Hello friends.
I have a 1JZ-GTE
I am looking for a manual transmission that fits the 1JZ/2JZ block.
I was told that a W58 from a Mark 3 Supra fits. Is this correct? How about a W58 from a SC300? Do those have the same bellhousing?
I already have an IS300 Fidanza single mass flywheel and clutch kit installed.
This engine is making stock power, I am not looking for a built troony at this time. I do not want an R154, they are overpriced, need a rare bellhousing, and a different flywheel/clutch kit.
Ive been googling this and keep finding contradicting answers.

Black person just pull a troony from a solstice/sky and buy an aftermarket jz->r154 bellhousing. Its all the same shit.

That bell housing is $800 and an r154 is $3k+
      Insanely overpriced

      I can still get a w58 for $600.

man i wish i could've got my w58 for that. but it was the only one that had everything for a 7M. oh well.
was gonna mention the torque but you said you're already aware of the box being near its limit. that may mean it may fail soon however.

This or a BMW Getrag, both require adapters but are better than the W58

Yeah bruz you can bolt any W55-8 up to a JZ with the right bellhousing, the bellhousings easily swap over so you don't have to worry about that.
The trouble is the W5X is just about at the upper limit of its torque capabilities behind a JZ turbo so you won't have much headspace for power mods and depending on how you drive you might even have trouble with a stock motor.

I know its at its limit, thats fine. im making stock power.
I know the Solstice trans fits, but it needs a spacer kit thats $350
Slingshot trans also fit, but those are rare these days
all those options are expensive, well over $3k after parts. at that point I rather invest in a T-56.
does anyone know the different bellhousings there are, and what is different about then?

The different bellhousing are the ones for different motors - there's about 20 motors you can bolt up to a W5X.
You want the JZ-W55/8 bellhousing which is luckily very common and cheap because no one wants to run a W58 behind their JZ anymore. It's the 7M-GE, 3S-GE, 1G-GTE and 4A-GE bellhousings that are getting hard to find.

man i knew the M bellhousings were getting scarce but i didnt know the G housings were still in demand. A bellhousings not too surprising; those engines are still popular.
dellow conversions selling their A and G housings for 800 bucks...M housings are going for about half that.

The main obstacle that stopped me from swapping a 1G-FE into my car was the rarity of the bellhousing, I was lucky enough to buy a gearbox later on that came with one but I'm not doing a G engine anymore - I'll still keep the bell just incase though.
+ I've seen some other people searching for them without much luck.

But 2bh if someone wants to run a G engine nowadays they're better off just getting a whole IS200 J160 6 speed.

the ebay one has more vent holes
there is a guy selling a W58 from a Mark 3. it would have the 7M bell housing. i see a single listing for $400, i might be able to make my money back.

lel i completely missed this. no, mk3 supras that came with w58s were exclusively for the non turbo ones. the gte and 1jz engined mk3s had an r154
    an sc300 w58 should fit

also the jz bell housing for r154s is not rare at all. theyre just expensive. you can find it everywhere on ebay or driftmotion

The w58 is going to blow up quickly unless you baby it all the time, Toyota put a stronger trans on those motors for a reason.

AR5s are superior, cheap, and plentiful in junkyards. Why not just put in a little more work and do it right?

      *might* blow up anon
Everytime one of you armchair experts chimes in on a facebook post to tell someone their gearbox is destined for imminent failure there are TEN replies from people who actually run W58s who will tell you about all the hard launches they've done and how many years they've run the gearbox without trouble.

I absolutely nuked my w58 with a tired but boosted 7m. I'm not much for anecdotal evidence however, and I think the fact that the manufacture of these engines was willing to spend MORE money on each unit to put an objectively shittier feeling troony behind them is evidence that their extensive research demonstrated reliability issues with the w58. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the process of building and driving the car. Best of luck anon.

        >objectively shittier feeling troony behind them is evidence that their extensive research demonstrated reliability issues with the w58
ive never used the r154, its supposedly based on a truck gearbox, is it rougher/heavier shifting compared to the w58?
the w58 wasnt bad when it was behind an NA engine. a lot of models used the w box, particularly the w58. it just wasnt designed for the torque that a 2.5 and bigger turbo engines put out. seems like it could handle the 1ggte though

My w58 shifted like butter. I have an r154 now and its exceptionally bad, even with the absurd throw there is just a ton of resistance, particularly at high rpm/torque which just sucks the fun out of a turbocharged supra. I drove a soarer with one as well and it felt similar. Never driven one in a pickup but I imagine it would be alright, especially behind something like the 1hd.

The 1g produces a lot less torque than even the 7mge so no issues there.

The Hiluxes I've driven with W56 gearboxes had extremely long shifters so it wouldn't surprise me if the R15X gearboxes were engineered for a big long shifter - maybe that's why they feel shit when Toyota tries to put a shorter sportier shifter on them.

            >shifted like butter
heh, saw a video comparing the w58 and r154 which said the same thing. but damn my w58 might need a rebuild then lol. doesn't pop out of gears or anything but sometimes i have trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd, just feels like a quite a bit of resistance sometimes. reverse can be pretty difficult if not impossible even when leaving it in first or 2nd. sometimes i have to shift to 4th, then it slides right into reverse.

would be a good time to replace the clip holding the speedo drive gear. over 20 or so odd years that clip fatigues and allows the speedo drive gear to slip out of place, resulting in your speedo and odo not working. need to take off the back half of the gearbox to get to it, but otherwise its very easy to replace.
