*is the best band of the 90s in you path*
*still touring and drinking like The Replacements in 1984*
Their albums were all recorded in a shoebox but as a live band playing 100s of original songs they are untouchable.

They were pretty much the greatest band in the world at one point. Too bad Pollard was too much of a drunktard and never evolved that much. Their last great album was Earthquake Glue.
Pollard is pretty much capable of writing catchy song after catchy song.
What more is there to evolve. Should GBV just start making "experimental" wank for no reason at all
I would go a step further and say that everything post Earthquake Glue is mind rot indie landfill dad rock. I think some stuff off of Spacegun was actually pretty good weirdly, but generally I would say Pollard has stained the discography of his life's work by putting out trash nonstop for over 10 years.
He needs a serious rethinking of his sound. He should do a hard stop on rock music and make an album led by piano and a string quartet. Listen to the solo song Flowering Orphan and you can see he could totally pull it off and make a great record, but no he keeps making in one ear out the other rock music at a nauseating pace.
Even Tobin Sprout put out a non rock solo album a few years ago and it really worked good for him.
nah, pollard is a legend despite all the indieslop he's released since the classic era. i mean seriously ask yourself if you really think robert pollard at this stage in his life and career really needs to reinvent himself? for what reason? most groups never live to see the day where they release records as spectacular as bee thousand or alien lanes. they had a great run
Yeah everyone knows he bangs these albums out and has zero quality control. It will end up at the indie landfill but Pollard gets a pass for being as cool as hell and also for mixing in a lot of stone cold classics in there. Genius plays by its own rules.
I just think it's wasteful to make so much low quality music when you're already known for having a plethora of good music from the 90s. Slow the fuck down and make a good album out of your comfort zone is what I say.
10 years from now the idea of sitting down and listening to every GBV and Pollard album will be a mammoth chore instead of a fun activity when he could have just left the 90s in the 90s and done something completely different. It would have been the better artistic choice in my opinion.
When he's too old to tour he'll put out a 50CD remastered greatest hits that will blow everyone away. Let him cook.
Huh that’s weird, you said best band of the 90s but that doesn’t look like Stereolab.
that's not how you spell Mercury Rev
both based
Alice In Chains >
very un-based and cringe
nope. aic is better than every band mentioned itt
If you're a boomer tasted zoomer maybe but come on, Stereolab and GBV are much more original and recognizable, AIC is music for bars and radio
aic is far more recognizable than fucking stereolab and gbv.
aic is good for anywhere, not just radio and bars.
this fucking aic schizo homosexual needs to fuck off to another website, fucking obsessed homosexual
i'm here to stay, homosexual
and you will see me in every thread
>oooooh I've come to fuck a roooosterrrrr
>now fuck me in my assssssss
only alice in chians song I know tbh, and it sounds really gay to me. Weren't they hair metal fags too, that just latched on to Nirvana?
>Weren't they hair metal fags to
They're far better than those glam bands, but yes, in their early days they jumped on the glamwagon.
>latched on to nirvana
this isn't even remotely true.
>Stereolab
Trips of Truth ... a band worth holding off on suicide for.
Don't get it. Sounds like a B-tier local bar band. Utterly bland and unremarkable. Don't understand why some people go so nuts for it.
It's a vibe, plus they've put out about 100 albums. If you didn't like their last one wait a week.
Everything I've heard sounds the same though. Do they actually have varied output across their catalog or no?
Their albums are recorded like shit, that's the aesthetic. Look for live stuff on YouTube, it's a million times better. And a lot of the impact comes from the volume of albums they have put out, Pollard has probably written and recorded over 2000 songs. Would it be better if he had 200 songs that were recorded competently? Sure, probably. But quantity has a quality all its own.
in the 90s, yes they are varied
in 2010s not too much. their albums don't sound the same exactly but to a large extent yes
How the fuck can you listen to the perfect songs on bee thousand like tractor rape chain, echos myron, peep hole, i am a scientist, etc. and think it's "bland and unremarkable"?
Sounds like shit m8. And not in a way that makes it more visceral or somehow more effective. Just boring songs that don't do much, played, sung, and recorded badly.
Definition of filtered
You're ears haven't adjusted to the magic sorry friend. I bet you wouldn't like summer babe by pavement either
that is what i call filtered hard but maybe you can start appreciate gbv starting with their mid-fi albums: Under the bushes the best one

you tried weed?
Only Alien Lanes is good
the band that concluded pop/diy music + top 5 best lyricists of all times
lmao
also one of the best live bands that I've seen
True, what separates them from bands after in the same mold was their ability to make actual songs that had great melodies and hooks.
i like gbv because the idea of a boomer teacher being a kino drunken indie slacker hero is cool
Tractor rape chain is the best song

Zoomers can't into this album because the songwriting style is inspired by the 60s and 70s. If you grew up listening to Imagine Dragons and shit like that you will be filtered and it will sound "boring" to you. If the chorus of Tractor Rape Chain doesn't instill any reaction in you, you are too far gone and you probably will be a pleb forever. Anyway, alien lanes, bee thousand, and propeller are some of the best albums of all time.
Not the biggest gbv fan but I admire him for having so much consistent passion for music regardless of aging.
after listening to like three albums from them i only end up liking three songs: game of pricks, Echos Myron and The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory
How could you not pick up on hot freaks? Or big chief chinese restaurant? Seriously, go listen to big chief chinese restaurant in your backyard or on your stoop with a cigarette and take in that song. Every time I listen to that shit i'm like 'what? this song is less than a minute and a half long and it evokes an emotion that literally only this song can?'
GBV are like pavement with actual songwriting directive. Listen to the Fall, too, if you haven't already
Alien lanes is in my top 5 favorite albums of all time but big chief chinese restaurant is one of the least accessible songs on there kek. Songs like my valuable hunting knife, motor away, good flying bird, king and caroline, and chicken blows clicked long before that one.
Same Place the Fly Got Smashed and Tonics & Twisted Chasers are two of my favourite albums of theirs
incredibly based. when she turns 50 is pollard's best song
