We actually consider it an insult to feed your guests and friends. The message is that you have no money for food yourself and need the host to feed you. It's fucked up. Down south they invite you in and treat you to a meal like family but its all just cold here.

You know, if someone thinks that getting food from their host is a sign that they're poor, it means that they think that others would think so and that they would think so themselves.
And since such a sentiment is absent in the south, it can't be included in the definition of human nature and it means that it's a cultural thing.
Now, climate has a crucial role in the shaping of cultures (see the works of Kant and Hegel), and harsh climate and therefore harsh living conditions of the Germanic urheimat and current geographical is clearly a very good answer. Less food = less hospitality.
However, religion also plays a big role in a society's cultural life and the prevalence of Catholicism vs Protestantism aligns with the colours on the map well enough for this thread to have 30 replies.
Now, Catholicism has something called ,,salvation by deeds", which of course encourages hospitality, while the Protestants have either ,,salvation by faith alone" (Lutherans), which doesn't require hospitality, and ,,predestination" (Calvinists), which is kinda shit in this case.
And while I'm not saying that the lack of hospitality is caused directly by the different confessions, I suppose that the different confessions are caused by the lack of hospitality and uphold what is wrong.
Finally, the proportions of religious and natural causes of hospitality in different zones is left as an exercise to the reader.

Pharisees aren't just people with petty characteristics you dislike. They distinguished themselves by their emphasis on holier than thou attitude, obsession with man made ritual, traditions and hierarchies, and of course legalism.

There's a reason garden gnomes and Catholics both dominate the US legal system today and it's because their religious traditions resemble each other much more than Protestants do either. garden gnomes and Catholics both obsess over outwardly appearance, like praying the rosary over and over, sacrificing chickens or theatrically waving crosses around in public. It's religion of appearance rather than genuine faith. They both

Not at all. Just asserting that Germans are le bad doesn't make it so.

The opposite is in fact true. Germanics are notoriously egalitarian compared to other Europeans. They clearly don't value tradition and rituals very much as is evident by their modernistic cultures. And we've already covered how legalism is a Judeo-Catholic area of expertise.

And your analogy was dogshit because, as I've proven, you don't even understand what constituted Pharisaical behaviour. It's just a word you wanted to throw around to draw some flimsy connection between garden gnomes and Germans.

As for the the whole Prots/germanics are cheap debate. It likely has its basis in said culture's veneration of the nuclear family as the fundamental community of society, as opposed to the extended family or clans that are more common outside western Europe. This as well as strong presence of Prussian virtues still, specifically austerity and order.

Now please, do go and say 12 hail marys, pray the rosary 8 times and confess your sins to your priest so that your bruised ego and sense of superiority recovers.

Sharing a meal is a family activity. The assumption is that the parents want the kid to come home in the evening to have a communal meal. Germanics care about their children and don’t just leave them with friends or neighbors for the entire day randomly. It would be scandalous to have them just hang around with other families like they aren’t able to feed the child themselves. So it really has nothing to do with inhospitable behavior. During sleepovers of course the guest gets the same food as the host. But usually the assumption is that the families come together to share a meal. And that is one of these subtle cultural things that implicatly gets understood by everyone of that culture.

I don't think some kid bringing over the neighbors kid to play after school gives them the status of a guest as such, it's just the neighbors kid coming over for the fourth time this week.
When I grew up in Norway we would always go to each others houses after school, but there was always some set time that the Norwegians eat dinner by which everybody had to be home, and not coming home for dinner would require a special call and permission, saying that I always felt welcome eating dinner with my friends families, and often did.
I'm pretty sure that in all of Scandinavia any actual guest would always be offered food.

      >We dont force food on them like they do in other more "hospitable cultures" we're you're served shit food you dont want but you have to eat to not seem rude.
In Southern Europe, people will always serve their guests the best food they have available. If you don't want to eat you can always decline respectfully.
      >Food is not seen as some luxury you show off to guests. We asume everyone have plenty of food.
Food isn't a luxury in Southern Europe. Serving food to your guests is just a sign of hospitality.
You are meant to treat the guest like a family member, this is what nordoids don't get. If you tell your guest to wait in a room quietly while you go eat something you make the guest feel like an unwelcomed stranger.

The point is not so much that you *have* to feed every guest in your home, but rather that if you are going to eat something while a guest is with you, you should always offer them food too.

You do not understand basic notions of hospitality and sociability. Offering food is a requirement when yourself is having food. When you invite someone, the least you can do is to treat him on an equal foot. And its means if you allow your self to eat, you give him eating too.

You are also responsible of him, and you have to make sure he is feeling well in your home. You are his servitor for this aspect.

So that's not only a technical question as you were playing the Sims managing his amount of Hunger, Hygiene or "Small needs" ...

maybe it is that inviting strangers; non family members to your home is a relatively new concept for g*rmanics, while for people who enjoyed higher civilization for longer (meds, arabs) it has been the norm for thousands of years to share your luxury with visitors.

So do you go to dinner and eat while your guess just stand there waiting for you to finish?

Just asking it just sounds weird to me that someone would just eat and not offer even a snack or anything.

Adults let other adults know when they arrive so dinner isn't done when they're around. Kids can appear, then vanish for a few hours, appear again for 30 minutes, only to vanish again.

You don't have to prepare a full meal everytime somebody steps in your home, but having dinner while your guest waits in your room is inhuman, even if you didn't specifically invite your guest for dinner. Either wait for the guest to leave on their own and then have dinner or invite them to eat.

this map correlates closer to germanics then to protestants(see catholic belgium, france, austria, switserland, also anglosaxon britain vs celtic scotland and ireland, also the more germanic north of italy)

I imagine it's quite the opposite in the USA. The South (overwhelmingly Protestant) is all about food. This is a cultural thing, not a religious thing.

Protestants are notoriously stingy while catholics can't budget and spend too much.
You can even see it at the state level, compare italian and spanish debt to german or sweden.
Only countries that challenge this are meme countries for tax evasion like Luxembourg and Ireland.

Spain and Italy had a much better debt situation when they were much more catholic. Theres no correlation whatsoever, if anything theres a stronger inverse correlation lmao

Debt has inflated everywhere but it's much higher in historically european protestant countries than catholic ones.
The dichotomy was the most obvious during the Renaissance in France, the moment they exiled the huguenots (who saved and invested much more than the catholic bourgeoisie and nobility who tended to just spend) they lost heavily economically while the countries that welcomed them (England, the Netherlands and what would become Prussia) took off.

Ireland was a poor country for most of its history of independence and the tax-evasion wealth is recent. Even when it was poor it was fiscally frugal. The Irish are an anomalous people with a mix of med and nord traits.

thats common in Spain, but its never a full on dish. Mostly a bottle of wine or something you can snack on before the actual meal. And it is absolutely not obligatory, just a sign of good will on the guest's part. You wont be ostracized if you bring nothing.

In Northern Europe when a guest comes over I'm usually not eating and they usually aren't either, if I'm having dinner and a guest comes over of course I'll offer them food. If you visit a Southern European, they are usually in the middle of 3rd breakfast/5th lunch/20th siesta and bust scoffing down food from a trough so its customary to join them eating.

The courteous thing is to not serve food if it isn't specifically an occasion for a meal.
How many times have you been forced to stomach some italian friend's godawful 'cooking' because you happened to step into their house and they won't shut the fuck up unless you eat something?
If I didn't specifically invite you over for a meal, rest assured I will not force you to have one.

The US is dominated by Protestantism and the host providing food for a guest is a widespread expectation. It might just be nordic autism. I doubt the accuracy of that map though
