> Maintenance
Don't mind if it's up to twice more expensive then other brands. It's still looks good and drives well. But more than that makes me restless. I already bought 2009 bmw but hearing how everybody is complaining about maintenance cost i feel like i will need to get rid of it. Shame though.
bro i don't care about your european gayness
It’s not much more expensive than repairing any other car. Their engines are reliable, I have a heavily modified active hybrid 3 and the n55 engine has been bulletproof.
>hearing how everybody is complaining about maintenance cost
the people that rant about bimmer maintenance costs are one of the following
>can't wrench or think outside the box
>poor
>both
Depends on where you are. If you are in the US, expect a lubeless backdoor delivery.
What country?
What model?
Moldova. i28i
thanks for nothing you Romanian retard
it's one of the better engines to have, you'll be fine. N52
moldovean bazat.
2009 118d 2l 105kw
Unironically kill yourself, burn that thing you dare call a bmw
>a bmw is not a bmw.. because I SAID SO OKAY I DONT LIKE IT
whatever you say, your 118d will never be close to my 540i
Your 540i will never be close to my 750i nor 760i
if it's any of the new 7ers then yeah you will never be equal to me
E32 and E38 750i and an E66 760i, all V12, let me see if I can find pics of the E66 as I formatted my PC due to it acting up and I just managed conveniently fall on my ass yesterday when going downhill with rollerskates and my phone was in my backpocket.
Based fren, how's the E66 treating ya? I had the chance to own one but I passed up on it. Also had a 740i manual E38.
It's "okay", it doesn't feel as solid as the E32 and E38, the doors ring hollow when you slam then shut, the suspension feels really floaty and numb, which I mean it's a luxury car and all, but there's not a hint of sportyness in it.
The gear selector stalk was a mistake, but the seats are top comfy. Heated and ventilated.
I bought it for cheap because big boy DOHC V12 and my god the N73 is a powerhouse, has half a ton of torque from the idle and pulls all the way till the limiter, speed limiter that is, like you just launched.
Traded this CRD Touring 300C with a Benz 3 litre turbodiesel V6 and an E60 530D for it because diesel tax is a bitch in europe.
I was thinking about getting the E66 in diesel too, but again dieseltax.
That being said my wife drives an E87 120i, she loves it, I hate it because it's a flood car and I have to chase electrical gremlins every day.
>diesel tax is a bitch in europe.
not everywhere, in the balkans 90% of bimmers are diesel because they're cheaper on the tax and they're cheap power.
When I lived in the Netherlands I saw no diesel bmws because of their diesel taxes.
Yeah i know basic eco car model and a luxury brand doesn’t match well but still parts are still bmw and they are still expensive.

316i (e30)
Not mine, familia. Want to help fix it but all i know is gran turismo. What to do?
>inb4 kys
>316i
I'm sorry, but consider M50 swapping. The M40 is kinda junk when compared to the old pig iron M10 that can take a beating and a half that would make even the sturdiest toyota engines scream for help.
People are quick to knock the M40, but it all comes down to maintenance. Obviously the M10 can take more abuse than the M40, but If the engine has been well maintained, like my M40B18 powered 318i E30 was, it can easily exceed 200,000 miles, as you can see on my odometer. One of the bigger failure points on the M40's is the camshaft oil rail, which can get clogged with deposits and starve the cams of oil. Keep your oil changes regular, and the oil rail stays clean. The M40 is fine. It's not great, but it's fine. Adequate. Acceptable. Cromulent, as DankPods might say.
Captcha: DAYAM
The m40 is an okay engine, but there's no reason not to do a next gen 6cyl swap, there's literal thousands, maybe tens of thousands tried and true M5x engine swaps on the E30
> there's no reason not to do a next gen 6cyl swap
From the perspective of an enthusiast with time and tools on hand, I completely agree with you, but for your average enthusiast, who probably doesn't even own an engine lift? I can't recommend it. It's easy for us to say engine swap it, but realistically speaking, an engine swap is not a quick or simple task, nor is it particularly cheap. I can't even suggest buying an E30 that's already been swapped, as you have no idea what quality of work was performed by the guy who put the motor in (assuming it was a DIY job, anyway). For someone who just wants a cheap E30 that starts, stops, and will continue running for as long as it's cared for, I can't think of a reason to not buy an M40 equipped car.
Adjusted by engine size, not much. And you will have no problem getting parts in east europe. They are expensive compared to 75hp econoboxes.
I bought 2009 diesel with n47 engine that is notorious for timing chain breaking. It cost 1k+ euro to change the chain and it could snap anytime.
I'm not sure if i should change it because it's just so expensive. Or risk it and drive around hoping it will hold. That's a serious dilemma i have.
unless you're doing some crazy long roadtrip just keep driving it until the chain breaks.
A good chain should run you 180 and be a 2.5 hour job at the most when done by yourself.
one more
My bimmer is 18 years old. I bought it for $5k at 117k miles, now at 141k. Only mechanical problem I’ve had was a bad hose from the coolant reservoir. Most of these things have good, reliable engines provided you take care of em and it wasn’t already beat to hell by previous owners.
>other brands
what other brands? ferrari? rover? honda? fiat? fucking eslnaggers
Honestly, not that much else compared to other things. Brand new Hyundais and Toyotas are even becoming maintenance nightmares now, a shop I know was saying the other day how the SUV models are going through front control arms in less than a year in some cases. You might as well buy something old and interesting rather than spend the same on maintaining something and shitty.
Inshallah brother.
they get annoying problems with modules and like to leak oil but even doing a head rebuild costs a couple hundred in gaskets as long as you're not a wrenchlet.
There's a few factors at play here.
>the "good" models aren't that much more expensive than your standard European cars, but the "bad" models can have apocalyptically expensive issues
>BMWs are generally very allergic to neglect and low quality spares (most notoriously the various sensors), skimping here means lots more expense down the line
>labor is where they really get you
If you know what you're doing, they can be pretty good cars and the sheer amount of community knowledge plus the factory floor diagnostics software being publicly available is a great boon for wrenching on the cheap, but if you just go out and buy a beat to shit E60 545i on the original transmission oil and none of the big N62 "features" fixed, you'll be paying new BMW money to keep that shitshow on the road. If this sounds like BMWfag cope it kind of is, but for me it's worth it.
after market sensors being shit is a meme and cope from wrenchlets with too much money. the oem $1000 eccentric shaft sensor has the exact same 2 cent hall sensor in it as the $50 one off Ali.
>but if you just go out and buy a beat to shit E60 545i on the original transmission oil and none of the big N62 "features" fixed, you'll be paying new BMW money to keep that shitshow on the road.
I literally did this, cost me almost triple the original price and 2 years to bring it back to good condition
"there is nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW"
100% this. So long as it's been maintained (with physical proof like receipts, not just verbal), they can make for great cars, and parts really aren't that expensive, at least not here in bongland. ///M cars are a different kettle of fish obviously, but your average E46/E39 is a solid choice for a daily driver.
>t. owned an E46 330ci and E39 523i, and currently own an E46 M3.
It depends entirely on the sensor/application. I had a crankshaft sensor go bad on my 330ci, so bought a MEYLE branded sensor with zero luck. Thought maybe it was just because it was a cheap sensor, so went and bought a HELLA branded sensor, and still no luck. At this point I was thinking that maybe there was something wrong with the reluctor ring on the crank, but decided to try the genuine OEM article from the dealer anyway, and it ran perfect. On the other hand, I bought HELLA camshaft sensors, and they worked fine. Fuck knows what space magic those ECU's use to read what the sensors send, but they just don't like some aftermarket ones.
>currently own an E46 M3
lucky bastard
Honestly, I'd rather an M5. I do really like my M3, but I much prefer the S62 to the S54. No valve adjustment, better exhaust note (in my opinion), no bearing issues, and strong low-end torque make for a much better daily. Would be the perfect track car, tough.
what makes oil, brakes, and tires more expensive? literally the same for everyone
the audi a3 has regular sized 195/65 15inch tires.
your beemer has 220/85/18inch tires.
it also most like REQUIRES racing 5/50 oil, whether a regular car is fine with 10w40
>220/85/18inch
Those are truck tires, of course they're going to be expensive.
I don't mean SUV tires or cuckover tires that you're more familiar with, I mean those are proper truck tires.
Regular BMW tires are no different from your shitbox tires.
It also takes the exact same oil as your shitbox audi, but doesn't burn it unlike the audi.
Only shit like M cars need "special" oils and only the S65 and S85 V8 and V10 engines in the E90 M3 and E60 M5
you know how to push my buttons dont you cowboy.
1. its an SUV, its not a crossover, you got your information wrong bro, youve been playing too much call of duty.
2. the BMWs definitely have WIDER tires with 17inch rims which are double the price of my tires.
3. check out...they sell LINGLONG tires for my suv..its only 70$ bro
*crossover you turkish dog
Also they sell linglongs and triangles and whatever black and round for everything for about 50 bucks per tire, even for X5, X6 and X7 SUV BMWs, which are proper SUVs by the way
nah youve been playing too much call of duty my friend. its a real SUV.
i also have a real watch with a wooden bezel, unlike your rubber band toy or wahtever youre wearing
BMW only requires 10W-60 on the M cars. The regular ones use 5W-30/40 or 0W-20 on some of the new ones. BMW LL-01 is one of the most common specs.
Someone with a B58?
I want my next car to be a F22 235/240i, is the 240i the car to get or will the N55 do just fine?
The cars cost about the same, the 235s are a bit cheaper because they are older but other than that there isn't much of a difference in my country.
B58 is more reliable, both great engines
316i is nothing special or crazy but you better start fixing it soon because a lot of E30 parts are going NLA and less and less of them are being available as donor cars
Look into engine swapping it unironically, M50,M52,M54 are all amazing engines in it, and you don't need the 3L ones either since the E30 weighs barely a ton.
Thanks for the hints, by now we're starting with basics like make it running fine, while finding and fixing minor annoying things mostly due to its age. Also it's rust free thanks to climate.
Different engine was already considered but it will take a while since before that, its original reliability must be restored
In America they can be a pain, but that's because we're used to Japanese and Korean cars with parts plants right here or cheap Mexican labor parts if you buy American. Most European parts are Bosch or are made somewhere in China which means painful overseas shipping upcharges.
That being said most of the shit-tier BMW problems are a result of bad owners and bad maitenence. I'm currently in a battle having bought a bad BMW that has quite a bit to fix (and now the engine is both leaking and overfilled with oil which is just me being angry and retarded) and I'm trying to decide whether or not I wanna keep driving it and eat the costs for repair because it's at low mileage or just buy my friend's high mileage Lexus.
I will say though, mine's a 2010 550i with a V8 and the most trusted Euro mechanic in town gave me the opinion that BMW V8s are ticking time bombs. He thinks the I6s are good though.
Cost like any other car imho
