    Some of them can be really damn good cars, loads of them in Europe with just absurd numbers on the odometer. Most of those cars are probably FWD and manual though, so that's probably why we don't see that as much in the states. The AWD systems can give some trouble and the manual transmissions are more robust than the autos. If manual's not an option, I've heard the later 6 speed autos (06+ I think?) are a lot better than the 5 speed autos.

      I'm looking at a 2006 2.5t s60 with 100k miles. I just want something reliable and i expensive. Everything that's Honda and Toyota is overpriced and higher mileage. Frick 2000s GM. And 2000s Ford is just kind of depressing to be inside of

        The gen 1 and gen 2 AWDs from the 90s and the early 2000s are the real fragile ones, later isn't so bad.

        The autos aren't bad either, but they are still autos. They are harder to keep alive than manuals just by their nature. More pieces, more to go wrong. Hard to beat the simple ruggedness of a few gears and a lever. I don't think the autos are too problematic by auto standards though. They usually give a decent service life, but they're just not as capable to last to the crazy mileage the engines are capable of.

    2005 2.5T , 210 HP, 5 speed automatic, owner here and I love it.
    Ride comfort is the excellent, I get regular compliments on how cool and classy it is. Engine is adequate and relatively economical if you drive for comfort.

    I got mine 2 years ago, imported from Switzerland.
    The transmission is Aisin, reliable if it is maintained regularly (fluid change every 3 years or 50000 km). Their weak spot is the valve body, the solenoids get clogged over time, especially if the fluid is not changed regularly.

    I read a lot about Volvos before I got mine. They a relatively reliable, but it's a premium brand and some parts are Mercedes-tier expensive.

    If I had to buy one again, I would go for one with 2.4 l engine, because the cylinder walls are thicker and much lesser chance of cracks due to stress. Also much better fuel economy, especially on the non-turbo ones (140 HP).

      2005 S60R, 300 HP (Tuned to about 360~80), 6 speed manual, 203K miles runs fine but some sensors are starting to throw codes due to age and higher stress of tune
      Does fine year round (Colorado so regular high snow) on good all seasons.
      They are very sound mechanically, only issues are electrical (early 2000s euro) related w/ the fancy suspension
      Get lots of compliments for it being a fairly clean car.
      I have no doubt it will take me from coast to coast if I left tomorrow.

    Is a 2009 s80 a reliable daily? What is high mileage for one of these? Are any of the key components fragile? I don't need all the bells and whistles just need it to run and not be miserable

    04 xc90 2.5t awd 173,000 miles. Interior quality doesn’t hold up leather cracks headliner sags plastic breaks. Electrical issues like tailgate and sunroof not opening, and a constant warning to “service security system soon or else” other than that drives like a tank no rust paint has held up well too

    The fuse box replacement will cost around $1500 at the dealer. That and timing belt & cam shaft seals are the biggest thing that will break the thing. Interior quality is not as pretty after 15+ years. Paint can be a little crusty depending where it's been.

    For any P2 platform with inline 5 engine...

    1. Be prepared to totally replace PCV system - $1500, might as well get it done at the dealer so it's covered under lifetime parts/labor.
    2. 2005 and above P2 Volvos had obvious cost cutting, no more aluminum suspension arms and no more glass headlights
    3. 2004 only - all the kinks were worked out from 2000-2003, aluminum suspension and glass headlights!

    And here's some cheat sheet:

    Engine oil change - full synthetic and OEM filter only. No exceptions. Got leak somewhere? Too bad, replace the seals
    Auto trans fluid - every 3 oil changes. Go to a shop that does "Gibbons method". Toyota Type T-IV fluid is good enough
    Brake fluid and coolant flush - every 2 years
    Timing belt / water pump / Accessory belt - OEM ONLY, 60k miles. This is a interference engine.

        Still one of the safest shitboxes of the 00s you can still reliably daily with. You get Volvo exclusive SIPS and WHIPS that other makers wish they have.

          Still P2. 1st gen XC90 (2003-2014) was all P2, 2nd gen is SPA, 3rd is SPA2. But aside from the clusterfrick that was the T6 and the shitty GM transmission, XC90s are generally reliable. I love my 2014 with the Sovereign leather. Back then, Volvo leather upgrades gave big jumps in quality. The IPD sway upgrade is a must, though. Car handles like shit without it.

          Aside from the problem models, they just need frequent maintenance from a good shop. The P2Rs are also problem children. I'm impressed that anon with the S60R has gotten it to 200k. Usually their engines blow at around 100k, especially with a tune. Cylinder walls are thin and prone to scoring and cracking. A lot of people swap to the 2.4t and put a bigger turbo and intercooler in. I don't think it's really worth it with a S60R, but for a V70R, it is. My 2007 S60R was starting to have weird engine problems at around 100k so I sold it on. Dealing with those in addition to the buggy active suspension and insane turning radius wasn't worth it, even tho the car was otherwise really nice.

          P3 is okay except for the later ones where they started using that shitty twincharged I4 engine. Maybe that was only for the '17-'18 S60/V60 Polestars. Avoid the hell out of that engine outside of warranty. Supercharger is a major weak point, injectors are another, and I bet it'll start having other problems as it gets older.

            I can't tell what trim the p3 is. Seller says it's 5 cylinders so I guess it's the wrong engine. It has 130k miles so who knows if it's cared for I guess.

    What about P3 XC70? I'm only considering the later ones (>2012). I can get a 2.4L diesel I5 or 3.2 I6.

    3.2 seems abnormally thirsty given its size and displacement, at the same time i don't want to deal with the usual diesel headaches like dpf and shitted up valves

    I've had a lot of fuel system issues recently with my 98 v70, shit's annoying. Can't find some parts now might have to say goodbye soon as it's just getting more expensive to maintain
