know someone that has it. Deck is niche, harder to have some sort of hands on experience, hence threads on the internet asking for opinions.
Man you are retarded.
Besides what others have already said...
Let me put it this way, switch is a locked down toy.
Deck is a full fledged hackable PC.
Just get a Switch
I got a second hand Nintendo Switch instead. It's cheaper and has longer battery life, but the games are so expensive I'm reconsidering getting a Steam Deck.
its way too big for the stated purpose
