I think it's funny that the most interesting set of ideas put together to date is so wildly foreign to lay minds. I wonder what that says about our education systems.

Watch Chad Haag’s Phenomenology of Spirit videos and watch Gregory Sadler’s Half Hour Hegel videos (only the passages that give you particular trouble). Then just pick our excerpts from Frederick Beiser’s Hegel and Charles Taylor’s Hegel and you should be set. It’s not that bad if you understand Hegel’s thought within the larger system.

Schopenhauer demolished Hegel's claptrap nonsense with The World as Will and Representation. Read Hegel, but know that Schopenhauer is streets ahead of Hegel.
      It's not even close.
"It is only the individual, not the human race that has a real and immediate unity of consciousness, and so the unity of the life of the human race is a mere fiction. Moreover, just as it is only the species that are real in nature while genera are mere abstractions, it is the same in the human race: only the individuals and their life courses are real, while peoples and the lives of peoples are mere abstractions."

        >Just as it is only the species that are real in nature while genera are mere abstractions
        >only the individuals and their life courses are real

So species are real but yet the human race (our species) is a "mere abstraction"? Wow this only convinced me to read Hegel

I only used the word "race" because he did in that paragraph. Moreover, this has little to do with the argument Schop is making in that section. Are you intentionally being ridiculous or is this the end result of reading too many homosexual authors?

Looks like Hegel rotted your brain and made you into an idiot.

You still haven't addressed the fact that true history is unknowable, the fact that individual consciousness precludes a unity of history, and the fact that people aren't the same. Hegel was an idiot LOL

“Boundless compassion for all living beings is the surest and most certain guarantee of pure moral conduct, and needs no casuistry. Whoever is filled with it will assuredly injure no one, do harm to no one, encroach on no man's rights; he will rather have regard for every one, forgive every one, help every one as far as he can, and all his actions will bear the stamp of justice and loving-kindness.”
            - Schopenhauer, The Basis of Morality
At least read a book before you go mouthing off about philosophers you don't understand.

This has nothing to do with him being a nihilist or not. Did you read Schopenhauer? Every defense in this thread is off topic and unrelated

How did he demolish him? He just makes a claim that there is no unity of consciousness of the human race. It's funny you post an excerpt in your picrel talking about people taking appearance for essence, when you seem to be working at the same level with this post. Schopenhauer appears to dunk on Hegel, but what is the essence of his argument? Where is it?

Are you claiming that there IS a unity of consciousness in the human race? This is a big development.

No, I didn't say I believed that myself. I just don't see how Schopenhauer "demolished" the idea.

Funny because everytime they found some wild raised kid they were mentally moronic beasts with little to no conscience. If only the individuals and their life courses were real they wouldnt have the necessity of a race

Not a bad argument, but Schopenhauer's malding, seething, and coping at Hegel's phenomenal (pun intended) success will never not make me laugh. Hegel's lectures were standing-room only, he was apparently hypnotic, mesmerizing in the classroom. Schopenhauer's lectures were empty.

what is the best second source for understanding this? Also how do you get people to give you the benefit of the doubt to read your work. If I did not hear from people that Hegel was good and just picked this up I would not have given it a chance.

Kojeve. Get his lectures. To prepare for the book, he did nothing but read and re read Hegel's Phenomenology for six years.

      Six. Years.

Kojeve’s reading of Hegel is awful and caused every major thinker of the 20th century to misunderstand Hegel on a fundamental level.

I'm starting with Kojeve's lectures (translated by Nichols and introduction by Allan Bloom, iirc). I'm 10 pages in and it's fricking incredible. Hegel is extremely smart.

DONT DO IT OP YOU ARE NOT READY
You should start with the lectures first to get a handle on things first
