They're old now. They no longer have any creativity. They're not gonna revolutionize anything, much less videogames.
I don't think being old affects creativity like that, a lot of the great fantasy authors (e.g. Tolkien) were old when they wrote some of their best

literally every high fantasy game/novel is derivative of Tolkien. The concept of elves as we see them now (tall, pointy ears) for example is pretty much his doing. Same with orcs, dwarves living in mines, etc. His books might come across as generic to you but that's because he literally created the standard.

fyi, the rage and wolfenstein games could run at 60fps on the 360. that is a 2005 hardware console. amazing feat for the time, when all other games were struggling to be 30fps.
That's exactly why the game industry needs him now more than ever. Things have gotten a million times more unoptimized since then. They need someone to come in and unfuck everything and no one else is stepping up to the plate.
