Linux (the kernel) unironically sucks

People often criticize "Linux" as an operating system for various philosophical or nebulous reasons spanning the entire suite of the FOSS software ecosystem. But you know what? Fuck the kernel itself. You would think that updates would really only be about hardware support at the end of the day, but it isn't. They make major changes for the sake of making major changes, break your shit, and refuse to elaborate or care. Literally the only problems I experience are due to the Linux kernel.

Allow me to give you some examples:
>updates kernel
>computer no longer wakes from sleep
>updates kernel
>monitor now flickers with adaptive sync on
>updates kernel
>tpm module's existence now causes intermittent stutter
>updates kernel
>mic no longer works

This is just in the past fucking YEAR. Good luck "reporting" your issues because chances are your hardware configuration is unique compared to everyone else's unique systems so why would they bother. The kernel developers are slinked back behind layers of obfuscation (even if it is just satisfying their outrageous and never satisfactory log requirements) that the issue with your hardware caused by some shitty update will never be fixed. It moves too fast, makes constant changes, and breaks shit with no regard for users at all. I have NEVER updated a Windows machine and wondered if suddenly some of my hardware would become buggy or unusable. And if I did, I guarantee you they would do something to fix it quickly.

>"but, but, but l-look at all of the Phoronix articles, l-look at all the COOL SHIT they are doing and constantly fucking with bro look waowee it is time to update wowzas"

There are a plethora of reports with everything there that they simply do not give a shit about. I am not making up lies. A kernel update should NEVER break my shit, and the reality is that ti does constantly. If something works one day then does not work the next, that is the fault of the developer.
The development philosophy and cycle of the kernel is fundamentally flawed. They are too aggressive and too loose with kernel development.

You're an obvious novice. Use the laptop for two more years and watch as the updates start introducing problems you didn't previously have.

There is no "model" to it. It is my desktop computer. Every problem I have ever had has been reported before by others and left unresolved. I am not going to comb through and find them again just to prove to some homosexual that I am not LARPing

Here is a screenshot of my desktop literally right now. Rest assured I am just as autistic as you but at least I admit reality

Wayland isn't to blame for any of it. I don't care what your sperg opinion is or what preference you personally have. Wayland is my choice and many other users' choice.
Updating the KERNEL caused my issues and updating the kernel breaks shit. That is the reality.

I am not here to fix or troubleshoot my shit precisely because it is unfixable. These are documented issues introduced by the kernel. One moment my monitor did not flicker and the next moment it did, and it happened after a kernel update. Wayland is not to blame. Wayland's adaptive sync is actually excellent. The only issue at this point is cursor stutter which can be fixed by not using a hardware cursor. I am not going to argue with you about display protocols. The kernel introduced it.
People like you turn so many away. Wayland is default on Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL in the next update, it is used as a game compositor on the steam deck. Quit your bullshit. I don't care about your sperging. The kernel should work around the existence of Wayland no matter how much you pretend it shouldn't.

I haven't experienced any of the issues you are mentioning here.
I've been using different Linux kernels on 3 different machines for 3 years (2 laptops and a desktop). I had to learn when to use Wayland and when to use Xorg (one of my laptops has MATE for a DE and it doesn't support Wayland at all).
All my machines are 10 years old or more (one laptop was purchased in 2007 with Vista on it and was upgraded to Win7. Someone tried installing Win10 on it and it works but was not practical to use -ddr2, core2 Duo-).
That laptop has a distro on it that is customized to be easy on limited resources (old hardware).
I am mentioning the age of these machines because that is what attracted me to GNU/Linux, bringing new life to old hardware.
I don't think I would use a distro on anything less than 2 years old and expect it to function properly. Hardware is released first for proprietary OS's that have paid for the firmware to be written and used in agreements between, say, Microsoft and nvidia (or intel, realtek - a long list).
Linux code writers have to discover the hardware now exists and THEN make firmware available for it. There are plenty of exceptions to that like AMD making source code available but even then there is a lag between the hardware release and linux coders getting things ready for it. They simply are not part of the hardware production process, it's all by discovery after release.

        tldr
If you computer is working well with a kernel, then you upgrade to the next kernel and you have problems, just go back to the kernel that worked for your hardware. There are NO “should be able...” or “I want it to do...” . It is firmware that controls hardware. It does what it does, no more and no less.

Linux "lts" is really just a few arbitrary updates behind. Whatever issues they introduce at that moment do not suddenly disappear or suddenly will not be introduced in the next update.
Ubuntu, Debian, whatever bullshit will pick a kernel and then you get to enjoy the same problems from that kernel. It is almost entirely arbitrary and will never change due to the nature of the development strategy of the kernel itself. It fucks everyone, at any moment in time because their strategy is too aggressive.

It’s not. It gets patched with bugfixes and security. It’s considered stable enough for daily use. You should only use non-LTS releases on hardware that’s not mission critical or inside of a vm. This is literally your own fault.

This is not a problem with the kernel, this is a problem with the development model. Hobbyists simply don't care about you, if it works on their machine that's good enough to ship.

ChromeOS for Chromebooks and SteamOS for Steam Deck works fine, because the people responsible for pushing updates have full control over the hardware platform.

Shit goes wrong with Windows and Android often enough still, because of the anarchy of hardware and firmware outside of Microsoft/Google's control. They try, but still fail.

As someone who has been a Linux it for like 19 years or so now, you only update the kernel when absolutely necessary. Hardware support etc. that’s why we have lts and lts based distributions. The only updates you should be doing to the kernel are patches only. Short of supporting ecores, there’s nothing in the latest kernel that I’m aware of that you need. So why aren’t you using lts?
