They don't, I was an asshole on discord to people as a joke and even being sincerely nice to them afterwards they still despised me and worked to gossip about me every turn they could or have others turn against me behind my back. This, i've had a discord account for years but i never joined a public sever, i just use it for the few people i know irl (3 friends and my brothers)
You be a cunt while also mixing in enough venting/schizoposting for one or two core server members to start taking pity on you, then you leverage that into a position of semi-power in the overall group.
It's very hard to manage, disastrous to your mental health and there's always a bigger cunt ready to come along and usurp you. At the end of it all you don't even really have friends, just people who tolerate you because you're really good at tearing other people down for the servers amusement.
You'll be happier just never getting started with Discord really.
depends on the size of the server. depends if you VC (this speeds up getting to know ppl quite a bit) ,and depends on ur personality/voice/other personal traits. join a server that has like 100-200 members max. dont join the giant servers like freezer (idek if that server is still around) with thousands of ppl. join vc when other ppl are there, but not when there are only 2 ppl, u dont wanna be a third wheel. talk in chat only when u actually care whats being said, or u just come off as autistic. and scope out the server before being racist or something like that so u dont piss everyone off.

Servers with 100-200 people that are that active are usually somewhat difficult to get into. I'd look for 500-1k servers, as long as they aren't too fast.

I don't care for the community shit, the couple i've tried (flight sim communities) it all feels too close knit and i never felt like trying to be integrated with them, i never saw the purpose of purely online friendships/relationships, it just feels really weird to me
the only time i might go into public discords these days is for the very occasional trolling, but it lasts as long as griefing on like a DarkRP server, its fun for about 15 minutes and thats about it

Do not join those sorts of servers, you'll be involved with at least 3 different criminals and there seems to be drama every 5 seconds with backstabbing and mentally unwell individuals who don't go outside.
This has always been an issue in chatrooms. Communities are too close-knit and you get the tight circle of cunts who shit on anyone outside the circle.

It used to be good, but like pretty much every other platform fell apart due to greed and censorship
They try to weave Nitro into everything for ridiculously basic features, like adding animated emojis and server banners, now are charging for permanent invite links, so many servers have been falsely banned including a couple of my own.
It's also hard to make friends on, you DM like 3 people and your account gets shadow banned
