I thought I would hate them but actually enjoy mine a lot. Wouldn't spend more than $100 on one though, which should be easy if you're OK with a simple "paperwhite" style display or buying second hand.
>tablet
Now this was a huge waste of money. All the shitty parts of doing something on your phone but it doesn't even fit in your pocket.
Depends if you can get it second hand. I like mine. I have a color ereader. It's good if you read a lot. If you don't, it's more fun to collect physical books sometimes.
> higher refresh rate.
The rate itself isn't higher, it's still 15 Hz at best.
The difference is that the ghosting is far less pronounced so you can actually use them at such high frequencies.
The battery life on the TUC is still decent as long as you use the default reader and note taking. It goes down the drain once you do more than on normal ereaders.
It allows me to read PDF books that use color, and is usually big enough to display two pages side by side, like a book.
It has wide support for all sorts of formats.
I've heard that the GPU is mainly for minimizing ghosting.
Screen is pretty good for simple color books. Although I've read that colour is oversaturated at the OS level - not sure if they've fixed that yet.
Battery life is still way longer than most devices I own, unless I try to use it to watch YouTube videos or something.
What annoys me about it is:
- the default book reading app can show only 4-5 bookmarks on screen at a time, wastes too much screen space. Xodo (on my phone) is way more compact
- searching for a word in a PDF seems slower than it should be
- the browser seems to always display webpages in mobile mode, never desktop, even though I have this huge screen and you'd THINK that would be the whole point! Makes browsing websites very frustrating.
The pages are misaligned. The one that's right should be on the left and the one that's left should be on the right. The white strips on the edge should be in the center where the paper version folds.
Not much you can do about those until e-ink produces sqrt(2):1 panels.
At best you can turn on the status bar to display further information.

it's fine if they're on the side (and expected with manga aspect ratio) but I'd personally lose my shit if I couldn't display my mangas from top to bottom at least

How is it expected? e-readers are 4:3, manga is 1.41:1. It's always going to have space on top and bottom when you display two pages as intended.
Oh, I get it. They are in the right order but offset by one. Likely the wide cover fucks up the alignment (At least at 463382). They should add some algo that checks which edge is blank or looks for page numbers idk
If you read a lot of novels or linear progression books without much back and forth or charts. Hell yes. The portability and lack of eye strain is amazing. For comics, text books, or other chart or flip heavy mediums, its not ideal.
If your plan is to put textbooks on it, they're horrible to navigate, and don't zoom nicely into diagrams you might want to enlarge. Get a tablet instead if that.
I find my kindle to be too small to read manga pages with small text comfortably
make sure you a display thats larger than average manga page. For larger page comics youd need a tablet.
For text it obv doesnt matter since it can just be scaled.
I have a kobo libra h2o that i got for around 100 dollars. Works great, been going strong for over 3 years now. I can read all the books I want for free (torrent epubs), so it's practically paid for itself multiple times over.
I find turning the page on a physical book to be distracting, so having the button I just press with my thumb is great. It syncs to my calibre-web instance over wifi and has a built in adaptive backlight, that actually gets dim enough that I have to turn it up a bit when reading in bed in a pitch black room. Has a highlighting function for taking notes and a built-in dictionary you just hold your finger over a word and it pulls up the dictionary entry for it.
Overall very happy with it. You could probably find it used for ~$50
I have an old as shit kindle, paid 100€ back in 2007 i think, it has buttons.
Its good for reading books, not for textbooks since you cant write notes or underline properly (maybe on newer models with touchscreen it's better).
I am planning to buy a kindle scribe for that in 2 weeks, its expensive but I have a bunch of technical books collecting ssd dust.
I dont read comics and I have no reason to buy a tablet
A few weeks ago somebody asked for a 10" reader with page turn buttons.
Apparently the Tab Ultra C Pro has volume keys which can normally be mapped to turn pages and other stuff.
I don't think the placement is particularly useful since I tend to read mainly in landscape but we'll have to see if Boox is going to keep the concept.
>A few weeks ago somebody asked for a 10" reader with page turn buttons.
hey, that was me. looks like it also has a microSD port so that's even better. I'll consider it once I can afford it, thanks anon
maybe the oled tabs with high ppi are better
still its gonna weigh like 4 times more than an ereader
oled doesn't change much about it. reading on my oled phone definitely tires my eyes a lot more than reading on my e-ink reader does. it's two different experiences
It's supposed to be a document scanner.
It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't protrude out of the back and prevent you from placing it on a desk without a case.
Had one but it was a hassle.
Now I have a giant S8 ultra and would not go back.
The only thing that sucks is battery life but it turns out it doesn't matter to me.
OLED display with white on black is as comfortable to read as the eink.
another idiot propped up by the internet's intelligence >i need things only the materialistic and vapid need >i am very smart

Depends on use case and how much money is worth to you. Generally it's not, it's a nice toy but not much more. But if you want to spend the money, then fuck it go for it
I love my Kindle Keyboard. Old but gets the job done, although battery is getting tired. Was able to get custom wallpapers and even play music on it. I have a Nexus 10 for textbooks and any visual media.
imo no. the refresh rate means that a phone with ereader software is superior. if you turn it to softly glowing gray text on a dark background its easy on the eyes too. plus a phone can do everything else. theres no reason to have the hassle of having an e-reader and keeping it charged.
I never heard of anybody here owning a Dasung Not-eReader 103.
It's also from 2020 so it's not right to compare it to devices from 2023. The whole Boox Super Refresh stuff was developed to copy Dasung.
How is the kindle scribe? I have a paperwhite (i think third gen?) from that time there was a glitch where it was $50 when it was supposed to be $50 off, thinking about upgrading.
>staring at paper/e-ink fatigues your eyes less than staring at an LCD
This has to be the ultimate midwit take. To your eyes, it makes zero difference whether the light is shone through the surface or reflected off it. There is literally no difference in the light that ends up hitting your eyes. E-readers are better because they are more power efficient and can be more easily read in sunlight, not because they're easier on the eyes.
e-ink can work with a lot less light though. They don't have to use the frontlight to combat other light sources so they are intended to work at far lower levels.
if you are homeless yes because the battery lasts a long time and it will give you something to do
if you are non-homeless no. it's better to read ebooks with a laptop
>1366x768 >mfw my ereader has like twice that resolution >nagger tries to convince me his shit laptop will do a better work for reading
what's your favorite pastime, counting pixels on your shit monitor?
Bought a kindle paperwhite for 100 bucks a while back. It's cheap enough and I like looking at it. Lately I've switched to audiobooks though for multitasking.
thinking about getting one just so I can be less dependent on my pc/phone. but it's yet another screen gadget so I don't know... maybe I should start visiting my local library

I have bought and tried most known brands, I have spent thousands of dollars and they're all fucking crippled in unique ways that make them fundamentally useless.
>is it worth buying one to run KOReader on it?
Sure is, the reply chain has some seethe but is right about each device having its own set of drawbacks.
Get a device with a screen big enough for you, pageturn keys if you want, koreader support/good PDF stuff.
Yeah, there'll always be one thing that sucks because everyone has their own preferences but even a 6" shitdle can shine with koreader. If you read a lot of paperbacks and like the word to page count, get an 8" device or bigger.
most of them are android 8 to 10 stop fucking kidding yourself
>an ancient version of android
Why does that matter for reading ebooks? it's not like I plan on connecting it to the internet.
most of the non-chink ones try their damnest to prevent you from putting books on there over usb. if you have to use some convoluted method or jailbreak or ssh or usb debug your books onto your device then you have failed as a useful product.
>most of the non-chink ones try their damnest to prevent you from putting books on there over usb.
No, even Kindle allows it.
The only odd one out is Remarkable.
Some applications require a certain version of Android.
A lot of people seem to want Tachiyomi, which requires Android 6. Koreader needs Android 4.3.

only if A4 size
If you're only reading epubs, a 6" e-reader is great. Of course if you want to read pdfs, mangas or comics you will need a bigger one.
Not for manga because their software is ass, but for books hell yeah.
koreader works just fine for manga
Depends. It's worth it for me, but maybe you'll just prefer ipad like other normies.
Which one is that?
Avoid the GPU boox models. Far worse battery traded for higher refresh rate.
Boox Tab Ultra, the non color one.

Use einkbro as a browser. Might not be as crucial on the TUC due to its color and scrolling ability but it's still not bad to have.
Was about to say based for Wagashi, until I noticed you have the left right pages flipped, which is retarded
What? It's right-to-left on that screenshot.
The pages are misaligned. The one that's right should be on the left and the one that's left should be on the right. The white strips on the edge should be in the center where the paper version folds.
nta but personally doesn't trigger me as much as the white lines on the top and bottom
Not much you can do about those until e-ink produces sqrt(2):1 panels.

you can add a blank page after the cover when this happens
ignore me lmao, I'm too used to displaying a single page because my ereader is too small for 2 (main reason why I want a bigger one)
No need to. Manga uses fixed layout epub format that specifies which page goes left and which goes right.
>double page reading
wish I had one big enough to do that. my Sage's too small
what's the screen size for that?
10.3"
oh that's why 2 pages are readable. I'm looking for something that is lightweight and tankobon sized
Boox Tab X
>$1k for laggy ebook reader
Are you retarded
How exactly is it laggy?
sauce pls
Nigga, read.
Give the f title nagger
Not spoonfeeding you nagger, just search for the author lazy homosexual nagger pussy bitch
Fucking mean cunt bitch ass nigguh
"Low Level Mage Corrupted by a Lewd Crest"
holy shit and lmafo i was not expecting that when i clicked
NIGGA WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH YOUR DESK
If you read a lot of novels or linear progression books without much back and forth or charts. Hell yes. The portability and lack of eye strain is amazing. For comics, text books, or other chart or flip heavy mediums, its not ideal.
it has awful contrast ratios
If you do a lot of linear reading.
If your plan is to put textbooks on it, they're horrible to navigate, and don't zoom nicely into diagrams you might want to enlarge. Get a tablet instead if that.
This would be a lot better it you cut the nagger out.
Anyways, sauce on the girl?
Girl?
That's the same person; it's just a before and after.
The dude fell on hard times; can't even drive anymore.
I want the nagger shagging the asiatic girl
Which of the following are you?:
Literal homosexual, cuck, kike, nagger
Likely asian
> they're horrible to navigate, and don't zoom nicely into diagrams you might want to enlarge
not a problem on boox tab ultra, where at least they don't make them 1 use case meme appliance
Buy a used one for 25 bucks.

Any good e readers with android app support? I'm too lazy to import manga.
Boox's
i fell for the ereader meme, its not worth it. im trying to sell it, so far without luck
how would you read books before heading to bed without an ereader?
either with a small, cheap, decent tablet or just printed (there are some books that are worth having printed, mainly technical ones)
Are you really unaware that actual books exist?
on my laptop
yes I read books on my kobo, it runs linux because freedom. It's comfy to read on bed. Pirate all books like a chad.
I have an old as shit kindle, paid 100€ back in 2007 i think, it has buttons.

I’ve a very old kindle with a keyboard on it, well into its second decade now
It’s great for reading novels and text only non fiction
Horrible for reference works or any graphics
Battery life is getting poor now after all these years, might buy a new fancy kindle or just replace the battery if I can find one
my kindle spontaneously generated 2 dead pixels so dont rely on battery change to perfectly refresh the unit
Had one but it was a hassle.
Now I have a giant S8 ultra and would not go back.
The only thing that sucks is battery life but it turns out it doesn't matter to me.

No especially not with astigmatism
what's the best font and why is it baskerville?
Garamond, set with Tex, just looks so nice vms4n
Sad you missed the Woot Kindle Paperwhite deal for $55.

andrew tate is a low iq black person, so of course he has this mindset. pretty much all black people(with the exception of a few) have this mindset
It depends IMHO... If you wanna study, they suck. Now if all you want is to read novels or other entertainment books, then it's really good.

Why do people still equate e-readers with tiny, weak Kindles?
buy a 13-14" lenovo yoga or equivalent

Way to show that you've never worked with an e-reader.
how long does the last frame on screen last after the device fully loses power?
>not Onyx Boox Kaleido 3-based (based) Note Air 3/Tab Ultra
OP, it's justified, but definitely not for such brainlets as you, who use such shit as the one in your OP-pic. Learn to choose wisely.

Books - Boox reader from a couple years back.
Manga - iPad Mini
For travel I only bring my iPad though. Currently reading Red River Seven.
