about same. at one point I owned about 2000 on vinyl but knew plenty of people who had many times that number. One guy I was surprised about was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. His LA house burned to the ground years and years ago, which wouldn't be a biggie since insurance and so on and him being rich. Anyway, it came out that he lost thousands of jazz recordings on vinyl, like 10,000 or something. Jazz collectors from all over the world started sending him records by the hundreds and eventually thousands.

      Probably around 20k
But I am older than dirt

3 to 4k. I don't believe anyone who says 10k or over unless they are in their 60s

And how many of those are even worth listening to? I feel like there can't be more than 1000 good albums. 1000 already feels like a stretch

plenty of bad albums have one or two good songs though

In current day with the internet unless you are dedicated to one shitty microgenre you can easily find 3-5 albums worth hearing every day for the rest of your life.

most people are only into 2-3 main genres at max though and there's nothing wrong with that.

Not joking. I'm easily one of the oldest posters on LULZ. My (ballpark) 20K has taken nearly half a century.

why do people go on the internet and tell lies?

The 9000+ guy is memeposting. How do you not know that meme? The 2 guys claiming around 20k are likely twice your age (assuming they aren't trolling).

nobody has heard over 20k albums. old people didn't have access to the internet and so had to pay money to hear albums. it's only been 25 years MAX that free access to albums has been a thing and that long ago most people weren't even online and those that were didn't have high speed internet or album streaming. it's really just the past 15 years or so when people can really crank out tons of album listens

Hearing 3 albums a day is feasible. That's 1000 per year. I could see someone hitting 10k EASY if they've been online since the MP3 filesharing days.

my post was about 20k. 10k is more reasonable and would just be for people in their 40s or above

Like I said, 10k ain't shit. You could do that in 2 decades. If you were old enough (and dedicated) then you could have another several thousand on top of that from the pre-internet days. So let's assume that they're both exaggerating and their real number is actually more like "closer to 20k than 10k". That I could see being legit if you were a middle-aged or older music devotee.

you have no idea how rare it is to have heard "several thousand" albums pre-internet

It's less than one a day if I only started at 15, and I started earlier than that. I listen to multiple full albums in a day every week or so and then a few scattered throughout the week.
I'm just old and there is an endless supply of new stuff coming out. I still love weeding through stuff and finding new favorites. I'll admit I don't always finish an album but I very rarely listen to less than half and I usually just finish them. I almost always listen while I work, 7 days a week most weeks, for the last 40 years or so. Today so far I've listened to the new This is the Kit, Buck Meek, and Ora Cogan, because I'm just in that kind of mood. Liked all of them and I'm relistening to the This is the Kit for the 2nd or 3rd time already. I still listen to less music daily than most people spend watching TV/streaming shit.
20k is honestly probably a pretty modest guess. I think most people here would be surprised at how many artists/albums they've listened to if they really sat down and thought about it or actually cataloged anything, even with old and new favorites you always come back to. I live for finding one of those albums where you're just obsessed with that one for weeks, and then you have a ton of new stuff waiting for you when you're finally a bit played out on it - that's the stuff right there

Not as much as you’d think. I know more music than the average normie, but I also get stuck on songs and listen to them for weeks, months, years on end. I rotate 20 songs or so until I happen to find a new one I can milk dry. I’ve listened to some songs over 1000 times over a course of 10 years.

yeah, are we talking complete albums? every track at least once? probably less than 10% of the music anyone ever listens to is in the form of a complete album. I have no doubt that I've listened to 15K+ different songs and that is a very conservative estimate. I also know that I have listened to over 2000 complete albums because I have owned that many on vinyl at one time or another and I don't collect them like mint baseball cards and store them unplayed.

I was thinking about this the other day. I've been an online music autist since the dawn of P2P file-sharing and have probably listened to at least one new album for about every two days since, which would put the total at around 3,650. No way to tell if that's accurate, there are plenty of days where I listen to more and stretches of time where I don't seek new stuff out. For the last decade I've had a job where I can listen to whatever I want all day, so I put on a lot of stuff there and "listen" but don't pay full attention.
