why is it so hard to find emo as good as those two?
i guess there's just no way that anything can compare, when bands like lobsterfight try and do TBLA it just ends up mid
there's loads of great fucking emo right there though, i would say raein - sulla linea d'orizzonte tra questa mia vitta e quella di tutti and matsuri - endship are worth as much attention as the other two mentioned here
same with the lazarus plot, eucalypt, pansori, nevasca or mouse fitzgerald tbf
raein is good but not in the same (sub)genre as these two, it's much closer to screamo and it's very noisy and technical and angry and raw (all things i love) but there's just so much going on in JGBFTD and it all comes together in such an earnest glorious nostalgic clusterfuck it achieves peak music for me. TMATLDPH is legitimately a perfect fusion of post-rock and emo in a way that crafts a perfect story and forms a single art piece in a way almost no other emo album can. Obviously just my opinions, it's hard to truly elucidate what makes these albums so incredible. Maybe I just need to listen to raein more though. Haven't listened to any of the others so I'll give them a shot, I fear it may be too late for me at this point though because I got into the other two when I was 18-20 and I may just be associating a time when my brain still had more than a speck of dopamine inside of it with these albums.
might be the case, imo it's also sort of stupid to compare or turn an album down solely because it doesnt meet those expectations that you would want the album to achieve from the things that you've alrdy listened to and have strong feelings towards
TMALDPH is certainly one of a kind adventure that tells an incredible story and has all those crazy ups and downs, it's one of the best out there but i still get a lot of feelings and emotions comming out from other albums
also personally speaking albums are not only solely just the music, it's also the album cover, art and names that point out a cohesive structure that can tell way more than just what you can hear
that sort of feel strucked me the most when i was listening to the lazarus plot for example, the music is incredible and the lyrics are powerful but looking at the album cover and the all the visuals within the release painted an even bigger picture in my head upon giving in a throughout look
one of my favorite emo albums of all time is coate - kot also, which isnt a rly well known album per se but the way it has been executed was just so beautiful and mesmerizing to me that it strucked me deeper than anything else

would you believe it if I told you you were based
I'll try out Lazarus Plot and that Coate record tonight
>closer to screamo and it's very[...] angry
I never thought of screamo as angry music -- it's more an expression of frustration. When I hear the term "angry music" I think of hardcore music that meatheads shooting steroids listen to.

anger and frustration are similar emotions to me

My interpretation is that anger is directed outwards and frustration is directed inwards.

deep and true tbh
thank you for expanding my brain even if it's just by an inch
the best midwest emo, i'll give you that, but screamo is the superior emo subgenre for me. check out corea if you want something more post-rock and kulara if you want prog.
>midwest emo >neither band is from the midwest >90 percent of the genre isn't from the midwest, but rather the eastern seaboard (and philly), california, or canada
why is emo like this
glad u enjoyed it anon !!!!! also!!!! aside from coate and the other ones i mentioned i forgot to mention abt strictly ballroom, comic sans, bells on trike, purplane, pictures can tell, very secretary and climb the mind, they are all similar in the vein of coate and stuff so im sure u will enjoy them all!!!!
just noticed i mentioned the wrong post lol. thanks for the recs, aside from strictly ballroom all of these are new to me. will check them out

Corea and kulara are based, portrait of past is okay, but everything else kinda sucks
I guess it's still a fundamentally better subgenre than midwest emo, at least it has way more energy
I don't think it's fair to compare the waves of emo to one another, the genre evolved so wildly between them. How can you compares Rites of Spring to SDRE to Brand New to The Brave Little Abacus? Fool's errand, Diary is some GOAT second wave though
Nobody ever shuts up about this album when their actual masterpieces are their demo and Okumay. I can’t even listen to Discomfort, I would say it’s genuinely boring.
The whole album is great, especially when they really go for clean riffs and slow down a bit.
The lyrics are so fucking real, they're basically just letters set to music.

Both very true. Good Atmosphere is also very good, if a little cluttered. Very strange how their albums feel so boring and yet their shorter projects are some of the most exciting music I've ever heard.
They read like poetry, which is kind of vague but they read like philosophy, confessionals, and poetry. I really love that mix of confessional, poetic, and philosophical

you're wrong but The Buffalo is their greatest track, legitimately transcendental
The somewhere out there cover is so beautiful god damn

TBLA - Masked Dancers
Newfound Interest in Connecticut
American Football LP1
Cap'n Jazz album
Mock Orange - Nines and Sixes
Bells on Trike self titled
Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader
Elliott False Cathederals
Marietta Summer Death
Lobsterfight Sun Soaking
truly the best emo band of all time. rarely is there such an obvious standout in a genre such as BLA - taking all of the established norms and and aesthetics within emo and completely flipping it on its head, creating music that could only be described as inventive. everything that any midwest emo band has ever done - they did it better.
bit off topic but hows stuff like merchant ships get lumped under the same umbrella with shit like rodia or the album in OP? I like them all but they are all pretty distinct - does emo not require a distinct style or sound?
You’re correct anon
>is but a step behind
Emo-prog/post-emo thread?
Okay this album is also based

I assume it's because the kinsella bands were from the midwest and they kinda started the whole thing.
just seconding, the coate record is great. enjoy it
thanks anon i will

Okay well no one mentions those so you can't blame me
The somewhere out there cover is so beautiful god damn
didn't know this was an album i knew some autistic schizo canadian guy on steam that put this as his avatar though
What's the lore on why they put Ben from Applied Science on their cover?
Its an old photo of the singer's dad iirc
I don't care much for debating which one is the best, as much as I will say that this album is near and dear to me
The Washington Square Park riff is so cash
The whole album is great, especially when they really go for clean riffs and slow down a bit.

god when the final part of the buffalo starts i'm ready to go to heaven
I love this album and it's considered emo
good pick
I actually prefer their debut album tbqh
