they are okay but definitely are pretentious with their overdramatic sound

yeah, their original pop hit is better than the post rock stuff

I was pretty dissapponted by The Bands first album.

does not insist upon itself, although I will say their songwriting is a little overrated

      tool

      yes

nothingface by voivod is the worst shit i have ever heard in my life

NO!!! one of the best metal bands

      Death Grips

they songs are a lot cooler than those of anyone that tries to emulate their style, but yes

        Death Grips

With Death Grips it doesn't feel like it's pretentious music, but it's the reaction to the music that is pretentious.

Nearly everything under prog and whatever it influenced (indie, postrock etc.)

I honestly almost never hear anyone on this board talk about Talk Talk

    literally all post-rock.
    literally all sample-heavy ""midwest"" emo.
that Avalanches album that came out a few years back.

the fact that anyone ever liked it boggles my mind. it's not unlistenable earrape or anything, but i genuinely felt embarrassed listening to it when it came out. the record is overly sentimental in a way that makes me pity it. like i'm supposed to feel hyped or nostalgic or whatever while all i feel is boredom. really a shame as i expected to love it.

Yea its a shame. I really liked wildflower too, one of the last albums i feel that has a hopeful aura around it

gotta be soundtracks for the blind. i love a lot of swans, pre and post hiatus, but if that album got released as a "b-sides and oddities" collection i don't think I would have noticed the difference

I liked them in Highschoop bu5 the appeal runs thin after a while.

Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Radiohead.

Tool were like the worst Nu Prog Band and Nu Prog was already kinda both unnecessary and prettymuch entirely bad so thats quite the statement. Definitely right about that.

pretentiousness is GOOD in rock music. take the best rock album of all time, DSOTM by Pink Floyd, for instance. if it wasn't pretentious it would suck. rock as an art form is inherently pretentious. if it's not pretentious, I don't wanna hear it, it probably fucking sucks

Yeah, I think it's this. The poem concept is contrived and I hate it more year after year and the fact that it ends in a circlejerk interview with tupac is incredibly pretentious.

1950s rock n roll: the most genuinely unpretentious music of the past century. Find one song with any pretence. you can't. Every single song exists to create a knee-slapping good time.

Imagine complaining about “pretentiousness” in music in current year… What better way to make yourself look like a gentrified Brooklynite with a mustache and fixed gear bicycle complaining about the most recent Band of Horses album in 2008? Complete homosexualry.

If you can’t enjoy music unless it’s inclusive, accessible, inoffensive, and not too white, then you’re on the wrong board and should go get a job at Condé Nast and join their DEI committee. Pretentiousness and elitism are increasingly rare in music, and should be preserved as a buffer against Globohomo.
