My dad told me that in his high school in the early ’80s whether you smoked or not pretty much determined who you hung out with and whether you were being invited to parties and ultimately what your social life as a high schooler would be like. If you smoked, you’d hang around with other kids who smoked and those were the cool kids who were partying and drinking and (I presume) getting laid. If you didn’t smoke, you could choose between the chess club and mathletes.
