You don't have to worry about being a pseud or midwit unless you're pretending to know shit that you don't actually know

      pretty much.
      >people accuse me of being too arrogant and not letting their arguments count
      >when in reality I only state my opinions as facts when I actually know about the topic and am absolutely certain I am right
      >for every other topic where I don't really know anything, I'll either say so or at the most give some speculation which I end with "but that's just speculation"
even if you follow the advice, midwits will still accuse you of being a midwit too because in their mind, everyone else's opinion has to be negotiable and the outcome of the negotiation always has to be that the other side agrees with the midwit, because clearly he is always right about everything.
my dad would do that, start talking about things he knows nothing about (like commenting on university when he himself never even finished school but went into trades right away) and yet insist he is 100% right and everyone who disagrees just doesn't want to admit that they "lost the discussion".

I care less about being perceived as right and more about being right though. I want to know the actual answer because it interests me, not because I want to use it to manipulate other people for personal gain.
Granted, sometimes it would be preferable to have the former, especially when all the midwits are about to drag you off a cliff with them.

And I say this in the most caring way (no homo). We live in weird times, appearances are valued above results and qualified people that have the know-how are left to do the grunt work.
Believe it or not I was given a leadership position at my workplace, but thankfully I am smart enough to know I am way too stupid for something like that.
Consider changing your moral values untill you can get a higher social standing or w/e you need so you may influence a lot more people, help them make the right decisions, otherwise they will keep listening to room temperature iqlets like yours truly

      Anonymous

That's actually what it means. It's like 105-120ish IQ. 'Smart', but not actually smart smart

      Anonymous

Individuals of slightly above average intelligence (up to ~115 IQ) know they are smarter than the average person so they reason that they are also not dumb (partially true). This group also knows they can go to certain contexts e.g. sleezy bars, nascar, public schools, etc., and expect to be smarter than most people there. They look at the left side of the IQ curve and say things like "it's those stupid drumpf rednecks!" haha "I'm smart!"

These experiences give them the false impression that they are genuinely intelligent because they can see they are different since personal experience has given them a basic comparison in life. But notice one thing: they do not place themselves into contexts where they will not be the smartest one. Why is that? It's because as mid-wits, they are also ruled by ego and therefore they do not seek out truly intelligent circles that challenge their knowledge, beliefs, and ideas. Instead, they seek out conformist circles (reddit) that reaffirm their beliefs and ideas while padding their ego (upvotes). They also promote censorship against their ideas.

One of the classic signs of a mid-wit is that they're personally attached to their ideas and beliefs; they fear those things being challenged. A genuinely intelligent person welcomes an intellectual challenge because it means that he/she might be corrected and therefore be less wrong. This is because the genuinely intelligent are interested in the truth and can separate ideas from ego.

The mid-wit cohort is not humble enough, because of ego-protection, to accept that people truly smarter than them exist. Instead they prefer to cluster together with other mid-wits rather than learn the extent of their ignorance by seeking out intelligent people. As hinted, another sign of the mid-wit is they cannot parse ideas and beliefs from ego: the two are closely intertwined for them (e.g. idpol, the current thing).

        >A genuinely intelligent person welcomes an intellectual challenge because it means that he/she might be corrected and therefore be less wrong.
This one always fucked me up back when I worked in research. You'd find some fault with a theory, could prove that it was incorrect and could propose an improvement that you at least failed to disprove. And since you are talking to scientists, you'd think they'd love to hear about it because it will help them explain some discrepancies away and lead to a more complete picture of the truth.
Nope. They'd fight you fucking tooth and nails to prevent the publication of that paper.

The average IQ of a scientist is not that high, something like 125IQ. And if you remember Maria from pic rel, she bragged about being a "PhD Cancer Biologist" yet had the lowest IQ of the bunch (112), which is clear mid-wit territory. She also acted like an insufferable reddit mid-wit during the filming who thought she was above everyone in intelligence:

            Anonymous

yeah, I found that out pretty quickly, too. that was the time where I decided to estimate people's intelligence by their willingness to question "common knowledge" rather than their amount of knowledge.
that was also the time people started accusing me of having a problem with authority, which has never been the case. if someone actually has authority, I am perfectly willing to follow them. after all, they are superior to me (at least in that regard) so I will benefit from listening to them.
I just don't believe that attaching random titles to your name means you have authority anymore. some fat dietitian lecturing me about meat will be immediately discarded. they could be right or they could be wrong, but clearly their title is worthless because why would they be a fat loser then, so I better do not take anything they say into consideration.

              >I decided to estimate people's intelligence by their willingness to question "common knowledge" rather than their amount of knowledge.
That's a good approach. Intellectual open-mindedness is a really good proxy for intelligence because it shows a commitment to and understanding of "many possibilities." If intelligence is real, then among other things it's also the ability to see and consider many possibilities where others don't (even about what is assumed "to be true.")

                Anonymous

yeah, at least from my experience, most knowledge is iterative. you look at a problem, come to a conclusion, keep observing the problem through the lense of that conclusion (or put it up for public debate) and see if it fails at any point. and when it does, you integrate that failure into it to make it more precise. or discard it if it's impossible to reconcile it.
if you can't entertain the thought that your conclusion might have been wrong, then you can never go through the refinement process and will always be stuck with the half-assed shit your brain cooked up when it observed it (most likely incompletely) the first time.

I suspect the online IQ test they used inflated their scores because most online tests do that. The fact that Tyler was taking the test on his mobile phone is a bit suspect because only certain questions can fit that kind of format telling me it's not really a serious test.

If they had taken the mensa.dk online test then I have a feeling their scores would be dropped by anywhere from 2-8 points (with variance per individual).

He's just rough around edges socially. Tyler is only 21 too while Maria is 30 and has had a lot more social data compared to Tyler. I agree though, Tyler comes off insecure, awkward, and too rigid (something he will likely grow out of if he is truly intelligent). Maria at 30? Probably never.

To add a few more things.

Mid-wits are cognizant of the left side of the IQ curve but they are completely ignorant of the right side. They don't seem to have the mental capacity to hypothesize the extent of their own possible ignorance on a given matter, to project hypothetically and frame "what I know" vs "what I don't know." This explains why so often they are the epitome of Dunning-Kruger because forecasting possible ignorance is itself a sign of high intelligence (something mid-wits lack).

A mid-wit thinks he's a genius. The mid-wit thinks that he's never wrong and takes offence when you challenge him. But a highly intelligent person (~125-135IQ) knows and suspects the extent of his ignorance and respects his own capacity for error. This person also probably knows several actual geniuses/gifted people (145+ IQ).

The highly intelligent person also understands that he is not gifted and is not a genius himself. The highly intelligent person actually understands what genius looks like and knows that he is definitely not it. The highly intelligent person can see and accept all the facts of the entire IQ curve.

      wit. wisdom.
an above average intellect only makes him more proficient in his rhetoric, as well as more conceited (something the increasingly narcissistic/prideful youth is especially prone to), but not necessarily any more wise
his insistence on being correct stems from his own conceitedness, rather than wit or adherence to truth

It's not a midwit crisis. it's a problem of people being able to retain information that they had to gleam through experience and searching as in reading a book that they had to goto the library to get.

Everything is on line now and people take wikipedia as Gospel when it wrong so many times about just about anything you look up.

My wife calls Millennials the Wikipedia generation.

      Anonymous

I partially agree, although I do not think it's caused by being able to look things up. Rather, it's caused by the absolute information overload you get nowadays and people's inability to disregard irrelevant shit. They will soak up the topic of the day every day so they can participate in the small talk about it, and over that they forget other things they learned in the past. I just have to look at how many boomers in my parent's social circle talk about the weather being more extreme than ever before.
It can't be that they lack the personal experience, because they lived through it. It's just that they forgot that hot, humid summers and freezing winters have always been a thing in Germany because they only remember the recent things™ and the recent things™ claim that it's worse than ever before.
meanwhile, I barely bother to remember shit I consider to be irrelevant, but in exchange I barely ever forget the things I actively want to remember. if some rando introduces themselves to me at a party I will have forgotten their name 10s down the road because I will never meet them again anyway, but most normalfags will bother to remember it for at least some weeks. in exchange, their long term memory is absolutely fucked.

Great post and I would add they aren't actually making memories for the most part. They are holed up in their room on a computer or looking down at a smartphone 8 hours a day.

Alot of what we know is the perception of what we experienced through our own individual actions in real life. You and I will have different views about what happened in the past even if we experienced it together. I guarantee my life in Germany in the late 80s isn't represented by any facts about youth culture in the 1980s in Germany. Everything is filtered though ourselves or others.

When those "facts" come from Wikipedia. Well one doesn't really know. One is parsing another persons or a consensus view of what reality was in the past. Most times it is edited by people with an agenda to push a specific narrative.

An Example. I can say that AIDS was called the gay plague up until 1987.
A person can find today an article that mentions AIDS in 1986.
        See, I'm wrong.. but am I ?
If 99% of the people in 1986 called it the Gay Plague and never heard of this AIDS word even though it existed in some article. Who is right ?

          Anonymous

yeah, fair point I guess. on top of their memory constantly being overwritten by a flood of irrelevant shit, they also confuse making experiences themselves with hearing someone else tell them their experiences.
I know enough people who will recommend me vacation destinations they have never been to, just because they heard others praise them. for that case it's not so much of a problem because there is no reason to assume that their friends would have lied about their experiences in those spots, if all of them say it's the best thing then it's probably at least good.
but it definitely becomes a problem when people maliciously spread lies for political goals. like with the weather for example. I absolutely do remember it being 40°C at one point during my youth, because that was right before I entered a plane and then when I left it it was 10°C at the destination and I was amazed by the difference. yet people around me claim that we never had temperatures in that range ever before 20 years ago. which is obviously wrong, I absolutely know it for certain. but the weatherman told them and why would he lie?

            Anonymous

            >and why would he lie?
Checked and that is the most important part.
Think about how information is collated today.
First it is screened, fact checked as long as it follows a certain narrative and then kept.
So let's say the narrative is mostly "Woke" to pick an ideology for arguments sake.
In the future it's just fact that "X" was Racist because it been filtered through the "woke" filter.

How will the future perceive our time ? Information is so filtered today.

Orwell was definitely wrong about one thing. He thought rewriting history to be in line with your ideology would need some huge, scary organization that pours countless of manhours into constantly updating the records.
In reality, digitization means that a handful of trannies can just fight edit wars till the other side gives up and from there on it will naturally spread its way through everything else. No need to manually edit Sherlock Holmes stories to remove the very clear allusions to people generally not thinking well of the blacks back then when no one even reads them anyway and but just watches the woke adaption of them and then reads on Wikipedia that only a racist would think badly of a black person, and only for arbitrary reasons.
