It's not so much that they can't hack it as men, but rather no one liked them as men. They already have non-typically-male mannerisms and interests. Being disliked for those as a man but seeing women get away with the same behaviors gives them the idea that they can finally get approval by becoming women. We need to accept nerdy men even if they don't look like a model.
