How do you guys cope with the fact that your careers are software engineers are going to be over? I actually am suffering really bad anxiety over it. I've only been doing this for like 4 years and now suddenly the career potentially has a lifespan of like 10-15 years left at best. In some estimates, the field will shrink so much that the salaries will be severely depressed.
How do you cope? Actually might an hero because of this.
Lighten up man, you know they say when one door closes another one opens, just enjoy what you have as long as you can (or as long as you want to). And when the time to move onto something else comes, there will be something new to jump into. I don't think it'll be as scary as you seem to think it will be.
You're fine, you have a job, you're still growing, and there will be a place for you, have some faith, and don't listen to LULZ trying to scare you
Don't listen to this guy. It's all over.
>It's all over.
Put your money where your mouth is.
Create your own company and do market capture yourself with your AI serfs. That is legit the only way, you would've discovered this back in March 2023 if you were not a depressed pessimistic bastard. Look at the bright side and fight for your (financial) life.
Demoralisation thread. Poooo.
Maybe it's time to learn some hardware hacking.
Build a robot. Become the boss of robots.
Because I'm good at anything I devote myself to, so whatever jobs the future brings, I'll be well positioned to take advantage of them. If you have a solid background in mathematics, electronics and physics, life becomes pretty easy.
forget about 'over' i can't even fucking get it started. i wish i'd gone for forensics or corporate law like i'd meant to
learn plumbing
I have a real job so I'm not worried.
Yeah it feels like shit bro I'll be honest. I know the LULZ tier advice is to tell you to open up your own AI business or learn a trade, but in reality it is really fucked. I'm also really sad as I've invested like 10 years into this career and really was looking forward to doing it for the rest of my life in some capacity and living a comfortable existence after a long life of hard manual labour and trying to get my education and grind. Now that it's becoming the most likely job to get wiped out first by AI I'm very much depressed as fuck as well. Best I can say is that hopefully when everything goes there will be other careers that potentially have room for you to pivot into.
Dude, it didn't matter what you got into. Your depressive outlook would decry any obstacle in your way. The only person defeating you is yourself. If you can't recognize that, realize the reality that nobody will hold your hand. You must exploit the land to feed your family, take that and move on rather than weeping for the silver spoon that was never there.
Go on, pivot to something like Accounting, then get offshored by the same indian equivalent. Hahahaha jesus christ.
So what do you suggest then? The career is effectively dead in like 10 years. Not even trying to be all doom and gloom about it, but anybody saying it's not is pretty much fully coping.
I am not like you, I don't care about your career path because it isn't relevant to me. Cry all you want.
kill yourself here, depresso. depression is not a personality, seek psychiatric help.
im good with it
coding is fun but it sucks as a career
times were good for a while, but ultimately we are all better off doing something else
(doomer destined to self-sabotage)
(bloomer destined to succeed by trying)
reading comprehension anon
depression causes brain fog, which you are suffering from. I said nothing that implied any sort of psychosis of the situation.
what should i do then? open to advice
get over that it's over
stop fucking selectively listening to those that affirm your pessimistic views and listen to people that are actually in the industry, not trolls on LULZ. bye.
Getting an adhd diagnosis for Ritalin or Adderall is one way to go about it. I don't believe in adhd, but I got the drugs because fuck it, they're Performance enhancing let's be real. I used to be depressed as fuck and suicidal. I won't go into the details but I was truly depressed for over a decade, not just normie "I'm a little sad" depressed. with the stimulants Ive turbo boosted my productivity, and my career is skyrocketing. I can actually do the things I want to do and better myself professionally and artistically. I tried a few anti depressants first, and maybe they work for some people but not for me. After a couple years I decided to just tell the doctor I have all the typical adhd symptoms and get some stims. I used to be pretty heavily anti pharma, but eventually my wife basically told me to shut the fuck up and get drugged up because it's better than living in a constant state of hating life and wanting to lie down on the train tracks outside.
god i want to die but I'm too pussy to kms
I've been on Zoloft for like 10 years. Maybe I should try Adderall? Is it like doing cocaine? Do you have trouble going to sleep?
i dont remember the names of all the antidepressants I took (not anon you are asking) but zoloft was one. What made me stop taking that shit was when I realized that I wasn't depressed but I also felt no joy in life either. Then I got off it and lost weight and was doing really well until I fucked up and got back into drinking. I got back on some antidepressant for a while and it was ok but then they stopped refilling it and said I had to go back to the doctor and I was too anxious to do it so I just stopped taking it lmao.
Now I'm back on full alcoholic (trying to quit but just replacing it with THC water?!?!)
I'm too afraid to go off antidepressants. If I miss one dose I can feel it. I also became borderline alcoholic and just switched to vaping weed. Way less destructive imo
Zoloft made me feel just dull and foggy. Took it for 6 months. As for Adderall I haven't done cocaine but I don't think it's as extreme. It's more like I just actually have a bunch of energy. People on coke I've seen are typically talking really fast and shit it's nothing like that. I don't have trouble sleeping personally.
Specialise hard
Mine just started cuz GPT
It's over.
I actually kind of feel like it is just beginning.
they need monkies to watch over the AI
thank god I only kept computers as a hobby LOLOLOLOL gotta admit it was painful watching you fags brag about high salaries during covid, but look at you lot now
I don't do JS, I will be in future fixing others AI mess and getting more money than ever when actual developers are more rare
Definitely. You're one of the top 0.5% of the entire field of Software Development and there is absolutely no risk to you personally.
You don't even have to be top 0.5%, more like around top 40%, the "AI" at this state is nothing more than stackoverflow copy-paste bot. Even if it ever actually got decent, you would still need actual programmer to use it to get good results.
You idiots are freaking yourselves out because you've spent too many hours on a LULZ "tech" forum and have unrealistic timelines on the progression of AI. 10-15 years is wildly out of touch. Even small companies work with massive thousand method codebases that AI won't be able to handle until it is already conscious and has likely already gained human rights by that point.
Benford's law doesn't apply to AI you twits
That and it's already been decided by the courts that stuff created by AI can't be copyrighted. No company wants to produce a product they won't have the rights to. The guy making cheating programs for cash might lose his business if AI gets good enough to make cheat programs, but no legit business is going to want a product that can be pirated or outright copied since it's copyright free. They already avoid touching anything where they can't figure out who owns the rights.
I don't think you grasp how the legal system works. It can't be copyrighted now because it's all made by hobbyists fucking around on their computer, and they get nothing. Once major corporations want to use it, the law will be changed so that it is protected.
>major corporations want to use media but don't know who owns the rights
>the law isn't changed to allow it
>law still hasn't been changed
Your theory doesn't seem to hold water.
>Once major corporations want to use it
Where the fuck do you think AI came from, a college campus? They are the ones that pushed to make AI created works un-copyrightable since they realized it threatened the money-making potential of all the media they already own. They are still trying to re-litigate the Betamax case, but you don't see them fighting that court decision on AI.
>He's never heard of a trade secret
The Supreme Court will probably revisit it in a decade, if not sooner.
Okay relax guys, you aren't nearly as fucked as the artists are if you already have employment
99% of the jobs lost will be code monkey jobs that are repetitive and there will be a shortage of entry level positions
Me personally I'm trying to get ahead of the train and prove I can produce large software projects with the help of AI rather than finish my degree (not that I recommend someone do that)
>AI smart enough to take your job
>robots not good enough to fight wars by themselves
We're all gonna die in trenches.
I really am not sure what to do. If I can get another ten years of my current salary I'll be able to live on minimum wage but life is just going to keep getting worse.
LULZ bros..may the best software engineer WIN
Thankful.
Learn other skills. There’s no shortcut. Just prepare yourself. You will feel better when you have something else to fall back on.
life of crime. more fun. more money.
I didn't fall for the developer or programmer meme lmao
the best case is that llms are another no-code "solution" that gets dropped when the next hype train starts
the worst case is that software engineering becomes a game of jannying the llm
you shouldn't be identifying with your career in either case
this is a societal question.
the rich are dumb. i will always have the funs. more new news please.
I'm a network technician. I work in IT. If AI can replace me, I'll welcome it. Good luck. It's the hardest job or career I've ever had mentally. It has the highest turnover rate due to just how incredibly annoying it is. If you knew how fragile the internet really was, you'd be at my house with an 18 year old virgin 10/10 every day demanding that she service my cock.
over because why?
anyway if you're good at it and you have a career and you believe your OP to be true, the logical thing is to live like a miser and invest in stock index funds like crazy, so you'll have some form of ownership and profit from whatever this new world you are envisioning is
i hope this is the path.
replicated vulnerabilities /w no support.
more crime is needed.
fuck the bots.
follow the money.
>I've only been doing this for like 4 years and now suddenly the career potentially has a lifespan of like 10-15 years left at best.
if you've been in it for 4 years and somehow think the retarded AI can replace you, then you might be able to be replaced anon.
I will literally die if my charisma and communication skills carry me into the new world
slick talkers always in demand
been doing this for 15+ years. every 5 years or so a new technology comes along and basically reinvents the field. you'll be fine but dont expect your programming job to be the same in 5 years time unless you work for a mega corp or gov.
I'm going to be the best at ML and ruin all your positive prospectives in life deliberately. If I'm not getting anything out of something I'm willing to gain by destroying it.
This I'm mostly building things out of spite money is a side effect I want people to suffer
we automate more, not less. we still don't have enough coders. the field will only glow in the foreseeable future.
>inb4 b-b-but I can't find a job!
it's a shitty year for getting capital, so the industry is in recession now. it will come back to normal.
>inb4 cope
I am employed as a coder, and changed a job a month ago without any problems.
