I'm done with Windows

>Be me
>Wingay for decades
>Use Windows 10
>Despite privacy problems and general ugly design, I still use it as its not completely unusable
>Get new computer with Windows 11 installed on it
>"I've heard its mediocre, but it can't be that bad right?"
>Instantly get forced to sign up to Microsoft
>Try to skip it, but I can't
>Make burner account to get it to shut up
>OS finally starts up
>Fricking ugly ass programs and apps everywhere, even worse than 10
>Design is uglier than 10, and is SLOWER than 10
>"Frick this shit"
>Install a lightweight Linux distro, which hasn't given me any problems

Bros, I think I'm finally a permanent Lincuck. Even though Windows got worse with each version, I never thought it would come to this? Is there any extra shit I should know about Linux?

Yes, many times. However I never got the hand of it like a tard, so I always went crawling back to Windows eventually. I know the general gist of it though, so its fine

Mint is usually a solid choice, will help you ease back into the Linux scene while still being familiar-feeling to the general windows DE layout. If you don't like Mint, Xbuntu (the Xfce spin of Ubuntu) works well.
Personally, I find Xfce or Cinnamon to be the best if you are looking to stay away from Gnome. Don't get me wrong, I like gnome - but it does take a bit of getting used to.

Really, most mainstream distros are fine for general use, and many will come with a choice of DEs (Xfce, KDE, Gnome, etc.) I find most of the disagreement over distros really comes down to a preferred DE.

Mint. Esp if you're coming from windows. Pop OS is another solid choice (especially if you play vidya).

Steam has also made massive improvements in windows game compatibility thanks to their steam handhold console. You can turn on beta settings in steam to enable windows "emulator" or whatever the frick it's called.

nvidia open sourced their drivers you know that right?

            Anonymous

No they didn't. Noveau is reverse engineered with limited input from nvidia. If you're talking about the new kernel drivers, all they do is provisioning for the same proprietary binary blob that the current drivers use. It's a better approach than the current one, but it doesn't solve the issue.

            >That’s all great news, but there are a few reasons to temper your excitement. Hector Martin, the main developer for Asahi Linux, shared in a series of tweets that much of the important graphics code isn’t actually open-source. Nvidia appears to have moved much of its proprietary code into the firmware on its graphics cards, which the open-source code interacts with — a bit like the Intel Management Engine on Intel CPUs.
It literally offloads the graphics stack to other proprietary blobs.

Linux is great if your setup is just a simple AMD laptop used for web browsing. Anything more complex and you encounter issues that you realize will never be solved, and they exist in all DEs.

    >menu position problem in qt wayland on multi-monitors with different scaling https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-85297 (fixed in qt6, KDE and most apps use qt5)
    >blurry text in GTK 4 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/3787 "what makes you think sharpness is a metric?"
    >kde search doesn't work in symlinked directories https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=447119
    >gnome has no thumbnails in the file picker
    >gnome has a Black personlicious tablet UI
    >no HDR support unless you use Android
    >bluetooth randomly doesn't work depending on the device
    +many other DE specific stuff

I tried really hard to stick with Linux, tried multiple DEs and even sway but I still can't get around the qt and gtk problems. Then I went back to windows 10 ltsc. suddenly font rendering works and is the best, thumbnails work, HDR works, menus on multi-monitors work, search on symlinked directories works and bluetooth works.

the multi-monitor menu issue is on qt apps on wayland with monitors with different scaling, and you probably use x11. Also you've never run a search in symlinked directories on KDE and you've never used GTK4
you have a much simpler setup and use case, why did you even reply to me?

If you ever notice Windows being clunky, remember, it was made with a "time-to-market" approach, and the rest of the system is built on that shaky foundation for three decades.
Even if Microsoft rewrites Windows from scratch, they will fall into the same patterns people expect. People WILL demand a registry. People WILL expect all executables to live in a path with a space in the name. People WILL demand that Explorer functions in the same way.
There is no way out of this.

But cause it's literally hostile to the user. I can _feel_ it. Disabling stuff you don't want like web results in start, web this, web that is pain. An option to create a local account is getting hidden deeper with every update. Enabling meaningful things, installing codecs, using store - more pain. Everything is illogical, half-assed, and anti-human.

Windows is strange. you have to periodically do a clean install, otherwise it starts fricking up.

I swear to god Microsoft and CPU/GPU manufacturers have formed a syndicate. A few years ago my mom got me a laptop with a 2 core 3Ghz AMD A9 CPU for highschool. Don't get me wrong, it was always shit. But I booted it up now after around 2 years and it is absolutely crawling. I updated the OS, the drivers, everything. I even reinstalled windows. Still snail slow. Keep in mind it was running Win10 back in highschool. The OS has just become that bloated. I get around 90% CPU usage just on the startup page.

yeah, same. I have a Thinkpad p51s. Really snappy on arch, slow to a crawl on windows 10.

OP if you want something useable ie does not break constantly your going to want to ho with one of the Stable distorbutions Fedora, OpenSuSE, or a Ubuntu flavor. Don't listen to any of the meme advice you will get here

    t Linux user sense 1998

And before any of you buttholes make any comments I hold a stable Job, and finished a University degree Using Linux. Linux is 100% usable if you avoid meme shit. Sadly these days you can't get a decent office package for Linux these days (when went through uni. Corel still offered Word Perfect for linux)

Go with Arch or Manjaro. Literally the most popular on Steam.

You have only used Mandrake and shit like Mint, it shows. You don't know shit about linux.

It's Arch for absolute morons filtered by manual install. Such as you or OP.

That's not what Manjaro is, that's EndeavourOS. Stop recommending brazilian remix broken distros.

            >who knows GNU/Linux distro
You should be using Arch anyway, I will never understand people who use anything else and claim to know anything about computers.

        never used mandrake
i will admit to using redhat and SuSE

As far as caring I care about my computer working when I need it to computers are tools not lifestyles or part of your identity

    >Instantly get forced to sign up to Microsoft
    >Try to skip it, but I can't
    >Make burner account to get it to shut up
You can literally skip it by putting in wrong credentials and then pressing back, it defaults to local account creation, even in Windows 11 Home.
    >Fricking ugly ass programs and app everywhere, even worse than 10
Well, yeah, but most aren't actually installed, they're just pinned to Start to get you to install them. Just as shit though I agree.
    >Design is uglier than 10
Complete personal preference, I much prefer 11
    >SLOWER than 10
Exactly the same performance on my machine as 10 was
I use both Linux and Windows, but your complaints in this post are fricking dumb.

Windows 11 is really bad, I reluctantly upgraded to Windows 10 when 7 reached EoL, but I used 11 on my new laptop for 2 weeks and I couldn't do it anymore, had to downgrade it to 10.

I went through the same process, I was using for years Windows on my main PC, but I had Arch linux on my laptop, and finally the time came, I couldn't take it anymore and just bought another ssd to install Linux on my main PC, I still have windows there, but I never start it.

Well linux mint cinamon is basically the classic windows user interface.
    > Is there any extra shit I should know about Linux?
If one of your application crash, bug, or stutter, don't hesitate to install the flatpak version, or the appimage.
.deb, then flatpak (or perhaps snap), if it bugs, then appimage.
Usually one of these will work fine.

The only things that have been holding me back from uninstalling it entirely are my music production hobby and occasional interest in gaming, but I just don't care anymore. I will do whatever it takes to get away from Windows and any other proprietary software that isn't absolutely necessary. I'm so sick of these Silicon Valley homosexuals ruining everything.
