I just came back from vacation in Mexico City and noticed that 90% Uber cars I got into had a manual transmission. Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??

I accidentally posted this question in LULZ but meant to make the thread here.

Your picture basically tells you why. The US is the perfect storm of factors to eliminate manual cars.
    >Most people don't like driving
    >Most people are forced to drive
    >Manual in morning traffic is objectively worse
    >People have enough money to pay more for an auto which makes them cheaper over time.

Manual shitboxes are cheaper to make and sell, and remain on the road longer since automatic trannies tend to grenade or fail and cost too much to fix.
It’s not about people liking them, it’s just that they’re more durable and last longer, along with being the only car transmission in the country/area.

    >Why is manual trans still so popular outside the US??
It's not. The graph of automatic popularity is 1:1 with the first world-ness of the country. America, Canada, Australia, and Japan are overwhelmingly automatic. China, South Korea, most of Europe is either mostly automatic or very nearly there. The only countries with manuals are dirtpoor shitholes like Mexico, South America, Africa, places where people work all day to buy a meal and the difference of $2000 on the asking price of an upgraded transmission is a lot.

automatics are cheaper in the UK because people don't like them, if you have 2 identical used cars but one is manual and one is automatic, the automatic will sell for less

But the automatic is more likely to fail, can't roll start, and most automatics have shitty performance. The average British car has a 1 - 2L engine. The good automatic transmissions come in cars that arent available with manual.

          Anonymous

only more likely to fail if you drive a Nissan cvt or Ford dct. otherwise autos will go a lot longer with minimal, if any, maintenance compared to manual clutch replacement every 50-60k miles. an atf fluid change every 100k compared to two clutch replacements, for example

        Anonymous

It's because the cars here tend to be fairly small engines. Small country, a long drive is like 150 miles plus and most cars have 2L engines or smaller so an automatic just feels like overkill for a little engine like that.
If I had to speculate, I think something to do with the amount of hills here also has an impact. Much easier to just jump into 1st or 2nd when you hit a hill.
Vast majority of cars above 3L are automatics and I think it's just the lack of cars with that displacement.

        no they aren't
that only applies to enthusiast cars

asking price is not the selling price, people pay less for automatics, less people want them, they sell for less

Maybe if it's some rare enthusiast car but an automatic costs at least 500 pounds more than the same car but with a manual

Because for a very long time, automatic gearboxes were much more inefficient and came with a generous price premium and Europeans tend to be more willing to mildly inconvenience themselves to save a bunch of money, so most lower class cars were sold as manuals while automatics were mostly seen on premium cars. They've been becoming more common as the efficiency went up to the point of actually saving fuel compared to the manual gearbox, which also reduced the upcharge in a lot of countries due to how emission taxes work. It also helps that hybrid vehicles are nearly all automatics due to how the powertrain works.

Simple as. The only reason for autos is it acts like a crutch, useful for women and the disabled

Also autos cost thousands of dollars to rebuild or replace when they eventually shit the bed, buying used autos is like playing hot potato for that reason. Meanwhile, you can easily see the condition of a used manual car on a test drive because of the mechanical nature of manuals. But most people don't give a shit about driving so they don't care about any of that and good enough for A to B is good enough for them.

Until recent years your only option was a slushbox or a manual.
Sluhboxes were very inefficient and no other country had life standards high enough where they could afford powerful engines and gas to run them.
They are slowly getting CVTs now for the same reason but manuals are ingrained in the culture.

I think alot of americans would prefer manual, less electronics etc but in a big powerful car. Right now the only manual cars are shitboxes and "sports cars" theres not much you can use as a daily driver. Plus manuals are the same or lower quality than 30 years ago. They really need better gear ratios for actual driving around instead of some meets EPA test ratios that suck

They are cheap, easy to maintain, last much longer, and they are fun to drive. I also live in a mountainous area so having the ability to go from 5th to 3rd while overtaking/cornering on a steep incline is important.

  27. 2 weeks ago

Because Americans just throw things in the garbage when they break. The cost to replace and maintain a manual transmission is typically lower. Maybe that's slowly changing, but in the past an automatic has typically been a ticking time bomb whereas the average manual was built to last with minimal maintenance (maybe a clutch every 150 to 200k miles). And if the whole transmission grenaded, replacing a manual is cheaper than an automatic. But Americans just throw things in the garbage so might as well get the automatic because you know you won't end up ever changing the tranny anyways
