I tweaked and installed a few things and checked that files opens with the correct programs

he told me his windows had a 'virus' and that his ui was confusing with things 'poping up' everywhere etc
he specifically asked if I could install him the same 'os' that he saw on my computer...
I use arch but thought debian would be a good choice properly configured

Why the fuck didn't you just put Mint on his PC? Debian is meant for servers or systems that won't be touched for 10 years and isn't fit for normies.

I installed Ubuntu LTS for my dad and he was confused why his laptop feels so fast and new. Never bought new laptop and instead continued to use old laptop. To this day it is same installation after years of use. Everything just works. Even printer works without manual driver installation that was suprising even for me.

did the same for my boomer homosexual drunk dad about 10 years ago before he stopped using computers and phones a couple of years ago. he used that laptop daily for business and did just fine, but then again he never really did more that email, office, scanning, spreadsheets etc. he had never used anything but windows before. i fired that thing up recently for shiggles, and it was ubuntu 12.04 lol.

the wifi card is some realtec bs and neither the realtec firmware bundle or individual firmware package did the trick
      upgrading the kernel did though
      >Will you manage the updates yourself?
I guess we'll see if he figure out sudo apt-get update / upgrade by himself
I could alias it to something self explainatory or whatever
that's why I was asking how long will debian hold without being updooted

Debian is among the most stable operating systems you can install.
    >couldn't get the wifi working
Sasuga Debian. Next time, try an unofficial non-free installation ISO with firmware. It's somewhere on the Debian site, Google will find it.

      >Next time, try an unofficial non-free installation ISO
      nah that wouldn't be fun

I know you managed just fine, I just wanted to make it easier in the future - but if you're having fun, that's fine too.

        unclear what it is
        lsblk list it as mmcblk0

also the network card is a RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter
and good luck getting it to work without a recent kernel
even installing drivers manually did nothing

        >unclear what it is
Could try sudo fdisk --list /dev/mmcblk0 to find out more, it should show have a 'Disk model' line.

my debian testing setup broke in 4 days. But that was the NVIDIA vs kernel issue. Maybe your relative will be more lucky.
Also installed manjaro in dualboot with windows for my grandpa (he also specifically asked for this). He abandoned it almost immediately.
I feel like they agree to linux only to see us more

    I basically did the following

    >burn debian 11 iso on usb stick
    >went to hp laptop bios to tweak a few things
    >installed and removed windows entirely
    >set grub timeout to zero
    >autologin
    >uninstalled gnome bloat like the 20 games and shit
    >changed repo to unstable
    >got newer kernel and removed old one
    >wifi and bluetooth now detected and working
    >dark theme
    >dash to panel with one fixed workspace
    >found a better debian pape
    >checked every file extention open with a sane default app (vids in mpv etc)
    >removed the 'recent' nautilus entry
    >added expresso
    >put exemple of each basic type of file inside his directories (few mp3 in music, few pics in Pictures etc)
    >put a little .txt in document with basic advices like shortcuts like I would explain a toddler

should I add gimp or some other shit? libre office is already there

funny thing is I installed linux on some other boomer laptop two days ago
    I picked mint
I was embarassed because cinnamon is mess
also he came back today because mint rebooted into a busy box initramfs prompt instead of his desktop...
It was just a quick fsck with the file system path to type to fix it but I was mad
so for this new boomer I picked debian
will switch mint guy to debian as well if it goes better

This, by the end of the year debian testing (bookworm) should be out. I'd just use testing if I were you.

          Also on stable/unstable/testing:
stable <- testing - after enough time testing becomes stable and a new testing is created.

unstable - might be added to testing, but never 'ends' its an unstable rolling release, it will always be sid. some packages are inherited from sid to testing.

I installed mint to another boomer 2 days ago
the next day he send me a picture of his screen saying 'the computer is broken and he thought linux was good'
what happened was mint did a kernel upgrade (not sure if he did anything) and randomely booted on shell instead of login
he saw the initramfs prompt of busybox and gave up
I actually did exit - copy filesystem path - fsck said path then exit and fixed it after reboot
