I never heard anyone use those words to describe it and I still don't know what they mean but I like it because it's fun to sing along to when drunk

It's fun to sing sober too. I've sung it in the car on road trips before, trying to keep up with Jeff is challenging.

I remember when it clicked for me I noticed the energy, the rhythm, the flow. It's a great performance with simple, interesting instruments that was produced well. The weird, personal lyrics are kind of universally unsettling

    Art school dropout here
went to a famous NY college
First day went to a studio workshop
girls in flannel, sit cross legged sucking each off, "Nice work" "Oh you're so good", while NMH album played. Instructor mentioned how this album changed her life. Intense emotions containment space... precisely where it belongs. Proceeded to meet many art students NMH preferred taste, favorite album.

I only like this album because it’s catchy, I have no idea what the lyrics mean and I don’t care. But people who won’t shut up about how much they love it or how much they hate it are annoying and make me never want to hear about it again

there was nothing like it around in the early aughts, when i first heard it, let alone 1998. its easy for the younger folks to not get how WEIRD it was.maybe you had to be there. i like it, but i almost never listen to it anymore maybe because i played it out so much then. move on, but give it a listen sporadically every couple years

I understand your fascination with rhinos, they are indeed majestic creatures, but allow me to briefly give you some facts about hyenas.
Female spotted hyenas have the largest clitorises in the entire animal kingdom. The clitorises can grow to almost an entire foot in length, and in some cases they are long enough to drag on the ground while the animal is walking.

      this
it's the same feeling I got when listening to Death Grips when they first released their first project Exmilitary. There just wasn't any sound like Neutral Milk Hotel up until that point.

It's more that the performances are extremely earnest. You don't have to know what they're talking about but Jeff n' pals play like they fucking BELIEVE in whatever it is they're going on about.

    >I don't get it
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is an indie folk rock album that uses low-fi recording methods to add distortion rather than the use of pedals or Big Muffs. The lyrics are intentionally surreal, vague, but at times clearly metaphorical. Some say the album is about childhood nostalgia, Anne Frank, existential dread, or all of the above.
