The official motto, "In God We Trust," used in some capacity since 1864, and the pledge of allegiance, either the 1954 or the original 1906 form, all fit with that. The Creator, our Creator, is still above us. There are however no middlemen. The government is only instituted in order to to protect the inalienable rights of the people. So nobody is above anyone else in that regard, except for the Lord, since the Lord our God is still above us.
