I thought those modernized BARs were a neat idea, but ARs and AKs have become the standard for a reason. They're cheap to produce and even an illiterate goat herder (or son of the American trailer park) can be taught to use one well enough to be dangerous. Most engagements in modern combat occur at a short enough range that makes even .308 battle rifles (much less a 30-06) unneccesary for the average soldier. Most just simply can't maximize the abilities of a cartridge like that without more training, and they often don't need to. Now it's all about short range contact with a lot of suppressive fire going on to support specialized troops (machine gunners, grenadiers, designated marksmen) which is what the AR platform was designed for. Why the armed forces (I believe specifically the marines) are talking about switching to new oddball wildcat cartidges and a new platform these days, I have no idea. It just doesnt seem worth the money.
Who knows, we really would have to have a real conflict between peer nations or a revolution to see if doctrine has truly changed from WWII. Everything has just been a military industrial excuse for the past 70 years.

The point of a weapon is to kill people, yes. If your argument is that a rifle is good at its job, then I would have to agree. But it is still just a rifle and nothing more. It is intended for military use, which includes an organised militia of civilians. That is to say, it fits well within the intention of the constitution for civilians to have access to such weapons for those express purposes. There is no exception made for war or peace time. It is an unconditional right. If America ever found itself in a war on home soil, the ability to muster militia armed with constitutionally approved military grade weapons is a massive advantage.

You can still kill someone with a handgun, you just wouldn't be able to cause as much damage quickly as you could with a AR-15. And in a home defense situation you don't need too in most situations, most people would go down with one shot.

AR-15 isn't really a powerful gun. Hunting calibers are typically .308 and higher. The projectile width is close to .22 caliber but it's a .223 rifle round. Yes, it can also take out deer and such, it's just not powerful in comparison to .308. It's nowhere near overkill, it's on the lower end of power.
