The Dissolution of the Monasteries was the single largest destruction of English culture in history. Centuries of texts & architectural achievements lost forever.

It was also a consolidation of state power that set the stage for modern Britain.

Seriously. English architecture in the early 16th century was some of the best in the world, the result of centuries of development that culminated in the likes of King's College Chapel. After Henry its nothing but boring manor houses and shit until the end of the 17th century when they decided to copy Catholic architecture again with St Paul's. And medieval English painting was some of the best in Europe, just look at pic related from the 1260s. Looks like something by Giotto decades later, but almost nothing else like this survived the Reformation.

This gives us the work of people like Rembrandt, Breughel, Vermeer. It was a win for good artists.

The Popes routinely granted annulments and divorces for the flimsiest reasons.
Pope Clement should’ve just give the fat frick his divorce.
Pretty based to start your own church just to divorce your wife.

He could have been a normal king (don't like the wife? Get her poisoned, or "dead from giving birth") but no he had to be a pussy and make his own fake church

Also he was too fat to be likeable

No, that's Elizabeth. All Henry did was "uuuuuh maybe we need to have a strong navy" and then built a bigass warship that subsequently sank.

Dangerously based. Though he did mishandle the dissolution of the monasteries; if he'd held on the land and just rented it out, instead of flogging it off to fund his wars with France then English history could have been a lot different.

his life is almost biblical. he was like a modern king saul or herod. see the parallels between the story of herod beheading john the baptist and henry executing saint thomas more. you can also see God punishing him in an ironic twist of fate where he killed many wives in an effort to have a son. he then gets a son who dies before adulthood only for the throne to be taken by a woman

neither in my opinion, even if he was my enemy (as a Catholic) he was just like any other king in medieval who got excommunicated in the past, his successors are the ones who overblew the situation instead of reaching a compromise.
But destroying monasteries and hospitals? Yeah totally gay and cringe, poor hating schmuck.

What's to say that isn't obvious? He is the man that greatly accelerated the material ascent and spiritual descent of England, while making many of his subjects miserable in the process. I of course find him interesting, and the period he reigned in more than a little magical, but I cannot speak of it approvingly. At any rate, since his death, it can be said that England has been a king without a king for nearly five centuries now. Everyone after has been a *modern* king, and thus not much of a king at all.

    You don't understand.
The lands still would have been seized by the crown, but instead of selling them off and getting a big load of cash up front, they could have been kept by the crown and the rents collected so the king would have always had a very sizable personal income.

It wasnt seized by the crown, it was owned by the crown through act of Parliament.
