    >HDR monitor
I can almost promise you it's not worth enabling HDR on it.

        >buying OLED for work.
        >linux
        Oh, never mind.

You didn't fuck yourself over, you got fucked over by wayland still being vaporware that will never get the required features because the entire thing is doomed to fail forever. X will get no updates because wayland exists, wayland will get no meaningful updates because it is shit

did the Wayland mafia threaten all X developers into stopping development?

        >when will HDR work on linux?
        Any year now!

        >did the Wayland mafia threaten all X developers into stopping development?
The x developers become wayland developers

I saw an HDR youtube video for the first time on my phone today. I get the appeal and now my TN panel looks like shit.

Unless your phone entered HDR mode specifically, often it's indicated by the HDR logo somewhere in a corner, you still saw it in SDR mode just tone-mapped.

Not that anon but I'm not sure what you mean. On an iPhone, the only slight hint that HDR is technically a separate mode is a gradual increase in max brightness over a few seconds. Otherwise it's seamless- the video just plays as normal but with a much higher peak brightness.
Maybe it's different on Android but I've never seen the "tone-mapped SDR" thing you describe.

Phones have to use emulated sRGB mode anon, to be compatible with 99% of things out there, including media.
They just hide the transition information from you on your device.

      How will troonlandkeks ever recover?

It does use wayland, but doesn't support hdr

Nothing in Linux officially support HDR fully, but Valve does offer experimental HDR support through Gamescope, look it up

      >it's not using wayland
      Wayland BTFO

      How will troonlandkeks ever recover?

The support ur looking for is in gamescope, which is a solution for wayland until wine fully support native wayland. So literally it doesnt matter if you use X or wayland in the first place, xwayland in this case work perfectly.

first of all HDR looks shit on most PC monitors
    >low color gamut, 99% sRBG is not good
    >low contrast
    >low peak brightness (for OLED at least 600 nits (1000 is better), for good LCDs at least 1000 nits (only in case of good local dimming))
You will need an OLED display or at least a miniLED VA QLED to get a respectable result
second, windows implementation of HDR is bad (win11 is better than win10 though)
So far, only movies have a good implementation, some TV shows are decent and only very few games are good (unironically mostly from Sony and From).
While I mentioned Sony as a good example, GoW reboot was implemented terrible and also Starfield sucks.
In short, for HDR you are better off with a decent TV than a PC monitor. Usually good HDR PC monitors cost as much as a decent TV, but are way smaller and have crappy build-in speakers.
Only advantage of dedicated PC monitors is DP 1.4, but you'll only need that if you want to go higher than 4K HDR with more than 120 fps.

I have one of those good monitors you're talking about
and yes I know windows has bad HDR, one of the many reasons I want to get off it, but at least it has some hdr support
once linux adds their macos-like HDR like planned that will be perfect, but im wondering how many months/years until its usable

Wait, Linux does not even support HDR?
Probably sometime in the mid 2030s then.
Yet another reason not to use PaperweightOS ever
