They all said interacting with him is exactly like stepping onto an episode of his garage show. One of them owns a modified Caprice wagon which was their "showcar" and according to this person Jay asked just as many questions about this car as he would a guest on his show.
You'd have to be the most devout communist in the world to see Jay as an elitist and I'm sure even some tankies think he's cool.

Because they're literally and unironically the smug elitists of the car world. Ferrari owners tolerate not actually owning their cars (they effectively just sign a very long-term lease that they stop paying for after a few years which has ironclad clauses of what you can and cannot do with the car) just because it lets them keep out the riff-raff. The Cognoscenti are assholes.

Ferrari owners can do whatever they want with their cars.
The only example you have otherwise was someone trying to sell a Ferrari as a different branded car.

It was only for some limited edition that they only wanted to sell to Ferrari owners. The story i liked was that Deadmau5 (some house dj) had a wrap with the nyan cat on his Ferrari and they got mad and told him to remove it so he bought a Lambo instead.

            Anonymous

Iirc it's because he made a custom logo that said Purrari and it used a Ferrari font so they considered it a copyright infrigement, not because of the wrap itself

              Anonymous

He modified the logo, which is a legal infringment.

Iirc it's because he made a custom logo that said Purrari and it used a Ferrari font so they considered it a copyright infrigement, not because of the wrap itself

They were pissed about the emblems when he listed the car for sale. And it was supposedly Trademark infringement, not copyright. Which would nix the possibility of a transformative "fair use" defense. Still cheaper to swap it back than pre-emptively sue over the C&D in court or wait for a lawsuit that also has to be litigated.
The other issue was that he would breach the "right of first refusal" that all new Ferrari owners agree to when purchasing their cars. Which states that owners need Ferrari's permission if they want to sell their cars.

Ferrari owners can do whatever they want with their cars.

Gas Monkey Garage was a shitty show.
They outsourced the real work to another shop down the street and took credit for it.
                But...
When he got that wrecked F40 and "rebuilt" it, AND painted it black I laughed my ass off. I still laugh everytime I think of Ferrari fanbois crying over the mere mention of that car.

    Since we're shitting on Ferrari....
I worked for Exotic Racing in Las Vegas.
You can "rent" cars and take them on a road course. It's $200-$500 for a few laps.
They have Gallardos, a couple Aventadors, tons of Porsches, F440's, F458's, a GTR etc.
When Ferrari finds out they have one of their cars they cancel the warranty.

    They also have some McLarens.
When a McLaren breaks down they send a flatbed from L.A. to pick it up and take it back to do an autopsy on the failure and bring it back in a day or two.
Mclaren is in constant contact and they want any and all information about the cars performance and issues.
I'm not shilling for McLaren, personally they don't "do it" for me. But what Jay was saying about their customer interaction is spot on. It's not just because he's a celebrity that likes cars and his reviews could actually have an affect on their sales- they genuinely care about customers, the purchasing experience and the ownership experience.

      Anonymous

      >Mclaren is in constant contact and they want any and all information about the cars performance and issues.
Especially when you're letting members of the public beat the shit out of your cars on a track constantly. That's data you WANT to know when that kind of stress testing costs a company a fortune because they would have to rent out a track, all the safety shit that goes with it, hire drivers, bring in mechanics for a long weekend. Et cetera, et cetera. Sending a flatbed to pick a car up is nothing for them so they can pick the car apart and go through the data logs.

        Anonymous

        >members of the public beat the shit out of your cars on a track
probably gives some useful telemetry on the average drivers behaviour

          Anonymous

Precisely. As mentioned. Doing their own testing will cost a fortune. Instead you sell a car to a place that runs track days. Jimmy "Lead Foot" McGee gets gifted a track day by his trophy wife and proceeds to beat the ever loving shit out of the car for a few hours and treat it like anyone does any other rental. Repeat several times a day, all week, for as long as it takes until the car breaks and wait for the call. For the price of a flatbed, go and get it picked up and then go through the car to see what's worn and any telemetry data to see how it's being driven.

You just can't get that kind of data about your consumer vehicle when you have a professional driver and team of mechanics spending a few hours each day over a weekend for a few million dollars. This is the same reason manufacturers will buy back million mile vehicles. Not just for the bragging rights, but so they can go through it and get the owners information on what they did to hit that milestone.

            Anonymous

            >so they can go through it and get the owners information on what they did to hit that milestone
And mitigate the "issue". Don't want the cars to run too long after all.

        Anonymous

But we're back to my original post.
Mclaren is the only manufacturer that does it.
        Lamborghini and Ferrari void warranties.
        Porsche ignores their existence.
But some McLaren rep calls them up on a Monday morning and says "hey, break my shit over the weekend?".

      Anonymous

      BTW.
      I hate to say this.
The GTR was the fastest around the track.
I wish it was an Aventador or F440 scuderia but the family sedan that has a roofline a foot higher than everybody else is king.
I actually laughed at a pic I took showing that massive, bloated GTR with all the "supercars" around it.
BTW 2.0... an F440 scuderia is faster than an F458. But God damn that 458 is sexy
