How to meditate?

I want to improve my life and have less negative thoughts all the time. Most of my negative thoughts are about myself and past traumatic events. When I try to mediate think about nothing these thoughts are at their strongest. Guide me bros

    >When I try to mediate think about nothing these thoughts are at their strongest.
This isn't accurate. There's a type of meditation where you generally think about nothing, but most meditation is actually thinking about something really really hard. So much that it becomes your entire universe, and thus you have achieved "thinking about nothing" because you have nothing else to compare to the object you are thinking of.

It might be beneficial to add a notation meditation into your practice as well. Don't try and block out your thoughts, and instead observe them ad they flow through your mind. Are they dark or bright? Loud or quiet? Where do they come from? They can be in many different places. Right in front of us, or off to the left and down a little bit. Maybe it's all around. How does it make you feel? Are the feelings reasonable? Do you like this memory? If so how can you call it back? Do you not? Then how can you work through it or banish it away?

      >most meditation is actually thinking about something
Never be this moronic anon. You can't meditate and think without being an absolute master of meditation.

        >Never be this moronic anon.
Anon you probably shouldn't be calling people moronic when your definition of meditation is one in the same with sleeping.

Quieting your inner monolog is not the cessation of thinking. When people meditate they are focusing on their breathing, focusing on their body, on an image, on a mantra, on a sound, or an emotion. All of that involves thinking.

          >You can't meditate and think
Wasted digits. Do you even know the meaning of the word "meditate"? And the masters, the actual authorities in meditation will tell you it's thinking about God. Only commercial "yogis" will tell you about "mindfulness" and thinking about nothing, emptying your mind. Liars the lot of them

If you think you can't be fully focused on breath. Mantras are played in the mind but the repetitive act makes it a mindless non-action.
          >All of that involves thinking.
None of those have to involve thinking. The mind is an expert in misleading and you are buying the lies.
          >your definition of meditation is one in the same with sleeping.
Sleeping is unconscious, thinking is less unconscious, meditation is conscious.

          >the actual authorities in meditation will tell you it's thinking about God
Cherry picking the one definition out of hundreds that sounds like thinking.
Silence is the language of God, in meditation you are mentally silent, so you are thinking/talking God's language.
You can name the "actual authorities" and I quote them back to you.

How long have you "meditated"? It's truly puzzling how the mind can fool us, the addiction to thinking is sickening.

My God anon, I have never met anyone who let the ball fly so far above their heads.
            >If you think you can't be fully focused on breath. Mantras are played in the mind but the repetitive act makes it a mindless non-action.
Again my friend thinking =/= your inner monolog thinking is far more than thar. If you are focusing on something you are by definition thinking.
            >None of those have to involve thinking. The mind is an expert in misleading and you are buying the lies.
            By definition it does.
            >Sleeping is unconscious, thinking is less unconscious, meditation is conscious.
If you are not thinking then you aren't aware of anything. Ergo, you are sleeping. Unconscious. If you are focusing on your breath then you are aware of your breath, and thinking about your breath. If you are chanting a mantra then you are focusing on that mantra and thus thinking about that mantra.

"Thinking about nothing" is a paradoxical statement of its own. And it's also confusing to beginners who try and meditate and think they are actually supposed to think of nothing instead of thinking of something so deeply that it "becomes nothing".

            I'm not this anon but
            >Cherry picking the one definition out of hundreds that sounds like thinking.
Is literally what you did to my post. Even though forms of meditation include multiple that involve not just thinking, but inner monolog as well.
            >Silence is the language of God, in meditation you are mentally silent
Except in mantra meditation, discursive meditation, notation meditation.
            >How long have you "meditated"? It's truly puzzling how the mind can fool us, the addiction to thinking is sickening.
What's puzzling to me is how you don't get the difference between thinking and your inter monolog. You're "gatekeepy" and patronizing posting style suggests you aren't getting the most out of your meditation sessions though.

Look outside of the window without thinking, do you still experience?

A lot of mindmade nonsense but do name the "actual authorities" let's see what they say.

            >Look outside of the window without thinking, do you still experience?
Anon again, if I wasn't thinking I would be unconscious. Or worse. I'm not sure what is so hard to get here. Have you been so corrupted by your inner monolog that you can't think about getting something to eat without telling your self "I sure am hungry right now. Can you not see a sight and think that it is beautiful without telling yourself "wow the sunset sure is pretty today"?

This is the fear you got stuck with.
Try to stop thinking it is safe, many do it every day. No don't believe the mind that says you should fall asleep, simply stop thinking remaining awake.

The issue is clear, you are afraid.
If you can name the actual authorities I can help you understand what meditation is, but you already know, how else you could avoid seeing the simple truth.

            Anonymous

My God my man what is with your ego? The issue is quite clear, and it's not fear it's semantics. Why you keep pretending we aren't talking about the same thing is beyond me.

What you call not thinking I call silence. Calling silence "not thinking" is confusing to people who then go on to take it to it's most litteral meaning and try and meditate off into some fricking abyss instead of utilizing a meditation object.

When you do breathing meditation you are silently thinking about nothing but the breath. When you do mantra meditation you focus entirely on the mantra. When visualizing you focus entirely on the visual.

When that object becomes everything in existence that is what is called thinking about "nothing". You are still thinking but there is nothing but the object you are thinking of thus it being "nothing".

Uh IDK, what translation is it? I just use an app on my phone. It has a couple of translations built in. My favorite is the Mitchell one. While I have heard from some people that it isn't that great because it takes some artistic liberty that apparently obfuscates some of the deeper alchemical secrets hidden within, I do find it the most readable and accessible, so probably best for beginners, since it isn't overly convoluted.
You can also just read it online.

Hey OP, I found more success with "loving-kindness" or "compassion" meditation when I used to have really bad anxiety and intrusive thoughts.

One way is to imagine breathing in your bad feelings and taking them away, imagining them as heavy and disgusting, and breathing out love and kindness for yourself.
Another is to alternate between giving kindness to yourself and giving kindness to someone else or the world.
Yet another is to repeat phrases in your head like "May I be well" and whatever else you want to wish yourself.

I like to help, so here's a few methods I've used.
    Method one: three count
Stop trying to empty your mind. It won't work. Instead, attempt to simply center yourself.
Sit in a comfortable chair with a straightish back. Place your feet with soles firmly on the ground, about two feet apart. Keep your hands somewhere comfortable, in your lap, on the chair arms, etc. Focus on your breathing. Other thoughts will enter, but you should simply not hold onto them, just let them go. Breathe in segments of three seconds. Three counts in, three counts hold, three counts out, three counts hold. Repeat. Eventually you may feel a buzzing sensation in your hands. Focus on the breathing. When the body begins to relax, start clenching and unclenching your muscles, starting from as high on your body as you can and moving down. I start with my brows. Also press your tobgue against the roof of your mouth or the back of your front teeth at this point. Continue breathing, continue clenching and unclenching muscles. Repeat until desired results achieved.
I used to use this method to fall asleep.

    Method two: Taoist based

Sit in the lotus position, on just cross legged on the floor or a comfortable cushion. Imagine that there are two luminous, golden hoses attached to your nose via the nostrils.
    These are good energy.
Imagine as well that there is a black, shadowy hose connected to your mouth.
This is for bad energy to leave.
Breathe in through your nose, imagining your body taking in good energy, breathe in until you feel full. Breathe out through your mouth, expelling bad energy, breathe out until you feel empty. Repeat as desired.
The goal is to eventually be breathing in much longer than breathing out.
I use this method for relaxation.

      Hare Krsna Hare Krsna
      Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
      Hare Rama Hare Rama
      Rama Rama Hare Hare
And be self content. Don't take drugs, don't take to fornication and don't eat the flesh of another animal

Maybe learn from the actual sources instead of what moronic hippie stoners say about it

it's impossible. you're predetermined to live out varying archetypes, many of which are traumatic. you can deduce these from your vedic natal chart (planets, fixed stars, and asteroids). even disciplined monks get reactionary from time to time.

I've always hard to kind of ask yourself "I wonder what my next thought will be". That will kind of help you to start to observe your thoughts in real time. most people do it the other way around, they have the thoughts and then sort of review them
