depends on what you intend to use it for? some things work better than others, also it is free to test, why don't you just test it out for awhile?

every time i try to do something that should be very rudimentary on wsl (e.g. starting a local mysql server), i have to edit some config files as sudo to get it to work.

for a server I wouldn't recommend it, you're booting into windows to run a linux vm to run a server, seems like it would be easier to just run the server on windows or bare linux on another dedicated machine

it's useful for shit like e.g. testing in docker before pushing to prod, which is all it's really meant for. as an actual linux substitute it's still meh and wslg is a joke

If your intention is to use WSL for development or for running some obscure Linux software, it's perfect.
If your intention is to customize your OS like you customize your body, you'll be sorely disappointed and I would recommend installing a troonix distro.

windows has a better linux emulator than linux has windows emulator

I mean that is kind of expected, Microsoft has acces to the source code of linux and windows
the developers of Windows emulators don't, they have to reverse engineer black boxes, it has taken decades and will continue to take decades because proprietary code isn't freely available to read

NT4 and XP leaks are in the wild, and I'm sure some beta hoarders already have 7 source code on their hands.

It's illegal to use that code in FOSS projects. No legitimate project is going to touch it.

in addition to what that other anon mentioned about the code being radioactive, that is still only W7 which is deprecated, Windows 10 and 11 use a newer kernel, have newer features, and that still ignores directX which afaik didn't leak

      >it's easier for a $2.5 trillion megacorporation to bring an open source operating system to their proprietary OS than it is for a community of mostly middle-class software developers with little outside funding to bring software compatibility for a megacorp's proprietary OS to an open source OS (especially when the megacorp in question is unwilling to cooperate)

      Figures.

If you're just using CLI apps, WSL is pretty good. I can run SD in it with no problem. I don't know about the GUI side though.

    very different use cases
WSL lets you use superior linux tools for development on windows, but if you don't want your OS to spy on you then you have to make the switch

Embrace, extend, extinguish. Linux for desktops was already kinda extinguished, so good for M$.

linux gui applications run terrible in wsl and they crash often. Even windows in a vm on linux without gpu passthrough works better.

there's no reason to use Windows at all
there are no Windows-only programs worth using
Windows itself is painful to use
M$ cucked themselves hard by letting everything in their OS get so out of sync in terms of design and philosophy
Nothing feels cohesive, visually, and it extends to use the way you use the OS. Why are there 5 different ways to save something in M$ Word? Why does M$ Word use a different save dialog from every other program? Why does it want me to install shit to OneDrive?

Windows just sucks. Thankfully there is no reason to ever use it. Just don't. I haven't used it in years.

wsl2 is about as good as it gets. there is no reason to boot into linux whatsoever, you can do everything that you could possibly need to do in linux with wsl2, without having to suffer the absolute disgrace that is the linux desktop

      >there is no reason to boot into linux whatsoever,
Windows sucks and Linux doesn't. There is no reason to use Windows ever.
