I have a 2 TB Western Digital black on my Windows 10 PC. It spins up and down very often irrespective of use. How can I reduce the sickening grinding noise it makes when it spins down? afaik it's normal, works like a charm and nothing's wrong with it, but the sound really bothers me. It's mounted sideways but supposedly it doesn't matter for this drive, according to the manufacturer. If I can't stop it spinning up and down so often, what can I do to reduce the noise?
Throw it away
you need to ventilate it, just open it up
How are we suppose to help you with a clear software question when you don't tell us what software you use
It's been doing that ever since I first got the computer put together, so it's just default Windows 10 behavior
turn off the aggressive default power saving. its like 5 minutes spindown by default
Thanks, that seems to have worked.
I already use a debloated and despywared hacked version of Win10 a friend gave me, is switching to AME worth the hassle? I don't even know the most logical efficient way to do that (w.r.t. reinstalling programs etc.) I'm learning Linux on a different computer right now.
The thing is that I'm running Windows 10 on an SSD and have the HDD installed as well, but it grinds even when the SSD isn't in use, so it could be like what
is saying.
AME is the only usable windows 10, coming from a linux user myself.
Put it in a box.
stop it from spinning down, duh
That's the windows defender scanning process probably, install windows 10 ame or switch to linux.
Get an ssd
oil it up
>2TB HDD
god what's the point. I have a bunch of 500GB-2TB HDDs not plugged into anything, just being backups since there's no real use for them. You are just better off making that drive a backup and putting a 2TB SSD in its place even a sata SSD.
The best way to reduce to noise? Unplug it
Agreed but for a different reason. 2TB is basically nothing. They should be looking at 10tb minimum. Hell my primary hard drive is 20tb.
irregardless isn't a word
>buying a literal blacked drive
post soiface
>I can't stop it spinning up and down so often
you can: stop using windows
