to me this is the most absurd part of this whole thing
all they had to do was rebody a model x with this dumbass steel truck body and sell it for +10% margin compared to the lightning and rivian
they could have had first mover advantage, expanded into a different market segment, and further cemented the superiority of their charging networks

the overall stagnation of the quirky startup commanded by an eccentric billionaire just shows that they've run out of 'disruption'
each month this thing doesn't get delivered is a massive advantage to the relativly slow moving legacy carmakers
gm, vw, toyota all know how to make a fricking car and they may be slow/cautious to adopt new/risky technology but when tesla ceeds their advantages to these behemoths they become worthless

It all comes down to costs. This truck will have longer range and will be cheaper than anything else on the market.

Tesla is a luxury brand, they CAN'T sell it cheaper, it would damage the brand image.
There's a reason that Mercedes made Smart, BMW has Mini, GM has both Cadillac and Chevrolet, Ford has Lincoln, Dodge has Chrysler.
Branding is the largest part of selling fricking anything, is Tesla wants to move downmarket they'll have to make a sub brand (Edison maybe, but I assume GE has that trademark) or they'll drag the ENTIRE BRAND down

            Anonymous

Tesla is not a luxury brand.
They started out as an technology-themed exotic maker, but then moved to mass market cars.
A model 3 is cheaper to lease than a Civic but Insurance companies will still classify it as a “luxury” car to demand more sheckles.

Only people who want to distort what Tesla is will call it a “luxury” brand.
For example there’s Tesla fanboys who will say it beat bmw or whatever in luxury car sales but then include the model 3 in that count.
They are of course wrong and moronic to do this.

I don't care about the meme "bulletproof" glass. Its mainly the fact that this car has almost no innovation going on above and beyond their other cars and yet it has been delayed so long. By the time this thing hits the road it will have a competitor from all 3 American makes plus Rivian. The fact that all these electric "trucks" besides the F-150 are unibodys with 4 wheel independent suspension is kind of a joke as well. Would be cool to see a manufacturer take it seriously and build a full-frame truck with good ground clearance and an electric beam axle.

they're hubcaps, with a bespoke sidewall design that's gonna make those covers either look like absolute shit or not fit at all when it needs new tires and you either can't get the original meme tires or want something different (like an off road tire instead of highway tread)

            Anonymous

The tire isn't really aligned with the wheel there so maybe you can rotate the hubcap to line up. That wheel itself looks way better than the stupid caps though, actually a nice design wasted by being hidden. Tesla did the same shit with the Model 3 too.

Yeah and (at least on the Ford SDs) you lose half the cab features when you switch to bench seat.
            Still neat.

For plywood or whatever, sure, but it seems like it'd be a challenge if you're using the ramp to get an over-long thing like a dirtbike or ATV in there, trying to lift the gate with weight on it would probably be a problem.

Oh yeah you aren't going to be able to ramp something up and then lift it into half lock with the thing still half way on the gate. It seems like you either ramp something short up and then close the gate completely or you put it in the normal open position and use it like you would any other bed.

This built-in computer shit is so moronic - why don't they just put in a fold out desk with a charger so I can use my laptop comfortably?

I think eventually when they come up with self driving (two more weeks lol), but if they do, the car cabin will logically transmogrify into a complete computer desktop.
Because with your hands free while driving you’ll want to be clacking away on a keyboard or something of that nature.
And they don’t need to fit everything into a laptop form factor because they have the whole car’s space to make use of.
So by the end of this process it will literally be a desktop on wheels.
But for now you still need to keep your hands on the steering wheel.
So you’re only going to get babymode touchpads for the foreseeable future unfortunately.

          Anonymous

First, I don't necessarily want to wait for the full self driving breakthrough. I also don't want more non-car shit built into my car. They came out with the games console thing in Teslas which is like a $8k upgrade, literally only 16x more expensive than a PS5 but functionally identical.
There is a general trend of 'thing' costing X, but 'thing but in car' costing 10X while being shittier and not upgradable.

I know what I want. Give me a desk, and a power outlet inside my car so I can drive to some remote spot in the middle of nowhere and work from there. EVs have 2 big advantages over regular cars in this area- you have almost unlimited power as in you can run a household for days off an EV battery and the ability to run the AC without running a gas engine. It could be a tiny vacation home on wheels.
