      – Casio

Making a list of brands is pointless, they all have different models of varying inherent "value". Some brands are consistently low-vallue and some are consistently above average.

Timex suck big time at everything they make, Casio are god-tier at every level.

Out of your list tissot and hamilton are just zombie brands of the swatch group meant to sell to normies that recognize the name at the mall, a mass market brand with nothing to show for itself.

Hamilton was the lowest bidder on some govt contract in early 1940’s ? cool story bro.

I have a Tutima Glashutte from the 1940s, I did contact the factory that originally made it. But they wanted €2000 just to look at it. No fixing included in the price or anything.

The point is that watches are a waste of money, heck spare parts and service, wear it until it works.
Get something that you like and wear it to show your style off, not to impress anybody, because those people aren’t worth it.[
Raketa(pre-privatisation) has some genuinely good designs, same for Luch today.

I would have been so pissed off. No local watchmakers wanted to deal with it. Until I found a old retired guy who got it working again. It still needs a bit of a refresh tho. €2000 is ridiculous though.

It is a cheap luftwaffe watch made from nickled brass. It is kinda rare because the build quality was awful so it broke easily, but it wasn’t like a luxury timepiece. Incredible that they want €2k just to look at it.

    Definitely Seiko and Casio.

You can get some Christopher Ward watches for under $1000. They often have fun watches.

Stranton and signum watches are microbrands with tons of fun watches under $1000. Lots of cool dials made from meteorite and other interesting materials (like in the picture). And lots of fun motor sport themed watches.

    • Anonymous says:

I’d rather scarf down a big wet bucket of shit than pay nearly $1000 for a hecking Christopher Ward. Honestly have more disdain for that brand than cheap Chinese trash. No identity whatsoever.

Speaking of microbrands under $1000. I always loved Lorier, especially their Falcon 2, but everything they make is limited edition so I didn’t get the green one I wanted so much.

They have some very nice new dress watches called Zephyr though. With a nice guilloche pattern on the face. Good looking mechanical watches.

I also like Autodromo although most of their watches are just above $1000.

    • Anonymous says:

Thanks for the heads up on Lorier. Holding out for one of the Zephyrs when they come out in October. Big debate on whether or not to get black or white.

      • Anonymous says:

I like Lorier, I believe it is run by a married couple. Literally a mom-and-pop thing. Your local mom-and-pop watchmaker. But yeah, they have a nice sense of the aesthetic and very good price. It is automatic watches with so-called "off the shelf" movements, but that is a good thing. Those movements are well known, functions well and super easy to get parts so servicing this thing is going to be a breeze.

I like both the white and black equally. I would probably choose the white, I imagine it is easier to read and I wouldn’t necessarily have a black suit so it wouldn’t match. But I would always have a white shirt in a formal occasion.

I think it’s something else. Back when the /tip and /sprezz threads where strong there was a troll who created menswear related questions as slider threads all the time. Nowadays those are gone, but watch related threads are all over the catalog. Coincidence?

    • Anonymous says:

because I’m better than everyone else.

He might be a tourist and don’t know we have a watch thread

I’m not a tourist, I’m your father. now, show me some respect, son.

I like sports watch like picrel. if I bought a sports casio, they actually look pretty cool, nice features and they’re not very expensive, but I think for e.g. tissot has a better name than casio. probably not better make, but "what you’re wearing?"
      "casio"
      "tissot"
tissot sounds better and it’s swiss.
      I’m very divided, I don’t know.

People will not notice your watches unless you have some strange ones, buy a watch for yourself
People will notice your general dress sense, not a small band on your wrist

      • Anonymous says:

grow some balls anon, when do you even get asked about your watch ?
You should buy and wear a watch for your own satisfaction, because you know it’s made of Titanium, because it’s accurate, because it’s got interesting features, because YOU like it.

        • Anonymous says:

that’s true. I used to wear a Tomy, so I’m not even sure what’s the problem in casio, I guess I’m stupid. I like this one for e.g. pretty cheap too

      >Out of your list tissot and hamilton are just zombie brands of the swatch group meant to sell to normies that recognize the name at the mall, a mass market brand with nothing to show for itself.

You must be joking, there are fantastic reasonably priced Tissot. Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 for example, fantastic watch. Or the Tissot PRX. Super nice professional and comfortable watches with all sorts of creature comforts and finishing that makes it well worth it.

It is also a swiss brand with heritage

      • Anonymous says:

Did you even look and handled those in person ? It’s pretty poor, i’d rather get a cerina from jomashop at a third of the price. The PRX is terrybly top-heavy and uncomfortable. Also, what is heritage worth to you ? What is it even doing for you ? Heritage matter at the low end, the top products, for the mass market jusk that you mentionned it’s meaningless, it raise the price for no tangible value.

        • Anonymous says:

The PRX is a good-looking watch and it has a 1970s look that I like. I am not able to notice any real significant weight differences between watches, that might be an issue for some people who are sensitive for a few grams here and there.

The watch isn’t very heavy. But always a good idea to try out the watch if possible and Tissot is ideal for that since it is sold in lots of places.

      • Anonymous says:

        >It is also a swiss brand with heritage
Owned by chinks and manufactured in chinkland … like a lot of "swiss" brands
Made in Swiss is a joke and has been for a while
Don’t believe it? Check it yourself

      • Anonymous says:

Is this a known issue or are you making shit up? I’ve had mine a year or so and it’s working flawlessly.

        • Anonymous says:

Where the heck are you going to service it? Where your watchmaker is going to source parts? And are you going to pay the $250 service fee? A chronograph is a major complication even if it doesn’t appear as such. A chinese chronograph is closer to a chinese tourbillon than to a seiko 5. I don’t like the idea of swapping movements, that way disposable automatics are worse than a quartz.

The cheapest reliable and well proportioned mechanical chronograph is unironically a hamilton intramatic chrono.

The other options are used(I’m not playing that game) and looking for a small brand chronograph based on a Valjoux 7750 which are fairly common for watchmakers to service.

I don’t like buying watches for later bin them, thats why I already leaved the affordable game.

          Currently saving for a breitling.

But I’m not a snob, that’s my opinion and I respect yours. Enjoy your watch.

          • Anonymous says:

You’re right, but the parts should be easily sourced the ST19 is readily available. I guess it comes down to are you willing to pay for a service 1.5x the price of the watch. I’ll admit I never really thought about servicing, the watch was cheap so I’d probably sell this one for parts and buy a new one when the time comes.

    Casio
Seiko if you want more elegant look even though Casio already got you covered
    the rest are irrelevant copes

  5. Anonymous says:

Should I buy it in black version?

I tried this blue one the shop had, and I love it but glass has some weird glare.

Another option is Certina diver automatic

I think it’s more about specific models and lines than whole brands. I’ve heard about alignment issues on budget Timex, Seiko, and Citizen quartz watches, but some of the more expensive ones are supposed to have better quality control and should not have such issues.
One such example would be the Bulova Precisionist line, it has an interesting quirk (sweeping seconds hand quartz) and some decent designs.

i’m gonna buy a seiko or something i don’t care

Cosc isn’t always better than top grade movements. It’s also a certification of the movement alone, not cased and dressed. Sinn does no bother with cosc but still use top grade mvt, it’s the same thing without paying for the 3rd party cert.

  9. Anonymous says:

was looking at Ball watches, any thoughts? I really like the fireman enterprise and marvel light, but their older styles are pretty good too (pic related). plus I am a sucker for tritium

  10. Anonymous says:

A used Sinn 556 or 104 in good condition is probably the best you can do under $1000. Sinn ruined ~$1000 watches for me because the quality is so much better than anything else in that range. Just don’t be an idiot and pay $3000 for a Sinn because it’s filled with gas or made out of melted down iron crosses or some shit. Honestly the Chad move would be to just buy a $200 Seiko or save for a real luxury watch.
