I'd suggest starting at the beginning. You'll find that once jazz was music made by humans for other humans to enjoy.

      terrible advice
people like what hits close to home better, listening to real old stuff will scare newcomers

is all the white dixieland stuff completely devoid of funk?

        Anonymous

Yeh, you don't need to bother with white dixieland groups when there's the real deal: Jelly Roll, Satchmo, Sidney Bechet etc.

There were some good white swing bands though: Bob Crosby, Woody Herman

        some of it is good
        bix, jack teagarden, red norvo

This list is just a random bunch of unrelated shit all thrown together simply because those albums happened to catch (you)r attention. Essentials my ass.

I've already listened to them and that's why I'm telling you they're not essentials.

Okay. Post what you've rated all of them then.
              >that's why I'm telling you they're not essentials.
You're telling me albums like Portrait, In a Silent Way, Ascension, Black Saint, Heavy Weather, and Lanquidity aren't essentials? How? They're some of the biggest in their genre.

This is jazz-funk. If you mean jazz in general then I'd suggest you to think of it as a buzzword. Like buzzwords on LULZ, It doesn't mean anything, only indicates that the word comes from a certain culture. With jazz it is mostly the same - take 10 different albums and they won't sound alike, only the culture of playing will be similar (e.g. letting other band members solo), specific harmonic development (that mostly blacks employed) and possibly the production (jazz musicians in the 50-60s rarely had the last word on the way the music shaped in the studio mixing), depending on the time of release. So my point is, it's probably easier to judge the album by the cover rather than by the supposed genre. Just try to find something you like and go from there.

that's because naggers are retarded and just created a bastardized version of what whites invented in the first place. go listen to swing shit from the 20s it's much better and doesn't insist upon itself like all jazz post-1960

to get jazz you need to be able to write your own jams in real time in your head and join in the freeform, its like air guitar for intellectuals.

it's pretentious self-indulgent wank that people only listen to in an attempt to make those around them believe they have superior taste. it is esentially an accident waiting to happen, they're playing a song but they're playing it wrong. the audience thinks it's an artform.

Kek, this. It's always like that. When one creates a separate thread about how they like some album, everyone will them it's shit. But when casually mentioned in a thread not related to the said album, it will receive a praise.

Neither does LULZ. As you can see in this thread this board is unable to go beyond basic fusion. Also this

I'm sorry but I have a triple doctorate in jazz and an NEA grant, you don't know what you are talking about.

you have to start by enjoying it as background music, not really paying attention, just appreciate the vibe it creates. then over the years as it becomes more familiar and you acclimate it will start to really resonate and genuinely emotionally engage you.

I only ever got into Jazz because of the drums, Jazz fusion sucks ass tbh, Just listen to bebop and post-bop. Some avant-garde stuff is good too, especially Sun Ra, and cool jazz is good for background. Only experts pay close attention to jazz, just let it set the mood instead.

These are some of my favorites

Miles Davis is considered a great starting point if you want to get into jazz. Kind of Blue isn't a bad place to start

    What genres/bands do you like?

I think there was a period where jazz was just trying to be shit on purpose because they were bored or something. Kind of like post-punk. Don't listen to that. You gotta avoid any sort of Fusion, Funk, Modal Jazz, Free Jazz, Bebop.
Maybe like better to go Big Band, Swing, or Hard Bop.
