Misspelled Cocteau because of autocorrect, misspelled Siouxie because idgaf about that boomer/zoomer crap.

Go and ask your mother or your friends’ mothers. My mom and her friends listened to Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Rush, Camel, Zebra, Boston, all the prog bands. I literally just talked to a woman who was telling me about when she went to see Rush live. I am speaking to you as a female prog fan too. It’s not unique, we’re not special snowflakes.

            Anonymous

My mom likes Genesis, but exclusively the pop era. I tried to show her Supper's Ready and she absolutely would not agree to sit and listen to a 23-minute song. It's depressing.

I'm not trying to be unique or a special snowflake or anything, I literally just have not met another female prog fan IRL and wish I could. I'm probably gonna go to Robert Fripp's silly "speaking tour" because he's coming right to my town; maybe I'll get to meet someone there, but I'm not overly hopeful.

              Anonymous

Maybe not your mom in particular, but lots of gen x women listen to the music mu treats as super underground sacred cows when in reality they were hugely popular. Idk about you but I don’t know hardly any young people regardless of gender who like fucking prog because it’s dead, old, and nerdy.

                Anonymous

Next time I see any of my mom's friends I'll try and ask them about it, I guess.

And ok, yeah, that's fair, the sample size isn't large in the first place. I am in a sort of prog band with two guys my age who love the genre as much as I do, but I've been banned from the aux cord in some of my other friend groups. Maybe the genre will experience a real revival someday? Copium???

It's not that deep, I promise. I just like music with cool and unique structures and chord progressions, which is typically prog (or, y'know, jazz, but I'm still a bit of a pleb when it comes to jazz), which there are not a lot of women either making or listening to. There are some, but not enough. I would be thrilled if more women started getting into it in the future, though.

Yeah, I’m not understanding this shit about women having taste I n music. I’m not trying to be all MGTOW but fucking women listen to top 10 pop acts into their 30’s or listen shitty crap like the lumineers or Mumford & sons.

I know this may be hard to believe, but women are individuals with different tastes, not a monolith. A huge portion of guys also exclusively listen to top 10 rap artists or butt rock. Your problem is with normies, not women.

          Anonymous

Maybe cause I’m nearing 30 and women my age never grew out of their teenage phase. Still listening to shit that comes on Apple Music’s pop charts. I’m talking about most women I know they’re a smal majority of women that listen to music outside the realm of pop, rap, and commercial indie. Music is my hobby for the most part listening to an album is like playing fucking Games for me. I never met a woman with the passion I have for music. Shit, for years I tried to get my nieces to listen and want to create music and the oldest just went to the way of most females. Pop music like Olivia Rodrigo

Yea this is correct, i've romanticised that idea for a long time until i actually met a girl with good taste and after a few weeks i was fucking done with it.

My wife has insane taste and knowledge about film, music, and lit but for whatever reason she keeps that shit really private and only gushes to me when she is overwhelmed by something or thinks I'd enjoy something too. At this point I don't even look for shit myself outside of music anymore. But we have pretty different tastes there, most of her shit is usually too artsy/female for me, and then next day she'll be playing a game and listening to some bubblegum shit like abba which I also don't like but it is what it is. I just love that she's got such high standards and vets everything herself instead of using shit like rym, thinks fantano is a total amateur and can explain really easily why etc

This is the right way to do it, fuck sharing all of your interests with your partner. A healthy relationship is one where you can keep things apart and individually pursue your own interests. That's not to say you should never talk about them but a bit of distance is respectful and healthy.

Maybe the Smiths aren't most complex band in terms of sonicality, but this sound harmonizes perfectly with Morissey, who plays first fiddle in this band. Without him, the Smiths wouldn't stand out at all from something like U2, but because of his songwriting, this "mediocre" sound gets 100 times better.

Several. A few classmates, a few women at metal shows, a few exes, a few women who should have been exes. In defense of the incels ITT, I will say that I've found way more women into metal, classical and prog than jazz by a longshot, which has inevitably left me the one forcing people to listen to Miles or Trane. On the other hand, the same pretty much goes for geeky prog dudes who think Thank You Scientist or Opeth are jazzy but don't know who Elvin Jones is.

Definitely online. I don't doubt that it happens to some people, but I've never had any dude come up to me and pull the "name three songs" shit when I'm wearing a band shirt (and I wear band shirts pretty often). Actually, people hardly ever say anything at all to me about those shirts, and I wish they would, because I want to talk to people about music! Online though, I've gotten a ton of bullshit from incel keyboard warriors, as one would expect.

If I had to guess, it could be because rock and metal are "harder" genres that some dudes use to express their masculinity, so they feel like women are invading their "manly" community or something. It's stupid, of course, but that could be an explanation.

It's especially silly when they try to gatekeep prog/art/space rock like this though, because those have certainly not been bastions of masculinity throughout their history...

Part of it is probably because women have pretty much always performed in jazz, even if almost exclusively as singers, so they were always allowed a place there. There are comparatively very few female rock singers. I guess rock fans don't see enough chicks representing the artistry so they see chicks in the fanbase and audience as some weird discrepancy. Autists are also gonna autism, dudes do this with shit like exercise, chess, geek culture, vidya, etc.

I don't have social media and since I pretend to be a man when I'm posting here anonymously that's never been a issue
Irl all I get is a "nice shirt" and a brief conversation about the band, the few times it happens

I've met a few girls who mentioned some good bands. They all seemed to have a passive interest in music though and would probably listen to anything if it was on the radio.

two exes, one that listened to weird noisecore shit, obscure weeb shit and actively avoided music that more than 3 people knew about
the other one that would literally just listen to nonagon infinity or polygondawanaland over and over again

not sure i would call either "good" but certainly more interesting than any since

Yes, all the girls I've dated have had better taste than me, and have been less contrived in their tastes. The reason they date me is because they have good taste.

I met this girl at a party and we were showing each other our playlists, I was shocked when hers was filled with semi-obscure 60’s and 70’s stuff. She was really into it too, knew the bands and all. I was most surprised/turned on when she scrolled past some Nico tracks; never thought I would ever meet a modern woman who listens to Nico lol.
