all of their albums are so poorly mastered and engineered that they all sound bad. only way to listen to less shit recordings by metallica is via live show recordings, but even then you have to put up with Lars fucking up songs on drums and Robert missing notes on his bass.
Thats what struck me when listening to it recently. Ride the Lightning/MoP clearly sounds distinctly "metal" in the modern sense, but Kill Em All almost sounds like something out of the 70s on certain tracks. Especially Motorbreath.
They just invented chug. Something really only Metallica would do as well as most thrash was more interested in being fast. Metallica invented groove metal before Pantera.

portions of ride the lightning (the song) have an undeniable groove to them

WaW. Look at this guy right here. He definitely did think for himself and didn't just repeat what someone else said on the ETV since he cares so much for it.

NO REMORSE

They were 19 years old and recorded it in three weeks bruh
doesnt excuse the horrendous bass/guitar tone
Unreasonable good sounding, half of the listening enjoyment is due to guitar sound and james vocals
We will never stop because we're Metallica
Who knew they were right about that?
fagtallica
YOU CALL US FAGS
YOU CALL US WIMPS
YOU MAKE ME FUCKING PISSED
YOU ARE A BITCH
YOU ARE A CUNT
AND YOU WILL BE DISMISSED
lm;fao
And what was the last album you put out?
Juist a little thing called "SMile"
I don't particularly care for it, but Whiplash is fucking awesome
It's amazing how old the album sounds -- it feels like "rock and roll" in certain places.

Right. The Four Horsemen swings. It feels like motorhead or something. A major cultural shift happened between kill and RTL
