    What's a computer?

      Anonymous

A computer is a digital electronic machine that can be programmed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations (computation) automatically. Modern computers can perform generic sets of operations known as programs. These programs enable computers to perform a wide range of tasks. A computer system is a "complete" computer that includes the hardware, operating system (main software), and peripheral equipment needed and used for "full" operation. This term may also refer to a group of computers that are linked and function together, such as a computer network or computer cluster.

Smartphone with rainbow-like display held in a hand
Black desktop computer with monitor on top and keyboard in front
Purple video game console with attached controller
Rows of large, dark computer cabinets in warehouse-like room
Computers and computing devices from different eras – clockwise from top left:
      Early vacuum tube computer (ENIAC)
      Mainframe computer (IBM System 360)
Desktop computer (IBM ThinkCentre S50 with monitor)
      Supercomputer (IBM Summit)
      Video game console (Nintendo GameCube)
      Smartphone (LYF Water 2)
A broad range of industrial and consumer products use computers as control systems. Simple special-purpose devices like microwave ovens and remote controls are included, as are factory devices like industrial robots and computer-aided design, as well as general-purpose devices like personal computers and mobile devices like smartphones. Computers power the Internet, which links billions of other computers and users.

I have 12 general purpose computers in varying states of disrepair, most in storage, i only use 2 of them and really only care about 4-5 of them.
For fun, I'll count another 4 android devices and probably 8 game consoles which are old enough to be hacked and capable of running homebrew software.

Best way to have a PSP battery now is basically yanking the PCB out of a clone battery and connecting a phone battery (about no bigger than the one found on Galaxy S2 I think) and removing the UMD drive.

If you can take the UMD drive out, why not use a bigger battery?
I'd rather use a power brick connected over USB than deal with gross permamods like this.

Love that machine, I hold the geekbench world record for it. Still, even after cutting additional air intakes on the bottom, using liquid metal, giving it the highest capacity, fastest memory it can take, and overclocking it out the arse, it barely touches a contemporary dual-core i5. Fun machine though, quirky hybrid graphics, jet engine noise, weight and heat, warts and all. Getting GPU offloading to work under GNU/Linux and modifying the BIOS made for a good afternoon.

I thought about getting a A10 laptop to get away from the PSP management engine (and cause I think they're cool) but it's so easy these days to run me_cleaner on a much faster laptop. Do you have pics of the cut out intakes? I love seeing modded laptops

Here you go. I wanted to make a radioactive symbol, and added some mesh to avoid exposing the fan. If you want to get an a10 laptop, get one newer than richland, with GCN graphics, so you have vulkan support. They also support 1866MHz DDR3.
Mine has a dedicated GPU, basically a 7870 on a MXM module, but the integrated graphics are terascale, which creates a lot of headaches, under Windows especially, works under GNU/Linux with some tinkering though.

Very cool computer. I'm looking at some A8s now and noticed the 5557m and 5550m are actually very close in performance to the A10s of that era. Do you think there's a significant difference between the best A8s and the best A10s? Unfortunately the best AMD CPU I know doesn't have PSP is Piledriver (5750m/5757m), but I'm now looking more in depth and I found that while the Steamroller desktop chips had PSP, some of the mobile APUs might not have it.
If that is the case, I'll definitely try to get one with GCN. Don't those early GCN GPUs support both the amdgpu and the radeon drivers? Which do you use?

                Anonymous

Only difference between the a8 and a10 are the graphics and supported memory speeds. CPU is the same, 2 modules, 4 threads, no L3 cache, clockspeed varies however, but you can easily lock them to their turbo frequencies with bar-edit on windows and turionpowercontrol on GNU/Linux (and overclock if you have an engineering sample). Do note that engineering samples don't always have restrictions on memory speed, my a8 runs 1866Mhz memory just fine.
                >early GCN GPUs support both the amdgpu and the radeon drivers? Which do you use?
I use amdgpu for the dedicated graphics, since that's GCN, and radeon for the integrated, since that's terascale. That mismatch means I lose some power management features like the dGPU shutting down when it's not used, which is fine, the battery is dead anyway, but in return I get vulkan compatibility. There is no reason to stick with radeon on GCN.

Thank you for your answers. Only engineering samples can OC, even including processors like the FX 7600P? How do you know you're getting an engineering sample?

                Anonymous

Engineering samples are generally sold as ES or QS. It says "AMD Eng Sample" on it, where you'd normally see the regular part number. Unlike final silicon, they have an unlocked multiplier.
