It is easy to be overwhelmed especially when you are expected to keep up with mathematicians who have been doing math and only math from a young age.

Actually thats is almost the average iq if math phds. Needless to say 99.99% of them are nobodies living in the shadows of their mire talented peers.

Srsly - nobody wants to be a nobody. People want to be stars in their fields, they just do say it or admit it. And thats for geniuses only.

For most if us, we better carry on with our lives, make money and just study physics as a hobby, to satisfy our curiosity

What's there to explain? Being a billionaire is infinitely better than being some grant junkie. Bill Gate's Harvard professors said he could have been a world class mathematician, he's obviously much better off now

This board thinks that IQ leads you to success, when in reality it's just one of the things that lead to success and not it alone. Nobody gives a shit about your IQ if you can't do anything with it.

But it is certainly a requirement. Most iq test questions are stupid and its laughable that someone who cant answer them wants to be a mathematician/physicist

              >mercantilists
You mean merchants. Mercantilist are people who subscribe to mercantilism, an outdated economic theory from the early modern period (the 15th to the 18th centuries but most popular during the 1600s-1700s) that posited that a nation becomes more prosperous as it accumulates recourses and maximizes exports whilst minimizing imports.
Picrel (Jean-Baptiste Colbert) is an example of a famous mercantilist.

"It’s a widely held belief that a high IQ score correlates with greater success in life. One reason might be that, overall, the average IQ of employees does actually increase with the complexity of their tasks. And, since complex tasks are generally better rewarded, it seemingly accounts for this success.

However, upon closer inspection, IQ scores don’t account for great performance and success as well as we might think.

Consider, for example, one study conducted on the relationship between sales performance and IQ. They discovered that, when you ask bosses to rate their salespeople, they tend to believe that their more intelligent employees do a better job. However, when the researchers measured intelligence against actual sales results, they found that there was no correlation, thus making intelligence useless as a predictor of sales performance.

And the results of this study aren’t limited to sales performance."

This meta-analysis evaluated predictors of both objective and subjective sales performance. Biodata measures and sales ability inventories were good predictors of the ratings criterion, with corrected rs of .52 and .45, respectively. Potency (a subdimension of the Big 5 personality dimension Extraversion) predicted supervisor ratings of performance (r=.28) and objective measures of sales (r=.26). Achievement (a component of the Conscientiousness dimension) predicted ratings (r=.25) and objective sales (r=.41). General cognitive ability showed a correlation of .40 with ratings but only .04 with objective sales. Similarly, age predicted ratings (r=.26) but not objective sales (r=-.06). On the basis of a small number of studies, interest appears to be a promising predictor of sales success. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

Anyone can "study Physics" in the sense of reading the textbooks and doing enough tutorial problems to pass exams and get a degree. When smart people say they "aren't smart enough for Physics", what they mean is they aren't smart enough to make a good career out of. I.e. getting into a top 10 gradschool and then being genius level enough to make valuable contributions in the field. So these smart people wisely choose career paths better suited to them where they will perform better and garner far more wealth and prestige than they could even as a top tier Physicist.

In constrast, dumb, lower class people still think the degree in itself is prestigious and lucrative.
