It's not just a case of plugging in the cable and it just werking, like USB2 and USB3. And there's no clear indication whether a cable can support either of these things (like the blue connectors, or the extra pins on type b cables), it either does or not. We are back to the clusterfuck times of the early 00s when USB ports on PCs randomly support USB1.1 or 2 with no indication, and we have to figure out which one to plug our external hard drive to, so it isn't as slow as a floppy disk.

NTA but that's not an apples to apples (kek) comparison because it's not the same hardware...
Not only are there speed differences between the SSDs on the Base and Pro models, but there's speed differences between the different capacities of the SSDs on each Pro model. It's the reason why the 14 Pro 128gb variant wasn't able to record in ProRes despite having the same camera.
I can't believe I have to defend Apple here but no one ITT actually understands technology. BTW the SSDs in these phones top out at 40-50 MB/s max, even on the Pro models. 480 MB/s vs 10 GB/s wouldn't make a difference.

ever used a modern micro sd card? they get 100mbps+ now and the Iphone storage is probably way faster.
Over usb 2 with 35mbps (thats the maximum real speed I've seen) you will need 8 hours to transfer files to the 1tb Iphone. It's absolutely insane.
At least Iphone has usb c now for charging.
Anonymous
yeah i fucked up on that. the random access speeds are 40-50 mb/s max, not the sequential speeds (which are around 1.4 gb/s). still, i'll defend apple and say that the people who buy the base model likely don't need the higher speeds.
in fact i'm really struggling to find a specific use case where the higher speeds would be necessary. let's say you record a minute of 2160p@60fps video on your iphone. you could transfer that file to your computer over USB 2.0 in one second, with ~80mb leftover.
Anonymous
But you don't make only 1 minute of video, also 1 minute is 1gb+.
With my 5 year old 128gb android phone transfering multiple gigabytes of files is a huge pain in the ass, I can only imagine how crippled the port must feel when transfering to a 1tb iPhone.
Iphone users probably use this port 99% of the time for charging. You transfer music over streaming services now, transfer photos over iCloud and so on, and thats probably apples goal.
They cripple the port so that users don't use it for file transfer.
Anonymous
using the hevc codec (which is the default for shooting video on an iphone), a minute of 2160p@60fps video takes up ~400mb. over usb 2.0, transferring that video would take less than a second. and that scales accordingly... >10 minutes of footage: less than 10 seconds to transfer >1 hour of footage: less than a minute to transfer >10 hours of footage: less than 10 minutes to transfer
i'm still trying to figure out a scenario in which you'd need more speed than this...
>company makes a car, they offer two models >the cheap one has artificial speed limit >literally just don't be poor
you are a subhuman, raised as cattle by corporations
nagger they literally put artificial speed limiter on their usb port in order to fuck with their customer base

THIS

You nagger homosexual Apple cocksucker, the USB-C should be USB 3.0 speed by default, it only supports the 2.0 spec for faulty cables or for the cheapest ones who only supports those speeds.
USB-C came to light along side the release of the USB 3.1 standard back in 2014.
The 2.0 speeds on the iPhone's ports are 100 % artificial and intentional.
USB-3 sucks ass,
Apple uses Thunderbolt which has 40Gbit/s and is four times faster than USB 3.2 Gen2x1.
And if you want to use Thunderbolt too, you gotta pay Apple for it. You aren't poor, are you?
Thunderbolt is using your standardized USB-C connector, but need specialcables.

Also, Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 have the same maximum speed of 80 Gb/s, so there is no point in using Thunderbolt unless you get the new version 5. Highly unlikely since it was just announced.
Anonymous
>so there is no point in using Thunderbolt
Unless of course you want any of the features that are mandated in Thunderbolt and entirely optional in USB 4.

USB 4 has more mandates than Thunderbolt 3, which is the same speed as the following generation.
>company makes a car, they offer two models >the cheap one has artificial speed limit >literally just don't be poor
you are a subhuman, raised as cattle by corporations
You think Apple designed a whole different SoC with a USB 2.0 controller? No, the SoC they have supports USB 3.0 and they simply aren't giving full speeds on the cheaper phones.
Well they probably reused the SoC from the 14 Pro since they reused a bunch of other hardware from it as well (the cpu, gpu and ram to name a few). The 14 Pro only did USB 2.0 speeds.
How is using a cheaper USB 2 controller artificial?
inb4 they're just routing the two usb2-lines out of the soc to the port and none of the usb3-superspeed-lines and some tinkerer will mod a normal iphone 15 to get usb3-speeds by soldering cables or whatever
I'm fine with this. I only want USB-C so I can use the same charging cables for everything. Don't give half a shit about high-speed data transfer to/from a fucking phone.
>have LG V20 and Lumia 950 >from fucking 2016 and 2015 respectively >fkn BABBY usb-c era >plug V20 into my now useless desktop dock for the Lumia >displayport over USB-C >USB3 file transfer speeds >headphone jack with a capable DAC built in
I will keep the V20 until it falls apart or the flash memory in it hits its write limit.

>tell me that every household has an ac access point
Why would I care what "every household" has? I have Wifi 6 and can do ~800mbps WLAN transfers with my phone easily, so that's what I'm going to use.
>Why shoud I care what Apple does?
If you don't use Apple products, you shouldn't. >Why are we here, then?
This is a thread for discussing a recent development with Apple products. If you don't use them and don't care about them, then simply don't enter the thread and don't post? Nobody's forcing you to be here and talk about things you don't care about.
Everyone said Apple gimping USB-C wasn't allowed per EU ruling. But the spite runs deep, they did the best they could. I think they really would have made proprietary cables and such had that not been stipulated by the EU.
They are making proprietary Thunderbolt cables right now. And they use the USB-C connector. And they produce them for a decade already.
And everybody who wants to be compatible has to pay license fees.
Screenshot this post. Next year Apple will bring USB 4/Thunderbolt to the pro iphone and say like IT'S LE 4X FASTER TRANSFER SPEEDS FOR TRANSFERING PRORES VIDEO FASTER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They support USB-3 10GB/s on the pro model so what's the problem?
Why should you have to step up to a more expensive phone just for something as basic as normal USB-C speed?

At least Iphone has usb c now for charging.
yeah i fucked up on that. the random access speeds are 40-50 mb/s max, not the sequential speeds (which are around 1.4 gb/s). still, i'll defend apple and say that the people who buy the base model likely don't need the higher speeds.
in fact i'm really struggling to find a specific use case where the higher speeds would be necessary. let's say you record a minute of 2160p@60fps video on your iphone. you could transfer that file to your computer over USB 2.0 in one second, with ~80mb leftover.
They cripple the port so that users don't use it for file transfer.
using the hevc codec (which is the default for shooting video on an iphone), a minute of 2160p@60fps video takes up ~400mb. over usb 2.0, transferring that video would take less than a second. and that scales accordingly...
>10 minutes of footage: less than 10 seconds to transfer
>1 hour of footage: less than a minute to transfer
>10 hours of footage: less than 10 minutes to transfer
i'm still trying to figure out a scenario in which you'd need more speed than this...
Ok. I don’t care.
of course you cant defend this shit, an $800 phone has USB2
Xiaomi 13 pro has USB 2.0 where was your outrage?
It's because they reused the chip from last year that only supported lightning (USB 2.0 speeds). Dumbass.
They had to leave something for iphone 16 upgrader
>build a custom made chip in 2022 that data transfer speeds are capped at usb 2.0
Lol lmao even
defend USB2 in 2022, retard
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to have one controller for all iPhone models due to economies of scale ? It would also standardize the supply chain.
guess it's part of the A*-soc.
Doesn't matter when your product is already at 100%+ markup, enforcing the premium brand alone is probably more lucrative
>buy cheaper model
>it has cheaper specs
>REEEEEEE APPLE IS OPPRESSING ME
>cheaper specs
Not on iPhones though. The new pros are 3.2*
Limited to max of 10Gb/s*
ok, but you can connect four of those to a hub connected to a single Thunderbolt port on your Mac.
We do not allow cheap inferior shit here.
If you don't use a Thunderbolt certified cable, we will have to limit you to USB 2 speed, because we can't risk hardware damage from your cheap shit.
>you gotta pay Apple for it.
Not if you use USB 4, which is literally Thunderbolt 3 with some additional features.
Intel decided to give away Thunderbolt 3 to the USB Forum (not the newer Thunderbolt 4 though).
bro, we are at Thunderbolt 4.
We don't use your outdated inferior slow crap anymore.
If you use your shit ass USB 3 cable that is not Thunderbolt certified, you will get throttled.
Stop resisting and buy your Thunderbolt cable.
>bro, we are at Thunderbolt 4.
See pic rel.
Also, Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 have the same maximum speed of 80 Gb/s, so there is no point in using Thunderbolt unless you get the new version 5. Highly unlikely since it was just announced.
>so there is no point in using Thunderbolt
Unless of course you want any of the features that are mandated in Thunderbolt and entirely optional in USB 4.
USB 4 has more mandates than Thunderbolt 3, which is the same speed as the following generation.
>company makes a car, they offer two models
>the cheap one has artificial speed limit
>literally just don't be poor
you are a subhuman, raised as cattle by corporations
/thread
how does tim's asshole taste??
like apple
Sony did this on Xperias years ago. Apple is copying, as usual.
How is using a cheaper USB 2 controller artificial?
Nobody uses the cheaper USB 2.0 controller. I guarantee you the USB chipset is the same but Apple is just limiting the speed
The 14 Pro only did USB 2.0 speeds.
inb4 they're just routing the two usb2-lines out of the soc to the port and none of the usb3-superspeed-lines and some tinkerer will mod a normal iphone 15 to get usb3-speeds by soldering cables or whatever
I'm fine with this. I only want USB-C so I can use the same charging cables for everything. Don't give half a shit about high-speed data transfer to/from a fucking phone.
>USB C 2.0
No video out?
HAHAHA
they still managed to fuck it up
most phones with USB-C connector including flagships only support USB 2.0, stagnation is multi sided
Only for chink flagships, Samsung, Sony and Asus flagships supports USB 3.0
t. iQoo 11 user
>have LG V20 and Lumia 950
>from fucking 2016 and 2015 respectively
>fkn BABBY usb-c era
>plug V20 into my now useless desktop dock for the Lumia
>displayport over USB-C
>USB3 file transfer speeds
>headphone jack with a capable DAC built in
I will keep the V20 until it falls apart or the flash memory in it hits its write limit.
nta, like...a dozen?
>buy long ass regular USB-A - C cable capable of 5V3A, plug it into stone age charger
>find fat fucking stack of USB-IF certified (yes...) USB 3 C-C cables at walmart of all places on clearance for $1.50 (3 ft) and $3 (6 ft)
>grab 3-4 of each, DP over USB-C, 10 Gbps, 60W...
>have old ass anker USB-A - USB-C 5Gbps cable for file transfers from phone
>buy silly long C-C 100W cable for charging tablet
>USB file transfer
What is this, 2007?
Wi-fi file transfer is notoriously slow on g and n standards. Go ahead and tell me that every household has an ac access point.
>tell me that every household has an ac access point
Why would I care what "every household" has? I have Wifi 6 and can do ~800mbps WLAN transfers with my phone easily, so that's what I'm going to use.
Why shoud I care what Apple does?
Why are we here, then?
>Why shoud I care what Apple does?
If you don't use Apple products, you shouldn't.
>Why are we here, then?
This is a thread for discussing a recent development with Apple products. If you don't use them and don't care about them, then simply don't enter the thread and don't post? Nobody's forcing you to be here and talk about things you don't care about.
>apple removes headphone jack
"using wired headphones to listen to music"
What is this 2007
"who even listens to music on their phone in 2023?"
iToddlers will defend anything.
Apple doesn’t have a solution wired anyways — they want you to use iCloud, not the storage you own.
Who even connects his phone to a pc in 2023?
The Samsung s20, released February 2020:
This shit and the eight different speed classes is why USB sucks nowadays.
IDC, I Can finally ask apple fags for chargers when I forget mine @home
Did they put the real one on the Pro?
Why dont they make a fucking 9600 uart at this point?
Aren't higher speeds required to connect high res monitors to the phone?
>connect high res monitors to the phone
u wot
lol
looks just like apple users
I remember the brew-haha when Sony announced this as a major feature
>remove headphone jack so people have to buy dongles or overpriced wireless earbuds
>cuck transfer speeds so people have to use iCloud
Profit
The shitty igoyim (and cuckbook) NANDs don't even have enough bandwidth to saturate USB 3.2.
It's over for Apple. Nobody in their right mind is gonna upgrade this year
