how does?

how does LULZ feel about them?

I like them and they are a lot better than any other band in their genre, BUT I rarely admit to that because of how gay and cringe the new fanbase is.

        Aren't they nu-metal?

        Anonymous

Well early on its undeniably nu-metal and that element did stay through their career but when they have songs like Be Quiet & Drive, Korea, Passenger etc its clear they are a lot more evolved.
Honestly I think their influences help them, they list bands like Hum, Helmet, Failure as influences and inspirations, all those bands have giant guitar sounds with alt metal influence.
For example, Korea by Deftones is essentially Little Dipper by Hum
Be Quiet and Drive is eerily Hum sounding, to my ears anyway.

word thanks for the recs, ive been into them heavy lately but i feel like theyre one of those bands where youre not gonna find anything similar thats anywhere as good. also tryna find some shit like basement and superheaven which idk what youd call them maybe post punk?

Dunno if it was you but an anon recommended Narrow Head when I also asked for similar bands to Deftones. Sound not just like them but basically every 90s alt/indie band smushed into one. It's good stuff.

This. LULZfags used to talk about Deftones back in 2021, anons even have White Pony, Around The Fur or both on their album charts.

They are undeniably good though imho and I don't think I could disagree with them being a great band, it's just that the new fan base is just full of intolerable idiots.

ESLs are now so retarded they're insisting they know your language better than you do.

its not, in fact, their buddy; that's the possessive their as in some quality or thing the subject possesses. It would be "they're", as in the contraction for "they are". Maybe you should spend 10 seconds to look up shit you don't know instead of doubling down and looking like a dumbass.

How is a new generation of fans engaging with a veteran act on their own terms "tanking their credibility"? Like, in what way has this invalidated the artist's work that has existed for decades at this point? This seems like such a strange thing to say, it's like discrediting Starry Night because there are digital replications of it in art textbooks.

They were a class B side show when numetal was in vogue. It was the favorite band of no one. And with good reasons.
Now we have a new fanbase of people who dont really like the genre pretending they were always good. Or worse above the genre.
    They werent ever good.

And they werent less numetal tham Soad and Slipknot, who barely were numetal and were still grouped with the others.

      >Zoomer discovers that a genre name groups bands with different sounds and styles.
What you listen to "grunge" and start comparing them. Yes, deftones is numetal like slipknot, linkin park, limp bizkit, soad and other bands that had little to nothing in common

        Anonymous

Sure, but nu-metal's generally associated with an emphasis on rhythm, a distance/absence of solos and some kind of incorporation of hip-hop's techniques and general cadence, and all those bands have some association with those concepts to some degree or another. Hell, Slipknot has a fucking turntablist. I guess Deftones will always have the former points for as long as Stephen's their lead guitarist but they've gone far off that track. They prettified up their sound with so much new wave/dream pop/shoegaze influence, their turntablist has been using synths for almost 20 years now, Stephen sounds more and more like a third rate djent player as time goes on, it's hard to say that grassroots nu metal essence they had is even really expressed anymore.

          Anonymous

It's weird cause without Stephen, Chino side-projects haven't been great even though on paper they should be awesome (an epic post-metal album with the guys from Isis, romantic Cure-esque rock with his childhood friend from Far). But also the last couple Deftones albums have been very bland, straight forward albums. I imagine Stephen put his foot down to Chino's artsier tendencies on them and that made for maybe the weakest albums in their discography.

Wtf? Team Sleep is arguably better than most Deftones albums.

              Anonymous

Team Sleep is a special case, bc Chino & his homie Todd Wilkerson spent almost a decade casually recording & developing demos before deciding to produce an official album, whereas one gets the impression that he never invests a comparable amount of time or energy into any of his other side projects

I see Gore and Ohms as complete inverses. Gore saw them get as artsy as they ever would with lighter sounds and some good songs came of it, but the production hurts it immensely. It almost sounds unmastered. Ohms, on the other hand, felt to me like a conscious attempt to staple 2010s Deftones and 1990s Deftones together to mixed songwriting results but Date comes in clutch on that production, it SOUNDS great.

      Anonymous

They've been a hodgepodge of shoegaze, post-hardcore and post-metal for almost a quarter of a century at this point. But I imagine a lot of people just remember them as that shouty chin beard band from the 90s that had a DJ so they're forever nu-metal.
