Chile was fighting against the Mapuches back then

The Chile-Mapuche war was formally declared in 1870, however soon there was an informal truce, that lasted until 1881 due to the war Chile had in the north, the Mapuches seeing that Chile was occupied with another war, organized their last real effort to remain independent, however just after Chile triumphed in the north, mobilized its troops to crush the Mapuche resistance and finally succeeded in seizing the Araucania from the Mapuche.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_Araucan%C3%ADa
        >Mapuches noticed the shrinking of Chilean garrisons as Chile sent troops northwards to fight Peru and Bolivia during the War of the Pacific (1879–1883). The apparent weakening of Chilean military presence in Araucanía and the many abuses caused the Mapuches to start planning rebellion. In January 1881 the Mapuches of the Malleco zone rose against the Chilean occupation. The town and forts of Traiguén, Lumaco and Collipulli were attacked.
        >Having decisively defeated Peru in the battles of Chorrillos and Miraflores in January 1881 Chilean authorities turned their attention to Araucanía seeking to defend the previous advances that had been so difficult to establish. The idea was not only to defend forts and settlements but also to advance the frontier all the way from Malleco River to Cautín River.

What about peru though? Pretty sure they alone had a bigger population than chile, and they were a centre of spanish colonial operations and had resources and shit. Chile is half a mountain range on the periphery of civilization, how did they manage to capture a capital 1000 miles outside their own territory?

Peru conscription system was inefficient, as most people could just avoid it, and indios simply didn't join the army except a few cases.

Basically this. Peruvian army was mostly criollos and castizos, and a few indios and zambos.

Don't forget the time the Chilean navy MOGGED the american navy
    >The Panama Crisis of 1885 was an intervention by the United States in support of a rebellion in Panama, at the time part of Colombia, and an ensuing show of force by Chile.
    >In response to the American intervention, Chile sent the protected cruiser Esmeralda to Panama City, arriving on April 28.
    >The Esmeralda's captain was ordered to stop by any means an eventual annexation of Panama by the United States.
    >According to a U.S. publication in August 1885, right after the Panama events, "[The Esmeralda] could destroy our whole navy, ship by ship and never be touched once."

Argentina, Brazil and Chile didn't frick around during the late XIX and early XX centuries. They had the best militaries in the world outside of Europe and America. Conparable to the Austrians, the ottoman empire or the emerging Japan.

      >The Esmeralda's captain was ordered to stop by any means an eventual annexation of Panama by the United States.
This is just so funny to me. Chile of all places sends a ship to prevent the U.S annexation of Panama "by any means necessary". Of all things to be doing in the late 19th century in the southern cone (genociding mapuche, exporting sugar, beating the shit out of bolivia) they choose intervening in panama

Latin america was not completely considered america's backyard back then in the XI century. America was a regional power, not the worldwide super power itis today. The british navy was much more of a threat to them.
They did had almost full domination over North america(wich includes mexico, central america, and the caribbean) and they proved it their mexican war(and later the spanish american war).
They even respected Bolivar when Gran Colombia was born.

Peru was seen by Chile as the bastion of the Spanish race in South America just a few decades before the war, but then Italians and Basques began to emigrate en masse to Argentina and Chile respectively, there were also europeans heading to Peru, although to a lesser extent, and economic crises were a constant brake on the process, and the War of the Pacific didn't help at all, some even moved to Chile, and by the end of it, a sort of "race wars" broke out all over Peru, for example, on the coast, africans started to kill chinese people, in the moutains, the indian peasants (armed by military leaders who retreated inland after Lima's occupation) soon started a killing spree against the "whites" be they peruvians/chileans/etc.

Well, for starters, Bolivia has been completely shit at warfare, and with the sorry state their army always seems to be in, it's strange that they were picking wars
Also, Chile had the better navy (not to suprising when you look at the shape of Chile), which was the only thing that could keep supplies coming to the troops in such an inhospitable place

It was a war for natural birdshit deposits, used as fertilizant for european agriculture. The chileans managed to take this peruvian ship intact and kept it as a war trophy.
Behind Chile there was this british guy called North, an Elon Musk-like figure who made some mad profits.
