I like the way old religions work better than the new all consuming Abrahamic ones. India is the last major holdout. I wish we could have known in detail what Europeans contributed to religious thought but no. Not saying Abrahamic religions are bad but it just sucks that barely anyone wrote anything down about European religion beyond the Greeks and Romans.

Druids were forbidden to write their wisdom down. It's a real shame

Druids were homosexual hippies. That was why they were conquered by the romans.

                Not him but I'll elaborate.
The druids were the Gestapo or NKVD of the Celtic world. They controled every aspect of Celtic society, be it spiritual, religious, judicial, historical, medical and political. If you pissed on an oak tree or called a druid a dumb senile geezer, they had all the right to sentence your cock to be cut off for disrespect simply because they had the power to do whatever the fuck they wanted.

Isn't that how most of the ancient world was run? By one ruler? What if they had some really good wisdom that we will never know?

                >By one ruler?
Druids weren't rulers, they were the backbone of celtic society, they were more like really powerful oligarch-priests more than anything. Even the most powerful Celtic kings couldn't disrespect the druids because their influence could be felt in every aspect of society and they were the voices of the gods and were the only ones allowed to amass knowledge.
                >Isn't that how most of the ancient world was run?
Sort of. Even in the ancient world the power of rulers was kept in check by their vassals, generals, the common folk, and in the case of Rome, senators.
                >What if they had some really good wisdom that we will never know?
Whatever wisdom they had couldn't have been much different from what the Romans and other peoples of Europe had, I doubt the druids really knew the secrets of the Universe or anything like that.

I'll save this thread some time maybe. The highest culture and mystical knowledge came out of the city-states on the Mediterranean islands. Those were the least worst places to live because civic codes were built in from the start, and even if you were a slave it was great weather most of the time and wine was the essentially the basis of their civilizations.

“I begin to sing the honored goddess, Pallas Athena,
The grey-eyed, very-clever one with a relentless heart,
A city-defending, revered and courageous maiden
Tritogeneia, whom counselor Zeus himself gave birth to
from his sacred head, already holding her weapons,
all gold and shining. Then awe took all the immortals
who looked on. And she rose from the immortal head
of aegis-bearing Zeus immediately in front of them
shaking her sharp spear. And great Olympos shook
terribly beneath the fury of the grey-eyed goddess
as the ground echoed frightfully around. Even the sea
was churned up with its dark waves and the brine seized
suddenly. The glorious son of Hyperion brought his
swift-footed steeds to rest for a long time until
the maiden Pallas Athena took the divine weapons
from her immortal shoulders. And counselor Zeus laughed.
Hail to you, then, child of aegis-bearing Zeus.
And I will also praise you with yet another song still.”

Unfortunately it's just the principle of higher order organization at work.

Religion began in the family. Each family had their own deity.

Then powerful families emerged, and formed alliances to forge early nation-states. They combined their household deities to form the polytheist pantheon.

Nation-states coalesced to form empires, and religion needed to be seamlessly transmittable across former boundaries with unified moral codes. Written holy books and monotheism emerge.
