I will say, I came to lit five years ago because every single other books and writing discussion forum was awful, either the same recycled “reactions” to entry level literature or they were dominated by genre readers who legitimately touted Gardens on the Moon as incomprehensible literature. So I come here and get filtered by deeper discussions and the touting of philosophical works and begin delving more seriously into literature.
This place is no longer the best and only place to seriously discuss literature. We barely even talk about books. You guys really hate admitting this, b it the reality of the situation is that twitterposting and the /misc/immigrants have turned all of the hobbyist boards into low quality soijack farms. Truelit is legitimately much better. It’s still Reddit, still heavily moderated, but it’s the one place that discusses real literature and doesn’t force you to wade through mountains of idpol sludge constantly.

I personally do not have a problem admitting this, and I think most anons who are more concerned with having a place to discuss literature than they are "not being reddit" won't either. We have more and more threads talking about "how to improve IQfy" or "why is IQfy so shitty lately" every day. Last New Year's Eve we had an entire thread of anons saying that they were done with this board and were never coming back (how many of them actually left? Who knows).

        >Truelit is legitimately much better. It’s still Reddit, still heavily moderated, but it’s the one place that discusses real literature and doesn’t force you to wade through mountains of idpol sludge constantly.
This is true. If you want actual genuine discussion, that's probably the best place to go right now. You can't have a shitposting board and a genuine literature discussion board at the same time. Plus, the weekly general discussion threads are kind of comfy, and the community is small enough that after awhile you get to know most of the regulars. One of the things I actually like is that the moderators use the board themselves, and seem to be pretty transparent about how they run things.

Just checked it for the first time in a year or so and it seems quite comfy I might stay for the read alongs if nothing else this time.
        > doesn’t force you to wade through mountains of idpol sludge constantly.
I do remember seeing some on there before but it was actually fairly nuanced (at least compared to normal Reddit politics).
Guess I shouldn’t be surprised that people who read a lot are somewhat more tolerant and familiar with different views than their own.

IQfy doesn't talk about books as much as before. That's true. But it has become the best and better read political forum in the open web, and when we do discuss books, it's still miles better than anything you will find in reddit. If you don't like it here, then go there. We won't miss you.

Try having a genuine discussion about Heidegger, Spengler or Schmitt in reddit and see what happens. Even if you get it going, every post will be so full of self censorship that what's the point?

they stiffle free discussion. If you want to discuss stuff that is right of the left like heidegger, nietzsche, or even deleuze's books, and other modern french books stuff you'll get banned. You can barely even talk about 1984 and definitely not about Brave New World.

This is not even remotely true. There have been several times when I've come across a discussion there and was surprised to find that they'd even let it stay up; if the post invites genuine literary discussion in good faith, the chances are the mods will let it slide. And if they don't, it's easy to get in contact with them and they are happy to respond and are open to having their minds changed. I've talked to them several times and they all seem like nice dudes and don't fit the 'reddit moderator' stereotype at all.

Unless you're ready to give me a genuine argument as to why you think Beloved doesn't belong on a Top 100 list, I don't want to fricking here it. Chances are you're just going to say 'woman + Black person' and leave it at that.

You have read 0 (zero) books by Tolstoj
            >“The absence of the rights of woman does not consist in the fact that she has not the right to vote, or the right to sit on the bench, but in the fact that in her affectional relations she is not the equal of man, she has not the right to abstain, to choose instead of being chosen. You say that that would be abnormal. Very well! But then do not let man enjoy these rights, while his companion is deprived of them, and finds herself obliged to make use of the coquetry by which she governs, so that the result is that man chooses ‘formally,’ whereas really it is woman who chooses. As soon as she is in possession of her means, she abuses them, and acquires a terrible supremacy.”

            >“But where do you see this exceptional power?”

            >“Where? Why, everywhere, in everything. Go see the stores in the large cities. There are millions there, millions. It is impossible to estimate the enormous quantity of labor that is expended there. In nine-tenths of these stores is there anything whatever for the use of men? All the luxury of life is demanded and sustained by woman. Count the factories; the greater part of them are engaged in making feminine ornaments. Millions of men, generations of slaves, die toiling like convicts simply to satisfy the whims of our companions.

            >“Women, like queens, keep nine-tenths of the human race as prisoners of war, or as prisoners at hard labor. And all this because they have been humiliated, because they have been deprived of rights equal to those which men enjoy. They take revenge for our sensuality; they catch us in their nets.

            >“Yes, the whole thing is there. Women have made of themselves such a weapon to act upon the senses that a young man, and even an old man, cannot remain tranquil in their presence. Watch a popular festival, or our receptions or ball-rooms. Woman well knows her influence there. You will see it in her triumphant smiles.

            >“As soon as a young man advances toward a woman, directly he falls under the influence of this opium, and loses his head. Long ago I felt ill at ease when I saw a woman too well adorned,—whether a woman of the people with her red neckerchief and her looped skirt, or a woman of our own society in her ball-room dress. But now it simply terrifies me. I see in it a danger to men, something contrary to the laws; and I feel a desire to call a policeman, to appeal for defence from some quarter, to demand that this dangerous object be removed.

/lit/'s list is somewhat better (though both lists have a non-trivial number of shitty meme entries). Both lists are guilty of this, but the Reddit list is way too obviously influenced by parroted opinions and availability and social desirability biases. I doubt very much that, collectively, they have gone out of their way to discover and read books that are in any way obscure. Note also certain absurd overrepresentations: Reddit list skews much more female than it should (and three instances of Woolf in the top 50? Get the frick outta here). DeWitt's book is massively pushed among the feminized academic crowd and isn't even very good (go watch Seven Samurai, listen to Schubert, Scarlatti, and Ravel, develop an interest in advanced math; there, I've saved you the effort of reading that mediocrity). I like Zadie Smith, but she's not Top-100-all-time good. Morrison and Baldwin and Ellison are similarly on their Top 100 because muh diversity and not because their work merits inclusion.

Finally, I want to see a longer list that doesn't care how many times each author appears on it. IQfy at least has the balls to include Dostoyevsky as much as he deserves.

It's almost the exact same list and showcases that IQfy is unironically just reddit for racists and performative conservatives.

What the frick is this thread. Are we getting raided by morons trying to gaslight us into thinking reddit is better or are there unironically so many redditors here?

If you took a look at this board in the past 6/7 years and didn't realize that the original demographic of the board was slowly being displaced by offsite tourists more interested in current politics than in literature you probably are a tourist yourself.

        Anonymous

I honestly don't think we have that much tourists. It's just that we have discussed the same books over and over to death and culture war-posting releases more dopamine by now.

          that list is objectively shit.
IQfy list is only somewhat shit because trolls meme Hitler to #1 and other random lulz into the list.
These morons actually think Middlemarch, Pride and prejudice and bronte deserve such a high rank.
          >also
          zero philosophy
and incredibly American list (yes this includes the hispanic american authors as american not because they are from the americas though; you understand

        >Murakami
        >The Handmaid Tale (seriously?)
        >Harry Potter
There are probably some other questionable picks I'm missing. Other than that, it's not a bad list, but you can tell a lot of those books were only picked because some reddit homosexuals thought it was important that they were represented. They do have a few great picks that are arguably missing in our list though, like Under The Volcano, Middlemarch, Sutree or Krasznahorkai. Overall our list is a lot better both in content and in order though, even if it isn't perfect either.

The problem with r/Truelit is that redditors from other book subreddits, all garbage, come there and frick things up. r/Literature and r/Books are worse than any other internet forum on literature. It's the exact same issue IQfy has with /misc/ tourism, but instead of seething incels they get YA readers. Don't know which is worse.
r/Bookscirclejerk is a better shitposting forum than IQfy though.

/r/badliterature was the best lit forum in the whole internet. Too bad it's dead now. It was like if /leftypol/ had a IQfy analogue. It had all the good shit post from IQfy, but none of the awful politics from /misc/. I don't even understand why there are so many right wingers here. It's a known fact that right wingers can't into literature.

This is not the experience I've had. Any discussion about YA or genre fiction outside of the weekly general discussion thread doesn't make it through (I tried; I make a sockpuppet account and tried to make several threads on 'the literary merit of YA' on there and none of them got approved. I think they knew I was shitposting because one of them asked me about the age of my account and then I was permanently banned from there)

Is Moby Dick actually good? Not being from USA you'd always hear about US kids reading it in school, but I can't imagine it being that good. I just assumed it getting ranked no. 1 in every lit list is some sort of joke I'm missing out on.

      Yes it's good
Melville is probably one of the only American writers that deserves to be placed alongside the other greats (Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Joyce, Proust, etc) in world literature

Not bad but Dune being above Lord of the Rings is a crime
