I just came back from vacation in Mexico City and noticed that 90% Uber cars I got into had a manual transmission. Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
I accidentally posted this question in LULZ but meant to make the thread here.

Your picture basically tells you why. The US is the perfect storm of factors to eliminate manual cars.
>Most people don't like driving
>Most people are forced to drive
>Manual in morning traffic is objectively worse
>People have enough money to pay more for an auto which makes them cheaper over time.
Also, they're fat and can barely move their feet
>Manual in morning traffic is objectively worse
Simply start at 7am. Get overtime and get to blast down B roads.
i have multiple routes to work including 1 highway run, for those mornings when i just gotta go fast
Are Mexico and Europe the same as the US, where every major financial decision is decided, or at least heavily influenced by a boss lady who literally doesn't know how to drive stick?
>Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
It's cheaper.
Read no further than that.
Came here to post this
Also most Americans are lazy and stupid and want to just point the fucking car somewhere and step on the "go" pedal
>t. American
And more reliable
SPBP.Nobody really likes manuals here,we only use them because they are cheaper to purchase and maintain.
here in aus manuals were once the cheap option decades ago, but for anything fun, they command a premium now. supply and demand and all that
thats how it is in america too
Manual shitboxes are cheaper to make and sell, and remain on the road longer since automatic trannies tend to grenade or fail and cost too much to fix.
It’s not about people liking them, it’s just that they’re more durable and last longer, along with being the only car transmission in the country/area.
>Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
It's not. The graph of automatic popularity is 1:1 with the first world-ness of the country. America, Canada, Australia, and Japan are overwhelmingly automatic. China, South Korea, most of Europe is either mostly automatic or very nearly there. The only countries with manuals are dirtpoor shitholes like Mexico, South America, Africa, places where people work all day to buy a meal and the difference of $2000 on the asking price of an upgraded transmission is a lot.
automatics are cheaper in the UK because people don't like them, if you have 2 identical used cars but one is manual and one is automatic, the automatic will sell for less
what a backward ass country
I knew there was a reason I liked Brits.
But the automatic is more likely to fail, can't roll start, and most automatics have shitty performance. The average British car has a 1 - 2L engine. The good automatic transmissions come in cars that arent available with manual.
only more likely to fail if you drive a Nissan cvt or Ford dct. otherwise autos will go a lot longer with minimal, if any, maintenance compared to manual clutch replacement every 50-60k miles. an atf fluid change every 100k compared to two clutch replacements, for example
It's because the cars here tend to be fairly small engines. Small country, a long drive is like 150 miles plus and most cars have 2L engines or smaller so an automatic just feels like overkill for a little engine like that.
If I had to speculate, I think something to do with the amount of hills here also has an impact. Much easier to just jump into 1st or 2nd when you hit a hill.
Vast majority of cars above 3L are automatics and I think it's just the lack of cars with that displacement.
no they aren't
that only applies to enthusiast cars
you pay a premium for an auto car because they're rarer
asking price is not the selling price, people pay less for automatics, less people want them, they sell for less
Maybe if it's some rare enthusiast car but an automatic costs at least 500 pounds more than the same car but with a manual
>Maybe if it's some rare enthusiast car but an automatic costs at least 500 pounds more than the same car but with a manual
nope, in the uk if you have 2 identical used cars but one is manual and one is automatic, the automatic will sell for less
> first world-ness
> America
>eurocels
>"mostly automatic"
80%+ of vehicles sold in EU are manual anon, autos fucking suck ass
When, in 2001? A large percentage of cars sold in the EU don't even have a manual option anymore.
The average Euro has the quality of life of a redneck in Alabama (poorest state in the union).
>The average Euro has the quality of life of a redneck in Alabama (poorest state in the union).
>implying euros have that much open space
In my shithole autos are so much more expensive that only rich people buy them, also you take your driver's license test on a manual, if you take it on an auto you get a limited license meant for retards and cripples
>if you take it on an auto you get a limited license meant for retards and cripples
that's hilarious given it makes no difference whatsoever
>Manual transmissions bamboozle a sufficient proportion of Americans to be considered an anti-theft device
>lol there's no difference in the competency required to operate an automatic or a manual
Doesn't add up, chief
>considered an anti-theft device
do you really think a nagger stealing your vehicle won't just grind gears?
>>lol there's no difference in the competency required to operate an automatic or a manual
>third pedal and shifting manually makes any sort of difference in driving acuity
it doesn't matter because you're benchracing anyway tbh
>you have to learn to drive all over again
maybe if you're retarded, learning to drive a manual takes about a day and once down it makes little difference in ability to drive versus a manual. did you forget what a stop sign means when you sit behind a manual or autotragic you fucking retard?
post stick or stfu
ok so i learn in an auto, get my license and my first car is a manual
how the fuck is that not a difference? you have to learn to drive all over again. The muscle memory of learning a manual is half the battle on getting your license.
>only rich people buy autos
>auto only licence is for retards
sour grapes and all that
>sour grapes
Everyone take their tests on manuals, even rich teen girls because the auto only license is for disabled people, how is that sour grapes?
Because for a very long time, automatic gearboxes were much more inefficient and came with a generous price premium and Europeans tend to be more willing to mildly inconvenience themselves to save a bunch of money, so most lower class cars were sold as manuals while automatics were mostly seen on premium cars. They've been becoming more common as the efficiency went up to the point of actually saving fuel compared to the manual gearbox, which also reduced the upcharge in a lot of countries due to how emission taxes work. It also helps that hybrid vehicles are nearly all automatics due to how the powertrain works.
90% of Ubers in America are Teslas
Wrong. It's an Accord or Camry.
>More control over the car
>Cheaper
>Lighter
>Fewer parts/simpler
>Less drivetrain and parasitic losses
>Easier to maintain
>More reliable
>Anti-theft
>Much more enjoyable
>Proper way of driving as driving is intended to be
Simple as. The only reason for autos is it acts like a crutch, useful for women and the disabled
Also autos cost thousands of dollars to rebuild or replace when they eventually shit the bed, buying used autos is like playing hot potato for that reason. Meanwhile, you can easily see the condition of a used manual car on a test drive because of the mechanical nature of manuals. But most people don't give a shit about driving so they don't care about any of that and good enough for A to B is good enough for them.
>Anti-theft
Imagine some thug breaking into your car only to realize its a manual and he can't steal it.
they just strip the clutch
yeah dont understand this, two cars stolen from me both manuals. my dad had his manual truck stolen, friend had his manual civic stolen. brother in law had his manual civic stolen.
ironically never knew someone who had an automatic stolen theyve all been manuals.
are you implying thieves have iphones
why are you posting stania retard
Automatic is a similar nany system as Apple products, while manual is Linux.
Maybe some non synchro'd dual range manual
Modern passenger car manual is Windows, it's nothing difficult or special
>More control over the car
Not in any relevant sense
>Cheaper
Poorfag
>Lighter
Barely
>Fewer parts/simpler
Okay? And a horse carriage has even less parts, that makes it better right?
>Less drivetrain and parasitic losses
Unless it's an automatic made in the last 15ish years
>Easier to maintain
The only maintenance you need to do in an auto is change the gearbox oil every couple of years
>More reliable
No
>Anti-theft
If you're outside of the US, no
>Much more enjoyable
Lol if you gearbox is what makes your car enjoyable maybe try not driving an old shitbox
>Proper way of driving as driving is intended to be
Says who? Your broke ass?
Seething wagie
It's cheaper, if they want a new car for Uber and want the cheapest one. They road the og Beatle till early 2000's they got the 90's Sentra till 2013 all in production.
>Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
Until recent years your only option was a slushbox or a manual.
Sluhboxes were very inefficient and no other country had life standards high enough where they could afford powerful engines and gas to run them.
They are slowly getting CVTs now for the same reason but manuals are ingrained in the culture.
>t. Yuropoor, my first car, 2001 mazda made same amount of power as picrel
That driver should wear shoes and also his posture is horrible and retarded just like his ugly feet
>Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
It's the cheapest option.
in most other places, you have to take your driving test on a manual. automatic licenses are for the disabled. also due to demand and ~~*economy of scale*~~ in america automatics are nearly identical cost wise to produce and are dare i say cheaper on the used market in many cases
>Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
>Simple
>Easy to operate
>Cheap to build
>Cheap to repair
>Lasts forever
It makes perfect sense for any country that has a much more limited supply chain, and a populace is just happy enough to not have to walk everywhere and doesn't need their car to suck them off while driving.
I think alot of americans would prefer manual, less electronics etc but in a big powerful car. Right now the only manual cars are shitboxes and "sports cars" theres not much you can use as a daily driver. Plus manuals are the same or lower quality than 30 years ago. They really need better gear ratios for actual driving around instead of some meets EPA test ratios that suck
Pretty sure Wranglers and the new Bronco come standard with, well, a standard tranny.
Jelly of Americans with high pay and cheap cars.
In Finland manuals are still majority. Due to average car being 15 to 20 years old. New cars are pretty much all automatic but very slow going. Poor country so not many new cars coming in.
>mutt discovers the world outside of the cringe bubble
well....
Americans can afford to throw cars away at 150k miles.
American kids buy up cars at 130k or more and drive the piss out of them, such that the engine grenades before 150k. Costs more to do a rebuild than to just buy a new shitbox.
Automatic transmissions are a luxury that costs extra. Only Americans can afford them.
>Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
Is it though?
Last time I was in germany every car the rental place had was automatic, as were most of the cars I saw people driving.
People outside the US are poor.
because
it just weeks
easier to maintain
cheaper to maintain
is cheaper
more mileage
and a majority of thin and straight people
werks**
what americans don't realise is driving a manual becomes an automatism really fast, you don't even have to think about switching gears and stuff it (ironically) becomes automatic
its kinda funny how guys in LULZ are so proud of something that literally every single person, from dumbest zoomers to women to grandmas, learns at 18.
Thats most of LULZ. LULZ is also full of no coders and barely knows of tech. Reinstalling Linux on their 100 dollar stinkpads over and over. Guess other boards are same.
Auto is for wage slaves stuck in traffic during wfh times lmao, manual is for fun after the wagies have finally gotten home and off the fucking road
Poverty. Poor people drive manual, wealthy people drive automatic. Euros spent a few decades trying to convince everyone the grapes were probably sour anyway, but over the last 10-15 years they've caught up to the US and now autos outsell manuals there too.
manual cars are objectively cheaper and in most countries affording the luxury (yes seriously) of n automatic car is out of most of their price range. Most of the planet is several times poorer than that US
They are cheap, easy to maintain, last much longer, and they are fun to drive. I also live in a mountainous area so having the ability to go from 5th to 3rd while overtaking/cornering on a steep incline is important.
Because Americans just throw things in the garbage when they break. The cost to replace and maintain a manual transmission is typically lower. Maybe that's slowly changing, but in the past an automatic has typically been a ticking time bomb whereas the average manual was built to last with minimal maintenance (maybe a clutch every 150 to 200k miles). And if the whole transmission grenaded, replacing a manual is cheaper than an automatic. But Americans just throw things in the garbage so might as well get the automatic because you know you won't end up ever changing the tranny anyways
>Cheaper
>Easier to maintain
>Cheaper to fix
>Harder to break
>Better MPG
Automatics are for women, normal people can deal with manual
its just you amerimutts are so dumb you cant handle driving a stick
Who the fuck cares what this poop skin thinks, who gives a fuck how an altima/charger debt payer prefers to drive?
Because we are all poor lol!
Also I like manual the most.
t.europoor
you're a fat american
Manual transmission is cheap, hence poor countries like in South America and Europe have 80% manual cars
which part of europe? europe is a continent, it has poor countries and rich countries, all the cars i see on the road are no less than about 3 years old, if everyone was so poor they wouldn't be be buying a new car every 3 years
I've lived in Germany, UK and Italy and manuals are very common. When you buy a new car, an automatic transmission costs a couple thousands more.
