Is Tolkien's translation of Beowulf good or significantly different from other translations? Should I go with him for my first and possibly only reading of Beowulf?
Tolkien is good, and before Heaney was the definitive English translation, but its less grounded in rigorous etymology and more reconstructive, with modern English literary devices and stylism much like many English translations of the Greek epics.
Its not bad, but Heaney is better.
Someone told me this translation is racist because it isn't AAVE inclusive like the latest translation which uses modern youth slang such as "bro" and "crib" (as in what's up MTV welcome to my crib) in the translation.

>Beowulf is an ancient tale of men battling monsters, but Headley has made it wholly modern, with language as piercing and relevant as Kendrick Lamar's Pulitzer Prize-winning album 'DAMN.' With scintillating inversions and her use of au courant idiom--the poem begins with the word 'Bro!' and Queen Wealhtheow is 'hashtag: blessed'
Journos must burn. Some frick from Harvard even gave this pile of garbage a thumbs up review. Jason Furman, you need your degree revoked.
This doesn't even make me angry, its just entirely impotent. Black folk are not going to read Beowulf because you patronize their language skills, and I don't really even believe the pasty white guy who 'wrote' this thinks they will. This is radio static produced by a culture that overvalues the appearance of production.
>pasty white guy who 'wrote' this
Pasty white woman, actually. If a black author from a working class background had written a Beowulf translation in their own cultural idiom then honestly it would probably be pretty interesting, but some white lady imitating AAVE to make Beowulf hip is honestly just incredibly cringe.

Its pretty telling that you consider ebonics to be a "cultural idiom" of "working class background" blacks, honestly.
Very cool image but i do think the post misses how the Heaney translation remains way closer to the weird sort of two-part (some even describe it as 'braided') structure than the other more technically faithful translations.
Why the frick is the Old English typeset like that? I assume this is the braided structure

go read it
Really?
I cannot recommend reading a book at this time
Why?
Heaney's Beowulf is a great translation. Yes. Read it.
No. Because if you have to ask, you shouldn't read it. In fact, you shouldn't read at all.

Why would an Irishman use AAVE?
As silly as the basic idea is, the execution seems to be pretty good.

You sound so bitter and resentful.
So I'm assuming you also approve of pic related.
You're scum.
No, I don't approve of either. However, I don't wallow in resentment about it.
Being mad at this is like being mad at someone's bumper sticker or a novelty t shirt. It's inconsequential to me whether novelty gifts exist
it is always wrong to not be angry

.
Heaney is the definitive verse translation and I believe there is a video on youtube of him reading the whole thing.

Anyone else find this cover creepy? Where's his face?!
It's showing him from behind?
