For most of human history polygamy, where just a handful of successful, powerful men got married (and got married to like 10 women) was the norm.
Society and religion changed that to monogamy, which meant that the vast majority of people found love and whatnot.

I think numerically, I think still most men did get laid, but the percentage of died-virgins in the past is higher than it is now

Look at apes like orangutans. The alphas have harems while the betas can only reproduce through rape. That's how pre-historic humans worked.

this is a meme as well. most apes reproduce. alphas just have slightly more.
        >As in other studies (e.g. baboons: Alberts et al. 2006; chimpanzees: Boesch et al. 2006), alpha males sired more offspring (30.3%) than all other males, but most males sired at least one offspring. Note, however, that two of the unsuccessful males (FO and ZS) were young males, and the seven ungenotyped and unsuccessful males were present for only a few of the earliest conceptions and many were very young adults. Despite the higher success of alpha males, younger males (aged 15–19 years) were more successful per candidate male than were older, often higher-ranking males, and age remained a significant predictor of male success after accounting for rank.

most people have an extremely hard time wrapping their head backwards to explain invisible ovulation.
it's much easier for them to use animal metaphors for human reproduction (case in point

Look at apes like orangutans. The alphas have harems while the betas can only reproduce through rape. That's how pre-historic humans worked.

) even though they make no sense at all since literally all animals except humans (and a handful others) have clear exterior signs of ovulation.
Humans always had a unique reproductive behaviour even before "society" but it is hard to explicitly describe it with only indirect genetic evidence.
in any case using animals as a reference is stupid.

      >the percentage of died-virgins in the past is higher than it is now.

Maybe if you count the child mortality rate killing half of all male children before puberty. Otherwise no. The vast majority of marriages throughout human history were completely monogamous. Only the most powerful men in certain societies were ever allowed to have mutiple wives. Unless they died in war or from a plague or something before they could find a mate most men were married and at least trying to have kids by their early 20s. Most women were expected to get married and start having offspring not long after their first period. Very few men died virgins because they were incels.

cope. you do not represent the norm.

do you have any source for this other than that meme article (which I can respond to if you want)?

the average guy's experience, or anything close. virginity is still rare for men in their 20s, and almost non-existent for men past 30.

Men tend to rope if they're still virgins at 30

If you're still a virgin at 30 that means you're too moronic to hire an escort and too proud to settle for the fat b***h during last call at the bar. In which case you should have a nice day not for being a virgin, but for being that useless for decades.

This is completely wrong. This vision of our primitive sexuality was invented by Victorian era theorists who projected their own fantasies in their studies.
Humanity was mostly monogamous from the start, with a few case of bigamous household.

      Completely wrong.

Look at apes like orangutans. The alphas have harems while the betas can only reproduce through rape. That's how pre-historic humans worked.

We are the only apes who get married. The 'alphas' have preferential mating rights with the women of the tribe, but the 'betas' also do the sex and sire children.

well over 30% given infant and early childhood mortality rates. For those who make it to adulthood, less so due to ubiquity of prostitutes. The reason most male virgins do not visit prostitutes today is pornography and masturbation are a superior experience.

historically every man was guaranteed a wife. liberals are trying to rewrite history though so people dont get any ideas about returning to the past.

My theory is that the immense energy of fossil fuels undermined the main male bargaining chip (manpower) and allowed females to be just as productively useful as males, thus they were able to get their own incomes and then their own rights.

The brain has many different parts that we inherited from different stages of history, some millions of years old. Sexuality is an ancient part and thus plays by ancient rules, thus female sexuality unchained will just universally select for a small band of male brutes. In the short run you get buttmad incels, in the long run you get dysgenics (this Natural part of the brain selects for traits good in Nature but bad for collective society). However the fossil fuels will run out soon and nothing comparably powerful will ever replace them, and so males will reassert patriarchy and females will be sex slaves again, just like they were for all of civilizational history.

kek, there's the meme. i knew it was just a matter of time.
read this if you want the proper explanation: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325368259_Cultural_hitchhiking_and_competition_between_patrilineal_kin_groups_explain_the_post-Neolithic_Y-chromosome_bottleneck

Can you explain how this disproves what I posted?

          Anonymous

because the bottleneck wasn't actually caused by 1 man reproducing for every 17, it was caused by a reduction in genetic diversity as Y-DNA became concentrated into patrilineal tribes in the neolithic era and when they were killed off by competing tribes it would delete them from the genetic record, while mtDNA would be spread out more as women would more often move between tribes, or would be raped/taken as concubines.
a reason which strongly suggests the bottleneck wasn't caused by excessive polygamy is that it lifted with the emergence of civilization which also brought about increased inequality between men. if inequality in reproductive access was the cause then it would be exacerbated by this transition, but instead it's nullified likely as states tended to be effective in suppressing warfare between these tribes.

Died adult virgins, very few. Died childless or unmarried, many.
